VFE Projects / Re: VFE Projects FAQ
April 01, 2017, 10:21:45 PM
Yeah, PPP should be a big help. I do have a production enclosure and I've already scanned that and re-created the drill spots for it. So, there's an option for those who want to drill their own (like me).

I have the Eagle schematics for most of them, but unfortunately they are not easily decipherable. I believe they may have been imported from another program so they are kinda hard to pick apart. However, I will have ongoing discussions with Peter so I will ask when appropriate if he has better drawn schems for the ones I am missing. If worse comes to worst, I'll see about re-drawing them myself.

I'll look over it more carefully later today. What diodes are those?

Squeal can happen for a couple of reasons in the Kingslayer and its not so much the KS circuit design vs. the Klon but rather the type of active tone circuit the Klon uses. It adds a substantial amount of high frequency boost after the gain stage so when you are running lots of gain and volume and then add lots of treble boost on top of that, the opamp pretty much rails. This is why I point out that its more of a "two up one down" kinda effect. IOW - if you are running two knobs all the way up the other knob is going to have to be pretty far down.

One thing that can make the problem worse is the type of diodes you use for the alternate clipping. Personally, I like the way LEDs sound, but they clip far less than germaniums, which means more output which exacerbates the problem. So, you can use something with a lower voltage drop like 1n914 or a different kind of germanium diode. Alternatively, you can can use a larger value cap for C15 or reduce R21. But at that point, you are starting to get pretty far away from the "Klon-ness" of the thing.

Not sure about the 10uF between pins 1 and 2 of the voltage inverter...haven't seen that before and AFAIK it's not in the application notes for the chip so it's not something I would advise doing. You don't want to lift pin1 because that is boosting the internal oscillator frequency of the inverter out of the audio range.

Damn really? I was expecting $20 or more. Thats way better than a bargain, that's a steal.

Madbean,You're a champion among men.

Thank you, but the kudos belong to Peter. His generosity has allowed this all to happen.

Cool well based on the interest I'll see about getting the Reef released in the next batch.

No it's a mistake I made on building the PCB which I forgot to point out and correct in the build doc later on. The diodes should be oriented according to their bands on the silk screen. My mistake was putting in D3 in reverse on the build demonstration. I will make a note of that in the doc and update it. Thanks for the heads-up.

My guess is that they will be between $10-14 each (audio board, switching board, custom pots and micro-controller included). Same price for all projects. I'll know for sure in a few days.

The VFE section of the forum is now available: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?board=91.0

Nothing there yet but feel free to start posting questions there, too. My answers may be somewhat limited since I have not yet build all these projects, but I'll do the best I can.

VFE Projects / VFE Projects FAQ
March 30, 2017, 12:28:04 AM
I've created a separate area for these projects to keep information more easily accessible. Please post all questions and tech help requests for the VFE projects here.

-GENERAL FAQ-
- Peter Rutter has donated his remaining PCBs for the discontinued VFE pedals to MBP for release to the DIY community. He is awesome like that!
- These are the actual production PCBs used to build VFE pedals.
- Each project PCB also includes the VFE switching board and micro-controller for soft-bypass goodness.
- Many of these projects require custom pots. These pots are included with the appropriate PCBs (while there is stock).
- The projects will be released in batches of two or three per month for the remainder of 2017.
- There are thousands of boards, so this stuff will be in stock for a long time. Some projects are fewer in quantity and I will inform everyone when this is the case.
- I have limited numbers of switching boards and micro-controllers, so the release schedule may fluctuate depending on how quickly I can get more.
- Pre-drilled enclosures for these projects may soon be available from Pedal Parts Plus.
- The price for each project will be the same. I am still working out the details on this.
- For international customers, 1st Class USPS shipping will be required due to the included pots. I believe I will be able to cap this at $13 shipping per order. Obviously, if a project does not require the custom pots, then the cheap shipping option will be used.
- For domestic orders, shipping will be the same as always.

Project List
Alpha Dog
Blueprint
Blues King
Bumblebee
Choral Reef
Darkhorse
Distortion 3
Enterprise
Fiery Red Horse
Focus
Merman
Mobius Strip
Old School
Pale Horse
Scream
Springboard
Triplet
Triumvirate
White Horse

Last and Most Important!
Peter/VFE does not provide support for these projects. Under no circumstance should you contact him with questions or support requests for the projects available at MBP. This is an expressed condition of this offer, so please respect that. I will try to make myself available here regularly as the information "nexus" builds for these projects. That said, I do believe he would appreciate any acknowledgement for his generosity to the DIY community so please feel free to show some love :)

Do you expect to have stock of them all in the end or do you expect to them to sell out as released? If I could pay for them as they are released but have them all ship together when ready in some sort of hold system would be OK.
Does every single project have a custom part that cannot be bought elsewhere?

It's going to be a bit of "play by ear" because I only have a few hundred switching boards and micro-controllers right now (obviously I will get more down the road). So, I will likely release the projects in batches of 50 to ensure I can provide everything at the same time.

Not all the projects will require custom pots, but no they are not available elsewhere. These were specifically made for VFE. It's not like other pots can't be subbed, though. Not all projects require custom parts, either. For instance, the second batch is likely to be the Blues King and White Horse. BK has two pots included, WH does not require custom pots.

For international shipping, I might just hard-cap it at $13 1st Class and eat any overages. We'll see. I haven't figured out all the fine details yet but I am willing to listen to suggestions.

Hope that helps!

that is very cool, my only concern is how much International shipping will go up from the price of just Pcbs?

They will require regular 1st Class shipping international. There is no way to offer the cheapest shipping option because of the pots, unfortunately. If this is a big problem for people, I suppose I could offer the cheaper option without the pots but I'm not quite sure how that would work. What do you guys think?

Cool, I am interested in the Alpha Dog for sure.
Are there any custom type parts you will need to supply/sell with the VFE pedals?
Thanks

The custom parts will be included. Also, the switching board PCB and micro-controller are included with every project.

The first two projects will be the Alpha Dog and Pale Horse. I expect these to release by the end of next week! Typing up documentation and getting things ready.

Here is my Pale Horse build. You can see I did a couple of kludges for parts I did not have. Amazing how you can have 2000 different components but still not have that one thing you need...   :)
