So, I'm going to assume it's ok to use a 100n Cap at C22 due to no response on that question. Can I also assume that I can omit the 4k7 at R30 if I'm using a breakout on the 3PDT?

Thank you

Hi,

I'm planning on purchasing Deathklaw, but I wanted to confirm something in the build doc. In the notes section, mod ideas, it states "try substituting a higher value for C22 (100n)." C22 is 22n so is the 100n a suggestion of the higher value? Just wanted to make sure. This looks like a pretty intense build!
Also. I guess I need to prep the enclosure fairly early on since I need to install the green LED prior to IC2, and the LED will be sticking through the enclosure I assume.
One more thing, I just ordered the LM78L05, (they have it L78L05), the BC550s, and the PT2399s from Tayda. I know Paul @ diyguitarpedal.com has the LM78L05, (just labeled 78L05), and the PTs as well. Just want to make sure I'm getting operational components.

Thank you

General Questions / Re: Switching Diodes
September 14, 2016, 05:42:09 PM
I'm about to begin an etched version of Sabertooth. It calls for a 1N4001, but I was thinking about using a BAT46 or a 1N914 instead. Does the 1N4001 protect against reverse polarity in the circuit, or does it just serve as a clipping diode?

Thank you

Hi,

As Jon said in a 2012 post on diodes, OA126s had dried up. I'm just wondering if the same is true for the 34A green-bands? I've tried a bunch of different places, and I'm only coming up with the Dbl Black / Single Black band type, and a weird silver with black band style. Anyone have any ideas, or am I too late to the builder's party to get my hands on any?

Thank you

Hi,

Is soldering diodes suppose to be such a pain? Barry over at GuitarPCB.com has a video regarding soldering to a circuit board which was very helpful. He suggested a 10 count when contacting the iron to the board/lead before applying solder. I have followed that process and found most of my joints are very good! However, when it comes to soldering diodes, especially 4001s, 5817s, etc., my joints look like hammered crap! They still work, but they're bumpy, mis-shapen globs... I'm using a heat-sink on ALL diodes. Do I need one on silicons or just glass / germanium?

Hi,

I'm doing a fairly big component buy in the next couple of days for builds I'll be working on in the near future, and I want to make sure I don't waste $ on stuff I don't need. This is taken from the Deadpool build doc. "I strongly recommend purchasing the 2N3565 transistors from SmallBear." SB's 2N3565 look like pic1. The etch is set up for this type, pic2. Which do I purchase?

Thanks,

I'm going to begin work on another discontinued build, the Ghost Note. It calls for a Zener, (1N4742), and while looking through the data sheet/info page on Mouser I noticed it pulls 12V. Just wondering if that's normal or if I need to search for a 9V 1N4742? Not trying to sound ignorant, just getting clairification.

Thanks

Hi,

Have a quick question with regard to 1N34As. I have three (3) different types (pic 1) vs the default style (pic 2) shown below. Are these ALL functioning 1N34As, aand why the different color types?

Thanks

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Re: SPST Frustration

Hi,

I've got a bug about building some discontinued circuits, (thought my Pepper Spray wouldn't work but sounds great!). Anyway, the build docs call for SPST ON/ON for Deadpool (Body & Comp), Doombutter (Fuzz Lift), and Uproar (Pres.). I've been banging my head trying to find ON/ON, when all I'm finding is ON/OFF. I found an example of wiring an SPDT ON/ON so it acts like an SPST ON/ON, (See Attachment Pic), in the Mysterioso Jr. doc. Would this be the best way to go as an alternative?

Thank you

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Re: Vactrol Type
August 30, 2016, 12:55:51 AM
Hi,

I know it's discontinued, but I was wondering if anyone knew the specific type of Vactrol used in the Doombutter? I have a choice of 5, VTL5C1, VTL5C2, VTL5C3, VTL5C3/2, and VTL5C6. I know everyone says "roll your own", but I have tried in the past and FAILED miserably! I'd rather spend the $ on a commercial one.

Hi,

Just built my first etched PCB today, and surprisingly it worked...quite well. Anyway, in the Pepper Spray etched version the Q2 (2n3565) is quite a leg stretch, and the transistor is kind of wobbly. I also want to shore up the 2n404a. Would using my heat sink on each transistor leg, and putting a drop of solder on the socket work, or would it be detrimental?

