Wondering what one does to upload attachments around here? The forum doesn't allow jpeg files (although frustratingly, jpgs are ok).

Build Reports / DIY sampler/mellotron

One for the keyboardists!

Props to Doug Tuttle for passing on the info about the WavTrigger from Robertsonics. I bought the board last Christmas whilst travelling around the US, and the box was cobbled together from some old Ikea shelves. Oh, and the little midi board was built on perf. Connect a midi keyboard to the port and you're all set to go. No more 'checking my mail' onstage. :-)

Build Reports / Mini (SS/BS overdrive)
October 20, 2017, 09:00:29 AM
As I already own a Smallsound Bigsound F---, I thought I'd build the Mini out of curiosity. Turns out it's a great effect in it's own right and different enough to warrant having both on my board.

Couldn't resist ripping off the Mini artwork, which I slightly regret doing now. This build is for me though so I guess it's not such a terrible thing to do.

Hey,

I'm trying to draw a schematic using Eagle 7 on my mac, but it's frustrating using the track pad (every time I try to select Properties using the right mouse click gesture, I zoom in).

Is there an easier program? I don't need to make a PCB layout, just draw the scheme.

Cheers,

Addy

General Questions / De Profundis mix pot

Apologies upfront for this uber-noob question, but how should I wire a DPDT momentary footswitch to act like a regular SPST momentary? I guess I can forget about the second pole, but do I connect together one outer and middle lug or all three lugs together on the first pole?

The only reason I'm using the DPDT is they're smaller than the regular momentary switches, and I'm trying to fit two of them into a 1590A. It's pretty tight with the jacks.

Build Reports / Wattson EFY-6 with starve
February 22, 2017, 04:33:53 AM
Built this using the vero layout at tagboardeffects. There was a bit of whine coming through the 1spot that a Huminator circuit on a tiny daughter board fixed.

I lacked the NTE109 diodes in the Wattson circuit, so I banged some 1N34As in there and it sounds pretty good. Has anyone compared their clipping characteristics? I'm having trouble finding them online, apart from eBay (and it's not cheap to get them sent to Norway).

For the starve I put a 5k linear pot in there. Helps clean up the sound and offers different texture plus an added bonus is when the circuit is really starved and the signal drops below a certain threshold, the sound begins to modulate like a tremolo. Lots of fun!

I got a nice surprise when voltage starving the circuit:

https://youtu.be/OvmXb8X2sN4

So my question is what's causing it to tremolo? As you can hear in the video, it kicks in when the level drops below a certain point. It's quite a fun extra to an already great superfuzz! The rate is also somewhat adjustable via the voltage starve pot (5kB).

I didn't have the NTE109 diodes the circuit uses so instead I put a couple of 1N34A in.

I'm stumped by a bizarre problem with an LED...

I've built David Rolo's Twin Peaks tremolo. It sounds great but the LED for the bypass foot switch does not come on. Everything seems to be working ok with the pedal itself... Sounds great and looking inside, the home-rolled vactrols and tap tempo LED flash in time. The bypass LED however does not light up. I swapped the CLR down from 6k8 to 3k9 and measured the voltage: I'm getting 9v on the wire before the LED and 7.5v on lug 1 on the 3PDT (so the LED seems to be doing it's thing) but the LED just doesn't light up. I've tried three different LEDs, reflowed the solder at all relevant points, and the voltages would surely read 0v on the 3PDT if I had the LED connected the wrong way around, or if there's a bad solder joint somewhere.

Urgh. Any ideas guys? Never had a problem like this before...

I'd like to add the 'Really Nice Guy' mods to the Mid Fi Random Number Generator that I made on vero. I've got the schematic for the mods, but I don't think I've used an on off on switch before. So do I connect the 47k resistor to the middle lug of the SPDT and the 2M2 to one outer lug, and the cap to the other?

After a look at the Multiplex build doc, I think this is right  :)

Build Reports / Demo Tape Fuzz

I put it together this summer using the Milk Fuzz board at OSHPark. With the gain up full it makes a fantastic squeal. Pure Psychocandy 8)

Build Reports / DIY Reverberation Machine (DBA)

Thanks to m-Kresol for making the boards available at OSHPark. Felix's layout makes use of the newer BTDR-3 bricks that have adjustable decay. I've built this pedal twice now, the first time using the older brick which has a bit more modulation going on. I did tinker around with the resistors in the dry path of the circuit to get more dirt from the gain control.

Here's a quick phone recording from earlier today:

Build Reports / Quantum Effects Barium Boost (SHO)

First time working with a 1590A but it went surprisingly well. Thanks to Felix for making the boards available at OSHPark (and for some email support)  :)

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / EHX Holier Grail mod
October 03, 2016, 03:51:32 AM
I fixed a dodgy switch on this for a friend who picked it up for a good price (well, good for Norway at least!). The effect is quieter than the bypass level so I've been given the thumbs up to add a boost or some dirt, and there's plenty of space inside.

So, any suggestions? The Holier Grail takes 18v so I guess I need to add a voltage regulator to bring it down to 9v.

Evening all,
I've just finished putting together the Giant Hogweed that drolo so kindly gifted me in his Christmas PIF, and to my dismay it passes no sound... Not even the LED comes on. After a couple of successful projects, this one was a bit of an ordeal getting everything into the enclosure, and I'm not exactly proud of the guts... But I will post them if I get really stuck! Straight away I've noticed that I connected all the lines that need power to the lug on the DC jack normally used for the battery...
So my question is, does it matter which + lug you connect to?
Thanks in advance,

Addy

Build Reports / Sharkfin
March 10, 2016, 05:14:13 AM
Here's my finished Sharkfin, built for a friend's upcoming birthday (I posted pics before the forum went down but the decal is on now plus I put a lower resistor in for R4 which brought the effect level up to unity - thanks for the tip, midwayfair).

Been a very fun and worthwhile experience making this, and looking forward to more building  :D
