Is there an easy way to drill the boards? That's the only reason I haven't experimented with etching.

Yes, there is. But, it depends on how much you want to invest. The most efficient way is using a Dremel and the drill press attachment they make for it. That and some carbide bits are all you need to make very high quality DIY boards. When I do the tutorial, I will go over exactly which tools I use. I've used this stuff to make thousands of boards!

Good! Each project file will have the project doc and both the drill and PNP files in Photoshop format. So, if you want to etch multiple boards at once you can pull up the separate image files into one master sheet. Should make things easy. I do have to build the webpage for it but I think that will only take an afternoon.

Oh no!
The last post is now dated 2014
Those that mean that this gives Mad another 2 years to get this done?

Haha, not at all. In fact I think the first batch will be going up sometime this weekend.

The Shopping List on the CD2015 incorrectly listed the 1uF as film, when it should be electrolytic (as it is on the actual PCB). This has been corrected and re-uploaded.

I need about twice as much space/storage that I actually have but I've accepted that this is all I'm gonna get!

Open Discussion / Re: PT2399 in a Cave Dweller

The PT2399 is pretty clean up to around 250-300ms, which is the max delay it is spec'd for. Most delay projects push that into the 600ms territory including the CD. So, at that point you have to filter it pretty heavily to get rid of the noise it introduces. But, you can't go too far because then it ends up darkening the delay in the "good" range, too.

I'm not sure which version of the CD you are building. The 2015 version has a pretty significant LP filter at the delay output (at around 1.6kHz). So, if you are building that one and still getting a significant amount of noise, it could be the batch of chips you have but I can't say for sure. What I can tell you is that it is best to avoid buying the cheapest you can find of the PT2399 (cough, Tayda) because they may well be out of spec. I have chips from a few different places but I keep one or two of the Smallbear ones on hand as reference chips (I mark them with a Sharpie). That way I can compare performance of other chips to some kind of benchmark.

Anyway, on the 2015 version you could try changing that filter a bit if you want to experiment (instead of just running out and buying more chips). Here are two suggestions (one or the other but not both):
Change R9 from 1k to 2k.
Change C11 from 47n to 100n.

Possibly you have used a wrong value for R3 or R4. It should be 220R and 470R, resp. What color are the bands on your R3 and R4 resistors? Also, did you use the 20k trimmer, or a different value?

Well, did you at least solder the socket to the socket? Cause that's how you win.

You know what I think you are right. The clock frequency range is different b/w the 3101 and 3102! But, no I don't think C33 should be changed. Let me look through my builds and find the Bl3208 version I built. I'll see about getting you some better reference to go from.

MBP is always stank. I will get the tutorials back up ASAP but I may move them over to the regular part of the website. I'd like to have both webpage and pdf versions of it.

If you are happy with the modulation then no need to change. But, if it is too extreme then you can increase R50/R51 or put a large resistor in the optional R56 spot (I think 470k was suggested).

Yeah I actually like the Vela quite a bit too. The offset body does it for me. It reminds me a lot of my old Peavey Patriot guitar.

Open Discussion / PRS Redux thread
January 25, 2016, 04:42:33 PM
So, a few months ago I mentioned I was after something PRS and I think that thread was nuked in the crash. So, I'm starting again cause I just can't let it go and I'm in the process of selling off older gear for funds. Basically, trading off a few mid-to-inexpensive guitars that I don't really need for something pretty great (and most of all well-balanced and very playable).

My local Sam Ash has a fairly pitiful selection so I'm going to try the Guitar Center in a few weeks to get a hand-on feel for a few different models. Seriously, at S.A. all the non-SE models were missing knobs and some even with broken pots! Just sad. I'm thinking if I go new it would be either a Mira Semi-Hollow (looks awesome to me) or maybe one of the new S2 Satins (like the Single-Cut which is not terribly expensive). Or possibly a used DGT.

So, any opinions from experience on these models would be greatly appreciated. I know what I don't want which is something really bling-y in terms of finish. Just not my thing! Humbuckers with split coil option is best and I don't necessarily care about having a tremolo.

Thanks, Brian, for the opportunity. I'm so excited about the prize!!!

Dude, if I manage to pull off everything I have planned for this year you will be sick of building MBP projects.  8)
