Build Reports / serendipity first fabbed board build
September 22, 2010, 05:02:27 PM

I took advantage of the new pcbs with room for bigger caps and used some panasonic ecq-? in those slots. I also used the plated through hole construction to wire up my led from the top side and I really like the clean look.

The only substitution I made was in the opamp. Hermida uses AD712 which I couldn't find so I ended up using opa2134 which is very hi-fi op amp from brown-burr. The opamp is socketed so I can swap it in and out with jrc4558 or any other opamps I wish to try.

I have to say this is a great sounding od. One of my favorites and easily the best mods to a son of screamer/tubescreamer type circuit. The voice control increases the gain while increasing the treble and as you lower it it decreases the gain but increases bass. It is a very useful control to voice the circuit to different guitar/amp setups.

The artwork is a picture of ODIN over brushed aluminum. I went with a cliff125b enclosure for a little more space which is how I prefer 4 knob pedals. White knobs and a water clear blue led finished the project off.

hopefully tomorrow I can make a demo video. i

Build Reports / chunk chunk / dr. boogie
September 19, 2010, 11:16:19 PM

It took me about a week to figure out what was wrong with my build, I used 1n4001 for the diode instead of 1n4004 as soon as I switched it out it sounded great.

I was originally going to try to make it look exactly like a mesa boogie but I could only get 5 chrome domes from small bear, and they are out of stock at the moment. I then decided I would want to switch the knob layout a little bit because the mesa channel has presence top left and master in the middle and I figured it would make more sense in a pedal format to keep the master volume on the left and gain on the right.

paint is testors one coat lacquer lime ice
water slide decal with hp lovecraft
clearcoat is minwax spray polycrylic x 3

I am going to try to make a demo video tomorrow, it's too late right now to do one.

It sounds excellent the tone section is VERY powerful. it seems to ignore pickup selection and tone controls on your guitar takes over control of your tone. It really captures the high gain metal crunch sound with tight bass and fast tracking quick decay. it almost sounds gated.

I have no noise problems it is very quiet for me.

Mods / Serendipity: son of screamer mod
September 17, 2010, 09:45:50 AM
I am not sure if it's worth while to do these mods, because the serendipity sounds much better in my opinion but the circuits are nearly identical.

To mod the serendipity to the original jack orman son of screamer specs:
c1 47nF
c2 47pF
c3 100nF
c4 220nF
c5 1uF

r3 4k7
r4 1k

voice jumper
q1 jumper
q2 jumper

I think the reason nobody has cloned these is becuase you can find them for dirt cheap on ebay, but alot of metal dudes swear by them.

interesting clipping with 3 different clipping stages. I was trying to make a vero layout but I got lost.

General Questions / alpha pots on mouser?
September 15, 2010, 04:17:38 AM
I can't find the 16mm panel mount potentiometers with the smooth shaft on mouser.

I used to order from small bear but they take at least a week to get my orders in, I ordered some of the 9mm pcb mount pots from mouser last week and they came the next day (they shipped from dallas, I live in houston.. I only paid for fedex ground shipping) so I want to order my stuff from mouser if I can.

I ended up ordering pots from pedal parts plus becuase they usually ship the day I order and I get the parts 3 days later (they are in louisiana) and I order my switches and enclosures from them anyways.

any other helpful parts links would be appreciated too.

Build Reports / wolfshirt in a 1590b
September 13, 2010, 05:18:18 AM

It was a tight fit but possible. I used the shorter 10uf electrolytics on the top 4 to help it fit in. the switch underneath the top makes it a tight squeeze. I used the drilling template that was in the build document.

This is the funnest fuzz pedal. I always forget how much I like it.

paint is testors one coat "diamond dust" I really like the one coat lacquers they go on really fast and dry quickly and evenly. I used spray on polycrylic lacquer clear coat over the waterslide decals. ampeg knobs. I wasn't sure about what knobs to use, but these are growing on me.

Build Reports / 007 zombii fuzz factory
September 11, 2010, 01:19:31 PM
This was an extremely complicated build the actual circuit is fairly simple and easy to build but I had problems fitting the project into a 1590B enclosure. I used board mounted pots (for the first time) and you have to drill your holes EXACTLY in the right place or it won't line up. Fitting 5 knobs, input and output jacks, a switch, a dc socket, and 9v battery and a circuit board into one enclosure is very tricky. I also had problems with the battery shorting out the circuit by touching the bottom of the pcb. I covered the battery in electrical tape, and mounted it with double-sided foam tape to the enclosure to stop it from moving. I also covered the bottom of the pcb in electrical tape. For the germanium transistors I used vintage old stock american made units from advanced semi. I originally planned on using SINO japanese made units, but they where too tall to fit on the board. The transistors are socketed so they can always be switched out for other units. I used small black knobs (the only size that would fit, and a tiny 3mm red led. The paint is white and the graphics are james bond 007 with 7 bathing beauties.

I cannot seem to get my chunk chunk to behave properly. I biased the JFETS to 4.5v using the trimmers and tried adjusting the trim on q1. actually I tried every possible combination of bais on all the jfets and I can't get it to stop oscillating. I also noticed that if I touch the enclosure the oscillation is subject to body contact and the bias of the jfets go up with body contact on the potentiometers or the enclosure.

I made no parts subsititutions, everything is exactly to spec.
I checked for solderbridges and shorts and found none.

should be pretty straight forward, but I would appreciate a pcb some sweet madbean instructions for this high gainer.

Tech Help - Projects Page / zombii smoke
September 09, 2010, 10:24:59 AM
I built my zombii up and it tested great. I made two subs 5kc for stab and 5kc for volume.

