Open Discussion / I haz a pain
May 16, 2011, 09:16:51 AM
Took a fall and sprained the crap out of my ankle yesterday. Did it in the exact same spot that my wife sprained hers last October! My ankle is currently the size of a golf ball. :(

The good news is that means I can answer emails and work on some new stuff today....being somewhat immobile can be a blessing sometimes!

On that note, the LaVache and Cosmopolitan (formerly the Gearhead) will drop in another day or two. I made some nice improvements to the Les Lius design which I think people will like. I have a stack 4" thick of PCBs to build for new projects. I've been etching them and setting them aside over the last few weeks. I can't wait to build some of this stuff! There must be 20 or so...

I've also gotten in a decent supply of copper clad so I'm going to making large quantities of the hand-made boards as time allows. This should allow me to keep on top of things a bit better.

The output wires in the wiring diagram for the Chunk Chunk were reversed. This has been corrected and the revised documentation has been uploaded.

Thanks, sgmezei!

Open Discussion / New Double Flush Prototype
May 09, 2011, 11:55:39 AM
Works like a charm! PCB mounted pots, board mounted LED right in the center, and no ticking. This will be a very easy build. I'm going to change the Balance control to 100kC in the BOM. This value will provide a little more range for tweaking the tremolo over the straight guitar signal as well as provide more cut-off. 50kC would probably work just as well, but I don't have any of those.

Anyone into this one? The 9v version adapted to an MN3007 from the SAD1024, I mean. For the 1590BB and possibly a 125B. Thoughts?

Global Annoucements / 04.19 - Shipping Increase
April 19, 2011, 04:14:14 PM
So, USPS has put their new rates into effect as of a couple of days ago. Unfortunately this means small increases in shipping costs.I'm bummed because I had them set just right (actually, I lost a couple of cents on most shipping, but I don't sweat that crap).

So, here are the new shipping costs effective for orders placed after I hit "Post" on this thread...right here....this is it......here goes

U.S.A.- $2.25 for 5 PCBs, $3 for 6 or more.

Int'l - $2.75 for 2 PCBs, $3.25 for 5 PCBs, $3.75 for 6 or more.

Should I find that these rates are way off (up or down) I'll make an adjustment.

Now I will just hit "Post" and the magic numbers will change.

After much deliberation and consideration, I've decided to place some projects "in retirement"...at least for the time being. About six months ago, I passed the point where I could keep offering PCBs for every project (more or less) and still maintain a reasonable turnaround time. But, I kept pushing forward, releasing more projects and putting myself a little further into the hole. I have now arrived at the point where website and project development are suffering greatly because of the demands placed upon me in making so many hand-made boards. The number of days to get some orders out is going into double digits.

I can't tell you how many times I've been up at 4am trying to squeeze out a few more orders or soldering up prototypes that I cannot work on during the day. I've had several months of four hours-a-night sleep and/or putting in seven days a week. It's taking a toll and there needs to be some more balance. So, in order to keep the site growing and myself sane I'll just have to offer a little less for now.

This is not necessarily permanent, but will remain so for the foreseeable future. And, it's not every hand-made type project...more like 9 or 10 of them. My hope is that this will allow me some more breathing room to flesh out all the ideas I have for both project development and other needed content on the website...and a slightly healthier lifestyle. Of course, with the release of new projects the possibility of going "right back in the hole" remains, but I'm taking certain steps to create more balance in my responsibilities. Some future projects will be released directly as manufactured boards. The smaller, simpler ones will still be hand-made. And, I still hope to get the CNC machine online to take over some of the production, too.

I hope this is not too disappointing for anyone. At the same time, it might be a good starting point to teach the willing in the craft of PCB making! And, there will be some good learning material on that subject very soon :)

Global Annoucements / 4.15 - Some PCBs offline
April 15, 2011, 03:32:42 PM
Handmade boards are offline for a few days to allow me to get things under control. I'm running a constant 8-10 days behind on handmade orders which is totally unacceptable to me. So, I need a little breathing room to get things caught up, and hopefully get some of thee new projects finished up for everyone :)

Build Reports / Cupcake

Here's something I put together as part of a trade on a new scope. Kudos to crbmoa who let me take dibs on the scope even though he put his name down first. Quite a guy!

First time I turned the iron on in two weeks!

Build Reports / WIP: new testing rig
April 04, 2011, 11:24:55 AM
I've been meaning to build a separate rig for build testing for quite a while. The hope is to leave my prototyping board ready for long-term breadboard action instead of having to dismantle it to test out if my builds work.

Here's the little fella. He'll have bi-polar power supply on the small BB, and there's a 1/8" jack on the enclosure to plug in an audio probe. The larger breadboard is to plug in wires to connect/swap PCB mounted pots out.

Hopefully I will get to wire him up this week!

Errata, Corrections, Revisions / Typo: Quasar doc
March 28, 2011, 12:35:25 AM
There is a typo in the "RC" BOM. Previously it listed the Bass pot with a value of 250kB and the Drive pot with a value of 50kB. These need to be reversed: Bass = 50kB, Drive = 250kB.

Someone was also nice enough to let me know that the stock IC is supposedly a JRC4557D. Info on this IC is a bit sketchy, but this customer did provide a link to a possible source for it: http://www.dalbani.co.uk/index.php

Thanks, Simon!

The pdf document for the Quasar has been updated to correct the typo.

Vinyl stickers, anyone? I'm not much on swag, but a sticker could be cool.

This worked out pretty well. The dimensions came out right and fit just how they need to. Too bad I reversed the sleeve and tip on the DC jack. Oh well, positive ground fuzz, population: you.

I bought this Pedaltrain thing like 5 weeks ago. I finally attached the Pedal Power to it. I think this is what I will put on there. I'm pretty sure the Flange is broken, though. Meh, no one will notice.

Global Annoucements / 03.18 - Setback (temporary)
March 18, 2011, 04:45:44 AM
The CNC machine has beat me for now. I'm getting close to the results I want, but I'm also still far away from getting this up to any kind of production speed. So, I'm going to put it on the back-burner for a bit and re-open ordering for the hand-made boards. I'll keep at it as time allows, but it may take another week or two before I'm really comfortable turning production over to it.

Ordering is again available on the Projects page. I'll get the new projects together here in a couple of days, too!