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Re: DC Power Jacks

Hi,

Does anyone need 22 (regular) DC power jacks. I'm using "Outties" these day...much easier to wire and install... for me. Anyway, if anyone wants them send me a P.M. with your info., and I'll send them out to you.

Hi,

I'm planning on beginning work on an etched PCB version of Pepper Spray. Obvious difference, no solder pads. Are there adjustments I need to be mindful of when soldering on an etched board vs fabbed?

Thank you

Hi again,

It states in the build doc. "Alternatively, you can use either an SPDT or DPDT wired in either spot to allow you to switch between different diode types on-the-fly." This is with respect to the D1-D4 clipping diodes. Just wondered if the attached Pic. is properly wired?

Thanks again,

Hi,

I know Rabbit Hole is out, but I have two unused Mudbunny PCB's that I might as well use. Anyway, I use a breakout to wire the 3PDT, and I'm including two pics to make sure I'll be wiring things properly, (there are two inputs). Pic 1 is using Ben's breakout, (circles: do I need to include R25 since it looks like it's the LED CLR?). Pic 2 is using Barry's from Guitar PCB.com.

Thank you

Hi,

I'm working with breakouts on my 3PDTs, and I want to make sure I'm NOT burning them out when I solder. So, (PhotoRed1), do I solder the entire lug, (sides, hole, inside, etc.), OR (PhotoGreen1) solder the center of the lug and two connection blobs on either side, OR (PhotoYellow1) just put two blobs on either side of the lug? Using Rully, or GTR Pedal.com breakouts. Soldering PCB pins seems to be easier, (Ben's Detour PCB).

Thank you,

Hi,

Paul @ DIYGuitarPedals.com posted a video regarding building a test box for DIY pedals. He used regular "star wiring" on the 3PDT, and used low voltage leads, (with alligator clips on the end), for In / Out / Ground / 9V. I'm wondering if I can use a "breakout" on the 3PDT for easier connections? Planning on using either Ben's (RullyWow) basic, or Barry's basic (GTRPedals.com).

Thank you for the help!

Tech Help - Projects Page / First Pedal FLOOP!

Hi,

This is going to be a multi-part post due to number of attachments. I just got my first pedal together yesterday, plugged it in, and....NOTHING! Bypass was fine, but engaged rendered a "cycled" static sound, and NO LED. Ben, (from RullyWow), suggested the following. (...it sounds like you have a dead short somewhere. No LED and if the power cycles...it's probably your power supply detecting a short circuit between GND and +9V and cycling on/off. See if you have a short between the power and GND with a DMM.). I had already torn apart the pedal for the photos I'm uploading by the time I read this, so I couldn't test. Anyway, if anyone sees a screw-up in any of the pics please let me know. I'd like to start building boxes that work over fancy paper weights.. ;)

Complete1 pic shows the entire pedal. 3PDTsolder1 pic shows the job I did soldering the stomp to the breakout. I was a tight fit to begin with so maybe this was part of the problem? Inoutjacks1 pic, and injackmoment1 pic showed my screw-up with the momentary. It blocked the In jack from successfully making a connection! Lastly for this part...DC1 pic just shows the heat-sinks on the DC jack. Part II coming next...Thanks

General Questions / Re: Useless Parts
July 16, 2016, 08:01:00 PM
Hi,

I have about 35 of these 2N2907s that I can't use. I need the 2N3904 or 2N3906 type set-up of the 2N2907, (E,C,B right next to each other, and not the Germainium type set-up). Anyway, instead of me pitching them if someone could use them just send your address info to me via P.M. I'll send them out to you...don't want anything in return...just to get rid of them.

Thanks

Hi,

I'm gathering components for an etched version of this PCB, and I have a question on the C2 size. The build doc. gives me a link for a 47n (Cornell Dublier) capacitor. However, the parts listing calls for a 50n cap. ? Will the PCB work with a 47n cap?
Also, I have electros for C3/C6 from Paul's, (DIYGUITARPEDAL.COM), supply. Can I use these? It recommends using Carbon Film Resistors in certain places, but recommends using Metal Film for R2/R4. Again, these I have from Paul's stock.

Thank you, as always!