I got my enclosure drilled which took two times. the first time there wasn't enough room for the battery. I think my drill walked up on the stomp switch. ALSO the drilling template on the project files has the led in the wrong place, it should be on the right between drive and stab.

Anyways I had my pedal all wired up and ready to test and it was sounding really weak then I saw smoke coming off the circuit! I shut it down and tried to figure out what was wrong.

I am still not sure what went wrong but I think something is wrong with my stability pot. I could get the circuit to work if I twisted the pot all the way to the left. The circuit also works if I short lug 1 and 2 or lug 2 and 3 out.

I am not sure why my circuit smoked but I am guessing the pots might be damaged. I just ordered new pots to try to replace them all. Is there anything else I need to check.

the soldering on the bottom right (the power section) looks worse than it is. I just did alot of rework there trying to fix the problem, there are no shorts.

Tech Help - Projects Page / mudbunny scoop/flat mod?
September 04, 2010, 02:22:32 PM
I wanted to see about putting the scoop/flat switch from the skreddy mayo on a mudbunny.

"The Mayo's "scoop/flat" mids switch just switches an extra .0047uf cap in parallel with the other one on the highpass side of the tone stack."

is the highpass side c10?

I was thinking about wiring up a dpdt switch to c10 middle to board, and putting .0047 on the top, and two .0047 on the bottom. is this correct?

Build Reports / WOLFSHIRT - foxx tone machine
August 10, 2010, 12:14:28 PM

wolfshirt: based on the foxx tone machine octave fuzz.

The bottom two wolves light up red when you turn the effect on, the top wolf lights up when you flip the switch on. This was a really fun ridiculous build with side mounted knobs and top mounted jacks.

The fuzz is really ripping and the octave sound is obscene. I can't even try to sound good with it on it is so harsh. a bunch of houston guitarists use the foxx tone machine a so I wanted to find out what I could do with one.

BLACK pcb and vintage 2n3565 transistors (little black dome with gold legs). also vintage germanium diodes 1n34a (green clear and red christmas looking diodes). I found both of these parts at EPO in houston, and wiped them out of their entire stock.

you can kind of see the paint here it is a navy sparkle called DeJa Blue from TESTORS one coat lacquer. also I used chrome bezels for the leds.

artwork and name are from the amazon.com item the mountain and three wolfs t-shirt read the reviews if you haven't yet it is really hilarious.http://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Three-Wolf-Short-Sleeve/product-reviews/B002HJ377A/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 pretty hilarious.

Build Reports / faultline - catalinbread sft w/video
August 05, 2010, 09:30:13 AM

I'm really proud of this build. I tried to get the best parts for it. xicon metal film resistors, xicon electrolytics, topmay box caps. I ordered everything from small bear, except I got the enclosure 125b, and 3pdt swtich from pedal parts plus.

I got my board in the mail yesterday at around noon, and I left for tour yesterday at 3:30 and did the whole build in 3 and a half hours. I even drilled the enclosure in that time too. It was a risk to try to rush through but i just followed the instructions. I double checked orientations on the fet's and the electrolytics and just went for it. I love madbeans boards because they are organized so well.

I used a 125b enclosure so I have a little bit more clearance and it makes it easier to work around in.

I took these pictures from the van and I'm going to gig the pedal tonight in urbana, il.
I tested it yesterday very briefly and it sounds incredible. Cranked gain sound is huge, but it also dials back and gets that pick attack growl and cleans up with the volume knob. I am so impressed with this and the grapevine sft becuase they are so quiet. They have got to the quietest drives I have found so far, very low noise.

I am going to have to do the artwork when I get home.

Build Reports / rangemaster
August 01, 2010, 11:03:37 PM

I got the cv7003 from small bear, I used their suggested values for the resistors. used metal comp resistors.

I found the capacitors at this local shop in houston called EPO electronics parts outlet. It is a really cool store aisle 1 transistors, aisle 2 resistors, aisle 3 capacitors, etc.

They have a huge selection of random stuff. The only downfall is all the really good parts are sold out like they have drawers for germanium transistors but they are empty, and I don't think they are ever going to restock them. I think I wiped out of their Ge diodes too.  ;D

The red caps are panasonic, and the radial electrolytics are NTE. sounds amazing!

I kept it simple with the build out. I didn't want to mess with a DC adapter or LED with positive ground.

For the finishing I just did a brushed aluminum finish using a drill and a black and decker FINE wire brush drill attachment.

I had this 1590a laying around and after building the slambox board up It looked like I could fit it in a 1590a.  I have never tried this before so it was alot of work measuring, and test fitting. I basically went one hole at a time and test fit as I went along. measuring over and over again.

slambox 1590a next to a hammond 1590B

I am not very happy with this build. The whole time I felt like I was in a kafka novel. Not to mention I'm blind in one eye so my depth perception is non existent. Things are dangerously close to shorting out. The 9v+ is maybe 2 mm away from the mosfet. Also the led leads with power and ground are dangerously close to the tip of the output jack.

I am going to get some hot glue and heat shrink and try to make this thing short proof. It was a funny idea at first but I am not really happy with the results. The assembly was such a pain in the butt that I don't even want to take it apart to paint it.

I think I will leave these 1590a's to malekko. Without pcb mounted jacks and switches it's just not worth it.

I just wanted to show a quick look at my grapevine before I paint it. I subbed a few parts values .033uF for .03uF. and it came out fine.

I was worried about the carbon comp resistors and stuff, but I just used what I had on hand and it sounds GREAT! not noisy at all.

I used a proskit enclosure becuase it's a little bigger than a 1590b and it gave me more breathing room to fit everything in.

I also got pretty crazy with my wire colors. I went with a rainbow theme across the top for the pots to keep everything organized. red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, white, grey, black.
