Open Discussion / I cannot believe...
August 10, 2011, 02:11:35 AM
I just dropped $450 to pre-order the Timeline. That's my commercial pedal buying budget for the next five years, ha ha. The last time I bought a new pedal was at least five years ago anyway. This thing looks and sounds pretty sick IMO even if it is horribly expensive. Delay is by far my favorite type of effect!

You may see lots of extra things for sale from me very soon.

Errata, Corrections, Revisions / Mudbunny Single Sided
August 03, 2011, 05:03:19 PM
The layout diagram for the single sided (etched) version depicts the transistors for a BC549C pinout, but the document did not mention this. I have made a note and re-uploaded it.

Thanks to Ben H. for the heads-up!

Build Reports / Prototyping rig #3
August 01, 2011, 03:34:25 PM
I keep filling up breadboards so I had to build number 3 rig. This one has an audio probe built out of a pen, which is so incredibly convenient. I breadboarded a new delay design with it over the weekend (using the Holtek 8955A).

Audio/Video Demos / Loophole & Tilt
July 29, 2011, 10:57:28 PM
These are not really up to the standard I would like to have in terms of my own demos, but at least it's something for now.

The Tilt in the demo is before I did the final tweaking ---the final version (the one that's in the project doc) is tuned a little darker than what you hear on this demo. That AC15 of mine us super bright!

Build Reports / DirtBag Delay
July 25, 2011, 09:23:36 PM
I should be able to put this thing together tomorrow and do some pics and a video. Here's the pron for now. I had one major mistake in my layout but I tracked it down and corrected fairly quickly.

Sounds dreamy!

Just a quick update on those awaiting orders: I've got the lion's share of the last ten days work almost complete and I expect to ship out about 80 orders on Monday. There will still be a few left to do and those should go out Tuesday late afternoon. I made around 120 pcbs this week which is definitely a record....and some of these new ones ain't small needer! Thanks to everyone for hanging in there and being patient with the turn-around.

There will be a couple more projects coming up soon. My hope is to get the reverb, wah and my take on the DBA "robot" thing done next. That one has got me pretty excited!

I also have a new batch of prototypes coming in the next couple of days for the phaser, the Dirtbag delay, and some others.

Requests / More Sunkings.
July 07, 2011, 04:29:32 PM
I'm still getting requests everyday for it even though it sold out three or so weeks ago. Should I make one more batch available or stick to the plan of discontinuing it with the other ones? I know there are people that did not get one because they sold out too quickly.

Global Annoucements / 07.05 - Kick out the jams
July 05, 2011, 05:30:22 PM
The Quadrovibe and Loophole sold out of their first batches. I will have more later this week after I get the current round out. The docs are also available on the project page.

I made a couple of last minute changes on the BOM of the Tilt. I will have those docs done not later than tomorrow...and sooner if I can do it. I'm really happy with it now----its got overdive all the way to super-saturated fuzz like tones!

I'll also get the video demos of the three new pedals up ASAP.

One thing I did not complete while the store was closed was getting some of the tutorials up. This is because I have decided to do a re-design of the webpages first. Work has already begun on this and I will keep at it when time allows. Here's a little preview below of the direction it's going.

I plan on having the store part separate from the projects so I can more easily add a few other items for sale (non-PCB stuff). I plan on embedding the forum into the site too so you can fully navigate from any point.

That's all!

Build Reports / Loophole - the lo-fi looper
June 26, 2011, 09:51:51 PM
Here's the populated "Loophole" board for the up-coming lo-fi looper. This thing turned out really well. I was able to eliminate some of the noise by selecting the right kind of tone control. There are some noisy settings, but it's very acceptable for a lo-fi application.

Gonna box this one up today or tomorrow. I'll post the completed pic when I can. This thing will fit in a 1590B or 1550B with two 3PDT switches. It'll be tight, but it will be a benefit to have the switches close together due to how it operates (you have to toggle both at once in some cases). 125B will make things a little more roomy...at least there are options depending on the kind of space you want to give it.

Global Annoucements / Store closing for a week soon
June 10, 2011, 10:53:50 PM
The store will close on 6.15 and re-open on 6.23. I'm taking a little "working vacation". I will actually be working pretty hard on finishing some of the two dozen projects I want to get done for release and also do some website tinkering.

My plan is to release the "Quadrovibe" a few days before the store closure for anyone who wants to get one. I'll get out all orders placed before 6.15 in the usual time frame. I'll also be on the forums quite a bit.

