The pot/resistor combo replaces R18. The resistor in this case prevents the entire signal from going to ground. It can be as simple as: lug3 of tone pot --- 25kB pot --- 4k7 --- ground. That combo can give you plenty of range on the pot.

Open Discussion / Shriveling beans (thread title change)

Just realizing today that:
I graduated college 20 years ago (97).
I graduated HS almost 30 years ago (90).

You guys in your 20's live it up as much as you can. Believe me it goes faster than you can possibly imagine. Before you know it you'll be looking forward to a 10 pm bedtime and glad you get to wake up early and start your day.

- changed thread title because it's funnier

Okay, it's going to be tomorrow before this is finished. I'm still working on it and there's actually more to cover than I thought. I'm working on examples of the external controls, etc, and more thorough explanations of some of the operation and it's just taking time. There's actually a lot going on in this thing even though it's a pretty simple circuit.

I'll have it up ASAP.

Why do I get the feeling that "great features" wasn't how you originally drafted that sentence?   :P ;D

We f--k up all his designs. He's been good about reeling in feature creep (something I am way way guilty of).

Seconded on those LED indicators. That's pretty rad!

Hey Brian,
Know you're busy but any update on the Wumpus build doc?  and I really appreciate the free board.  I don't know if I will get this to work but I will sure take a stab at it.

Apologies for the delay. I will get the build doc up tomorrow. Just have to put a few finishing touches on it;.

Seconded on the 1/2oz copper, if possible. It etches wicked fast and is plenty good for faceplates.

Haha...nice try. You are definitely not stealing my idea for a diesel-powered reverb.

Oh...crap.

This is straight-forward as can be. 1590B with option for solder lug or PCB pins mounted 16mm pots. A wired switch for square or triangle wave (this can be omitted if you jumper pads 3&2 together for just triangle wave). LFO far enough away from the audio part and separate ground planes with a bridge between (reduce any possible LFO noise). You should be able to use the cheap Tayda LDRs for this. In that case I would recommend 20k or 25k for the volume trimmer and 220pF for C2. 1MB for the Rate pot will be okay, it will just bunch up a bit more so C taper is preferred.

We can change anything you want...just let me know.

I'm gonna have to get back to you on that.  They are looking to buy in bulk so all the projects will probably be 1590b.  As for the pots.  They already have a stock of 16mm solder lug pots that they probably would like to use.  They are left over from their first two workshops, an atari punk console and a mono theremin. But I'll ask them and see what they think  Another important consideration I guess is no fancy vactrols.  Ideally run of the mill led's taped to easy to find ldr's.

Quick question.  Do you have a guestimate of how much it would cost per pcb for a tremolo like this?  How long does it take from ordering to receiving the pcbs?

Thanks again.

It depends on how many you order. A 100 board run of 1590B would come out to something like 50 cents a board. You can go down to 50 boards for a slightly higher per-board cost. But, there's also shipping to consider into the total cost as well. I think $75-80 all in for 100 boards is a pretty good guess. Turn-around time is usually a couple of weeks.

Errata, Corrections, Revisions / Old School correction
December 01, 2017, 01:59:36 PM
In the Old School build docs I mentioned that the LED on the PCB blinks with the tremolo so you could make it an external indicator if you like. What I failed to notice at the time is that the LED brightness is inverted from the tremolo amplitude. IOW, the LED dims as the tremolo peaks rather than the other way around. So, this might be confusing for some people who are used to seeing the LED get bright when the trem is loudest. Take that into consideration when building.

Madbean, thanks for offering your help.  You must be pretty busy. Do you sleep at all?

Sure, I can do the tremolo. How about a 1590B sized one? I'm thinking 9mm right angle pots would be easier for first time builders but they are a little more expensive than 16mm so that is a consideration. Just tell me what specs you need and I can bang it out in like an hour or two.

And yeah - I sleep!

Just to add to Scruffie's offer, I'd be willing to design one PCB specifically for the cause if it's something straight-forward like a fuzz or tremolo...at no charge on my part. I would provide Gerbers for manufacturing and walk you though where to get them done.
