Nice bass :) do you get feedback issues with hollowbody basses?

None at all actually. But I also never used much OD or anything with it. When I was gigging as a bass player it was usually a Whammy pedal and delay so feedback never really was an issue at stage volume. This bass has a very cool sound...lots of mid-range punch that's perfect for the way I play.

Awesome.

Is it named after Bertrand Russell?

No. One day I just decided it looked like a Bertrand. It's helping me make demos for the next Radiophonic record which is exciting for me, at least.

Bertrand the bass is finally out of his case after many months. No reason to post this other than it's awesome. He's been with me since '99.

(sorry for the mess....my office is due for a top down cleaning)

There will be less gain available with the Level control but there should still be a lot on tap. A 220k or 300k should be enough. If you go too high then low Level settings might be a bit less dynamic but this also depends on the guitar pickup output to some degree.

You could use a 1M trimmer in place of R2, but it's easier to just raise the value to 220k - 470k.

Are you getting the fizz when the comp pot is all the way up? The clipping diodes could be a cause. Your voltages look fine.

Any chance of you already posting the BOM for the Tractor Beam? :) I'm putting in an order from a few supplier this weekend and the TM would be my next build then.  :)

I'll try to get the BOM together this weekend. There are a couple specialized parts that will need links.

VFE Projects / Patreon Support
September 02, 2017, 02:09:18 PM
If you are a member of the VFE Patreon group support is also available here on the forum for the Patreon effects builds. Please feel free to ask questions and receive help on your builds. I'm not quite up to speed on the new designs yet but I will be building a Dragon up next week. I'll do my best to help with any basic build questions, etc. Specific questions about rewards, shipping, etc should still be directed to Peter through Patreon.

Peter has also posted a video on building the Patreon effects. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet but that is another resource of information at your disposal.

Well, they keep saying that, but I reckon there has to be a point to a journey as well. I find DIY delays to be a bitch to build, a bitch to get working, a bitch to troubleshoot, and even if they work they still can do less then my TC Flashback, which I picked up for less then a hundred euro. Your mileage may vary of course but not exactly a fun filled adventure the way I see it.

Yes, I actually agree. I had a Timeline which I sold and eventually replaced it with an Alter Ego which I love. That's the delay on my main board. I can get close to some of the TL and AE with DIY but of course never quite the feature-set or versatility of either. Still, I find myself taking out the DIY delay builds quite often and finding uses for them (on records even).

(derail talk)
I tend to look at DIY building more like a craft rather than a means to an end (don't get me wrong - both approaches are completely valid because it's totally up to the individual). There are lots of missteps and small victories in practicing a craft and little by little you refine your abilities. It's a lot like playing guitar; the learning is never done....if you want that way. Sure, you can learn some cool songs and some stank riffs to impress yourself and others. But to really push yourself you have to become a bit of an autodidact. Practicing music as a craft is endless and so is DIY IMO. Zappa said "Music is the best!". madbean says "DIY is pretty, pretty, pretty good!"

Pale Horse and Alpha Dog are now back in stock. I'm still working on the Tractor Beam - got a bug in my build to figure out. I expect the TB will go up for sale sometime next week.

Bypass is over-rated anyway. Just leave all the pedals on all the time I say.

General Questions / Re: 3PDT pop noise reduction

In your experience: do you think a pop noise could be also a consequence of the PCB design? Using the power and ground planes, if the traces fragment too much the continuity of these planes, a pop noise could be induced when switching on the pedal the first time. Could it be possible?

Can't really speak from experience on this since I never use power planes (just ground planes top and bottom). Bad PCB design could cause several issues including noise and excessive parasitic capacitance. Maybe those could contribute to switch pop. But, designing a good PCB isn't terribly hard and I think most of the DIY'ers do an excellent job (I'm hardly the authority here). I guess there are other variables, too, like power supplies, other effects in the chain...maybe even cabling. But the likely culprit is usually a tiny amount of DC getting amplified through a circuit via mechanical switching.

Analog delays sound great but are a nightmare to build, and have way too short a delay time. PT2399 delays offers a little more time, but its still limited. Even the most fancy DIY delays are relatively simple in what they can do compared to a Boss or TC delay pedal. This is one area where its just not worth the hassle to go DIY and just buy a Boss or TC delay instead. Less hassle, less aggravation, more capabilities. And its not like you even save money by going DIY with delays, which was one of the biggest draws that got me into DIY pedal building, as a DD-7 or Flashback is not that expensive.

It's the adventure not the destination!