When the store re-opens there may be some additional sale items/reductions.
#696
As promised, the inventory reduction sale starts today. There are ton of boards on sale a decent reductions.

The sale is on:
Firebomb, Slambox, Boomstick, Sabertooth, Zombii, Pork Barrel, Macheen, Poindexter, Aristocrat, Darkside, Neutrino, Serendipity, Sunking and Yellow Shark.

New fabbed boards are available.

Double Flush - modded Bajaman Trembulator
Mangler - old project with a new design---classic fuzz face with PCB mounted pots and mojo parts layout
Rangemaster - similar to the previous layout but with PCB mounted pot
Bloviator - Bajaman Sonic Stump / Sonic Stomp

I'm also doing something new with the re-stocked Sunking boards. There will be a limit of three per order from now until they are gone. Since this may be the last time it is stocked, I want to make sure that everyone who wants one gets one. Also, to avoid someone floating in, buying a bunch and then seeing new builds up on eBay, haha! And, yeah, I'm going to be a hard-ass about it. Orders of more than three Sunkings will be cancelled or modified. Sorry to be mean...but I'm also trying to be fair.

The new fabbed boards will be here in a couple of days. I'm making ordering avilable now to coincide with the sale. Also, there will be some new documentation coming for those.

Cheers!

Open Discussion / Recommend me a video camera
May 30, 2011, 01:04:19 AM
So, I really want to pick up a nice HD video camera with a decent mic or mic input to start doing some demos. Anyone have any suggestions? I'd really like to do the audio straight into the camera so I don't have to worry about syncing up separate video and audio. I'm kinda lost...I have done no research :( On the plus side I have some good editing software, so that's no issue.

Also, a firewire port would be great. I don't have a video capture card, though.

madbeanpedals is going to evolve into its next iteration very soon. This means many new original projects of my own design, updated classics (including some that have not been available as DIY projects before), and some modified, improved versions of existing designs. I'm very excited about taking this direction, and I think it will help evolve the business of madbeanpedals. I hope it will also excite this little community we have to try out new things and also have more opportunity to give its input into where this beautiful monstrosity is headed.

This also means its time to start drawing down on some of the existing clone projects. Specifically, I intend to let the current stock of some of the manufactured boards expire. I also do not plan on doing straight up clones of currently manufactured "boutique" type effects any longer. While this is a somewhat nebulous label, I think most people here understand what I'm getting at. And, this doesn't mean I won't release something that I can make interesting modifications to, or offer an improved design, as is the case with the LaVache most recently. At the same time, I have little interest in straight up clones anymore.

It's important to convey that as madbeanpedals grows, so does its profile and so does the risk of pissing off the wrong people. And, I'm taking a bit of heat right now because of this. I've taken a lot of care in setting ground rules in terms of restricting the use of the materials to the realm of DIY. While the vast majority of people understand and abide by this, there are a few that have taken advantage of it in ways I would prefer them not to. This is not an admonishment of any specific customer or member here in any way. Rather, it's an indicator to me that the model I'm trying to develop this business around isn't perfect, and needs to be tweaked. Any negative reflection on madbeanpedals by the DIY community or beyond is my own failure and no one else.

So, rather than trying to continue to walk a very fine line which I've been on for some time, it just seems a lot easier to change course a bit. This does not mean that a bunch of projects will "disappear" overnight. It only means that I'm going to be much more selective about the things I offer for sale.

To give everyone an idea of what to expect, this is the list of PCBs that I will be letting go of once the current stock expires:

Firebomb, Slambox, Boomstick, Sabertooth, Zombii, Macheen, Poindexter, Aristocrat, Darkside, Serendipity, Sunking and the Yellow Shark.

Additionally, the Dig Dug, Quasar and Mysterioso projects have been canceled. Others may be added to this list, but I have not made any final decisions. I do intend to develop a sequencer project like the Dig Dug. It just won't be a clone.

I have a decent amount of stock left on the ones mentioned above, so there's no need to rush and buy anything. This is not a sales tactic. It's just a warning that once they are gone, they are gone for good.

Anyway, I welcome any feedback that members here have to offer. I do hope that people understand that I have good reasons for changing course, and that I don't make drastic changes without a lot of thought and planning. I hope I do not lose customers or members in the process, of course. But, I also hope that we continue to grow together and make this place fun and exciting for everyone!

Cheers,
Brian
