More goodness!

One more update: I'm knee deep in shipping orders ATM. I should be done tomorrow and at that point I will work on getting the demo done for the Mandroid. My build will have pretty much all the options on it so I hope I can give you guys a good sense of what you can do with it. Just need to etch up my faceplate and get it in a box first.

General Questions / Re: Aquaboy weird distortion

The compander is just mis-biased on the expander outputs and so hitting the rails.

I can't remember the calculation off the top of my head but you should be able to stick a resistor from pin 12 to ground of the NE570 and that'll shift the bias, aim for 4.5V on pins 10 & 11 (or 3V if you prefer to keep it like the build doc, it shouldn't really matter).

Start with 10k.

IIRC I think around 20k-24k from the old Aquapuss version...or maybe that was Bajaman's addition to his layout from around 2009.

Adam - I'd still suggest audio probing the pins I suggested. Esp. the inputs and outputs of IC2B (14/12 and 10/11) to make sure that's the only source of distortion.

I would audio probe the circuit to see where the distortion is being introduced. You should check pins 6, 7, 14 or 15, and 10 or 11 of the NE570 as well as pins 7 and 3 or 4 of the MN3005.

Not sure about your voltage differences...where did you get your NE570 from?

I know you're super busy but would there be anyway you could post the build doc for the Coral Reef or at least a parts list?  Would like to see what I need to collect before you release it.

This is the best I can do until I get a build doc typed up. But, it gives you a list of everything you need (except for the regular parts you need on the switching board). On the 10uF BP - smallbear has them but they are too large. I got mine from Mouser.

One final adjustment - I deducted a penny on the international prices of the AD and PH makes the shipping work out better for customers. Maths.

VFE boards already sold out or cart bug?

Whoops, little bug. Should be fixed now. Might have to refresh the page once.

Now Available:
New Release: Mandroid "Pitch Shifter"! Re-stocks: Alpha Dog, Pale Horse, Aquaboy, Mudbunny, Current Lover, Naughty Fish, Runt and Kingslayer.

Note on the Alpha Dog and Pale Horse:
I've made a temporary measure on ordering these which is price adjustments to account for the required 1st Class postage on Canadian an International orders. This is on top of the normal "Flats" shipping fee. It mostly works out (I'll eat a couple dollars on shipping here and there but no big deal). In some cases, if you are ordering multiple items along with the Pale Horse or Alpha Dog your shipping fee may come out high. No worries, I will refund any unused postage when I ship your order. This is only temporary until I get the new store going.

Also, there are 25 of each available in this batch of VFE. Once they are gone I will have more to put up but they will no longer include the W1MC pot. I only have enough to cover 50 orders. Unfortunately, getting more of those pots looks to require 1000 order minimum which is not feasible for me. No worries, though - a regular 1MB pot will work in these builds. The difference is the W1MC has a center dentent and the taper is slightly different. A 1MB pot will still get all the same tones...just in slightly different spots. I will update the docs once the current batch of AD and PH boards are sold.

Let me know if anyone has questions.

It's looking like Friday instead of tomorrow. The boards are in but I still have some work to do before I can put them up for sale. Saturday morning at the latest...most likely Friday afternoon.

Welp, I'm pretty sure this is going to be an Etcher's Paradise project. What an awesome trace by digi2t!

It's funny how I was so sure that the Cannon would be the least popular of this new batch (not for lack of quality...just seems more niche to me) but it turns out to be the one we are getting lots of inquiries about. I just don't know shit about the pedal market.

VFE Projects / Choral Reef
July 17, 2017, 03:13:29 PM
Finally finished building this one. It's a really nice sounding chorus. I used my "fake MN3005" (actually an MN3008) from smallbear for this one. The Width/Feedback pots and Range toggle give it a whole lot of variety. Shouldn't be too long for this one to get released. It will be a very challenging build for some (actually everyone)!

You shouldn't hear anything coming out of R2, but you definitely should on pin7 of IC1. If you have no signal on pin7 then IC1 is your problem area. If you are sure your soldering is good in that area and your parts are correct, then try swapping for a different IC. I'd remove all the other ICs while you are doing this...you want to tackle the problem linearly.

Open Discussion / Soft Bypass w/o micro-controller
July 13, 2017, 10:56:26 PM
I was watching some youTube videos and came across this:

(his channel is great, BTW)

Anyway, it got me thinking of how to adopt his idea for pedal bypass. Turns out it is very easy! Hence, soft bypass switching using only a few transistors. It doesn't work perfectly (can get a a false trigger now and then) but it's reasonable enough. Plus, it will toggle on and off rapidly if you hold the footswtich down...I call that a feature! Anyway, I've only bread-boarded this so far but I do have a little PCB designed for the Etcher's Paradise so look for that soon after I get a chance to test it some more. Or, try bread-boarding it yourself!

A note: his schematic has a little error in it (1M and 47k resistor values are swapped) which I have corrected on my schem drawing of the bypass.

We just got a 50W laser at work that seems to be blow through everything (although I haven't tried a black enclosure yet).  In fact, I had to dial it back way more than 40% because it was burning back a bit too much.

Yes, but can it heat a house full of popcorn from space?
