Build Reports / Re: sharkfin (lfo cracking)
March 17, 2018, 12:40:47 AM
The LFO is disengaged when the switch is set to filter only so you should definitely not be hearing it then. And certainly not in bypass. Are you sure you soldered the 3pdt toggle in the right way?

Other things I would look at with noise in bypass - wiring and power supply. More details and a pic would help here.

Finally, I can design my dream project: 1,000 buffers in series.

I don't think it's a locked chip, sonnyboy27. Voltages are still way bad.

Try this: take out the PT2399 and measure pins 3 and 4 in the socket. Do you get 0v now?

Where did you get your PT2399 from?
#2389
The formula for calculating resistors in parallel is 1/R= 1/R1 + 1/R2.
With an 18k and 2k resistor you get 1/R=1/18+1/2 = 10/18 so, R=1.8k

Better to just use a 20k there.

Some of your voltages on the left side of the PT2399 are really off. Your ground is reading .1v. That's definitely not ground. Pins 7 and 8 should read between .6 and .7v.

First thing you need to do is clean up that soldering. Re-melt every joint on there and check carefully around the PT2399 for any solder bridges. Then re-measure your voltages. If you are still reading .1v on pins 3 or 4 then you've got some major ground issue. If you have a continuity checker verify your ground wires have continuity with pins 3 and 4 of the PT2399.

Brian, with a little bit of planning and careful savings, I am fully confident that you can once again own a Peavey Bandit.  Dreams do come true.

Forrest can attest to the fact that I did indeed design a pedal version of the Bandit. Both channels!

I don't get half of what you're trying to say here, it sounds like the kind of financial shenanigans which melted down the economy a decade ago, but methinks that when you have debts in any shape or form, guitars (or basically anything) are not something you should buy, period!

I'm sure that Jimi can manage his own finances.

That said, in my own lean times I've sold off gear without too much thought. Occasionally I've come to regret it but most of the time I realize I still have too much so I don't dwell on it. Probably because for 10 years all I had was one semi-working Strat, two pedals and a dang Peavey Bandit amp!

My biggest regret was selling off my original Ibanez s540 in my 20's to pay my friggin' rent. I felt terrible about it for years. I actually bought another one a few years ago but flipped it pretty quickly when I realized "yeah, I don't play the way this guitar wants me too anymore" :) Luckily I got that out of my system.

$8 is not a bad price for a genuine chip from a reliable vendor. Remember these are not being produced any longer so you are looking at ever increasing prices or rolling the dice on an unknown vendor. Depends on how much effort/time you want to put into sourcing and testing chips. You might get lucky...or not!

I just checked my records: in 2009 I paid $7.95 for MN3101 from smallbear. So, yeah that's still a good price.

Might as well go all the way. Light it on fire for a few seconds!

So, does it mean there is a restriction to build it? I just want to clarify and don't want to hurt other builders feeling, including Thorpy.

Of course not. People should build/do whatever they want. The "rules of conduct" refer to talking about other members with curtousey and respect. That's all.

No other reason to make this other than to say this is my 8,000th post on the forum. Here is a picture of me looking confused and lost during a recording session in 2005. Why? Because I found it on my HD. Also the last time I had a ponytail (instead of no hair). Not really sure why it looks like I have only one arm.

Actually, funny story about this. The more I look at the pic I recognize the terror I was feeling. Thirty minutes before I left to drive to Dallas from Austin to do a week of recording my wife told me we were going to have a baby. We were not married at the time and it was unplanned. Obviously, everything worked out because we are happily married for 12 years now and have an incredible and talented 11 yo daughter. But, man was I scared then. During that week we recorded basic tracks for two albums and played a show. I didn't tell anyone what was going on with me. I was so exhausted by the show I drank 3 Red Bulls to get through it. Sadly, that was the last live performance we ever did.

It's funny to reflect on things. If, at 27yo, I had not been feeling lonely and desperate because I had not been able to find a girlfriend (even though I was playing a rock band!) I would have never posted a total joke of an personal ad online. I would have never met my wife, had my daughter and most likely madbeanpedals would not exist. Sometimes lifelong experiences can be reduced to a single moment in time. I don't mean that in a melancholy way...just that we all have these experiences but don't always recognize them.

Okay, enough internet today.

Awesome work and those purple knobs are the bomb.

I have zero opinion on tracing Thorpy's stuff (whose pedals I admire) but I'd like to remind everyone that Thorpy is a member here and rules of conduct apply when talking about fellow forum members.

I don't order many parts from Tayda but I've never had a problem with their 3362 trimmers. That and sockets are about all I use them for.

Mouser has a great supply of the 3362: https://www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Potentiometers-Trimmers-Rheostats/Trimmer-Resistors-Through-Hole/_/N-9q0yt?P=1yzrzgu&Keyword=3362p&FS=True

No, but those 3366w are multi-turn trimpots which I would not recommend. Multiturn allows for much finer tuning than single turn but it also means you are going to be turning them forever to make any noticeable adjustment. They just are not suited for most guitar pedal trimmers. The exception might be in something that benefits from fine calibration like clock adjustment on an analog delay.

Unfortunately, you'll have to get used to the idea of using more than one vendor to get all the parts you need for a given pedal project. It's rare that any one has everything. I don't know why smallbear doesn't stock the 3362. Tons of people use them.

Wow, that is sweet! And, yeah I really need to get that Harbinger 2 out. It's basically been done for a year.  :'(
