Open Discussion / Re: Your Favorite Strat Pick-Ups
April 09, 2018, 06:29:01 PM
I've got two Strats, one with Fralin Vintage Hot and the other with Lace Sensor B/S/R. Like you'd expect, the Fralin's are pretty vintage sounding. The Lace are all around great, not too vintage sounding, but well balanced for lots of styles of music. If I only could have one I'd actually go with the Lace Sensor...but that's also because I've been playing that set for a couple of decades and I am really used to the sound. I'd like to try the Texas Specials someday, too.

Whatever the case, I put in a toggle switch on all my Strats to put the neck and bridge in parallel for psuedo-Tele sounds. Can't live without it.

VFE Projects / Re: Blueprint build

It is a digital delay chip: the PT2399 is not a BBD (bucket brigade device). The "analog modeled" is just market speak for "we added filtering to kill the high end on successive repeats so it sounds analog".

Looks like an interesting PT2399 delay.    I see that VFE describes this pedal as an "analog voiced" delay, but aren't all of the BBD memory chips digital delays?

The BBD is itself analog (made up of thousands of discrete transistors). The PT2399 is digital and uses rudimentary analog / digital conversion with on-board memory to create the delay.

What Jon suggested - make R9 a 1k5 or 2k. You can also increase C11 to 68n. Maybe not both mods though - that might make it too dark!

Another cool trick is one Forrest came up with: instead of tying pin1 of the Delay control to ground, do it on pin2. Now connect pin1 to a large cap (like another 100n) and put in parallel with the existing C9 cap. As you turn the delay pot all the way up, the new cap goes to ground and increases your filtering. He's a smart one.

VFE Projects / Blueprint build
April 07, 2018, 12:57:54 AM
I'm pushing through trying to get the remaining VFE projects built and ready to release. Got the Blueprint all finished up an documented. I think I will end up needing more switching micro-controllers before releasing it, though.

All in all a great delay. There are a couple non-typical elements to the circuit design that I like and never thought of. Modulation seems just right, too. Not over the top but musical.

Alright, do you plan to release Focus anytime soon, Brian?

Yes, although I do need to get a couple parts for it first. I'll see about including that in the next VFE release.

It is possible to use two charge pumps to convert a 9v supply into -18v, however there are several reasons not to do so. 1) possible heterodyning/noise when using it for an audio application that also uses a clock (like the TR uses to drive the BBD), 2) sufficient output current available from the two charge pump configuration to run the effect (maybe? I don't know for sure) and 3) the conversion is not efficient, you will likely end up with something more like -17.5v and you need a supply with a solid -18v to use the LM7915 to get a steady -15v operation needed for the TR. IOW, two charge pumps + a regulator doesn't seem too promising.

But, it would only take a few minutes to breadboard the power supply scheme and see if it works with the TR. I just can't say that it will. This shows how to do it for a TC1044, but the same should work with an LT1054.

Won't work. The two different power requirements are not compatible for using a voltage inverter. IOW, you cannot feed -18v into a charge pump to get 9v out and you cannot feed +18v into a charge pump because it will fry. Maybe there is some other type of voltage inverter out there that is capable of it, but the 1044, LT1054 definitely are not.

So, I realized this Deluxe Mobius idea is better suited for the FV-1 since it already has stereo outputs. Many fewer parts required. Drawing up the idea already :)

VFE Projects / Klein Bottle!

My Kickstarter Klein Bottle PCB and pots arrived today. I recognize some of the library parts used in this layout  :)

This will be a fun build, I hope.

The Triplet: Compressor, Octave and Distortion in one
The Scream: Tricked out TS-style OD
Mobius Strip: Dual Delay

All documentation is up, too.

Actually, it would be interesting to do a similar idea with MN3005. And, voice each delay line differently. I might look into that. Maybe do it in stereo do each delay goes to a separate amp. Might be awesome (and complicated).

Thanks for putting out the Mobius Strip next. Was definitely one of the VFE pedals I was looking forward to building the most.

The Mobius is definitely cool. The way he implemented the dual feedback options is very clever (I wish I had thought of it!) The only thing I wish it had is two independent mix knobs instead of one master mix. But, that would not work for the standard VFE knob configuration. Anyway, I think people will enjoy it. It's a bit of a hard build, but worth it.

Having said that... Bean, maybe you pick up where this leaves off?  Seriously, in terms of a subscription service it's a revenue stream for you and you document how you think thru a project and then rather than just buy a board we up the ante with paying for the process attached to it.  I know I'd commit in a heartbeat.

Actually, I have been kicking around that idea for several months - a complete video tutorial course on pedal building from concept - breadboard - Eagle design - prototype all the way up to releasing a commercial pedal. But, I'd probably just release the whole thing free. Or, maybe a small Kickstarter with the finished PCB or kit for some support (with the course material still being free). I'd kinda like to do it but it's a serious commitment. Maybe, though!

Mobius Strip and The Scream docs are up. I should have the Triplet finished tomorrow.
