General Questions / Re: BL3208 and reverse voltage
March 07, 2014, 02:17:45 PM
You can use BL3208 in place of MN3005 (if you use 2x for every one MN3005). You do not need to use reverse polarity to power it, but you need to set the BBD jumpers on the board to match the v3205 instead of the MN3005. This flips the power and ground between pins 1 and 5. The Dirtbag runs on negative ground no matter what BBD you are using...the needed change is in the jumpers.

Sonically, I much prefer the BL3208 to the v3205 and you will get closer to an MN3005 with them IMO. They do have better headroom and also the decay sounds better to me. However, the max voltage you can use is 10v on the BL3208. So, you might consider using a charge pump on a 9v supply then regulating it down with a 10v regulator (yes they do exist). Also, you will need to adjust the two resistor values on the compander so that the output voltage on pin 7 of your NE571 is about 5v.

A side note: you know that hugely expensive Toneczar delay? It's 8xBL3208 running on 10v (the rest of the audio path is 15v). FYI.

Think of the Bloviator as an enhancement to whatever you run into it. So, different EQ settings can be accentuated with it or not. Actually, an EQ and Bloviator type circuit in one box would be a nice build, although sometimes it's better to have your EQ in different places in your signal chain. If you did it with separate ins and outs for each effect...that would be slick.

Normal electros are about 11mm in height whereas the micro ones are 4-5mm. It makes all the difference. Alternatively, you could use tantalum in place of the electros which will fit.

The DD2 is going to have the option of an additional output to drive another effect. Forrest, I'll send you one of the proto PCBs if you want...I have an extra. Plus, it is tap tempo :)

This one has been off the radar for a while but not cancelled.

General Questions / Re: GreenBean 2014 today?

Here's a tease. I'm not terribly happy with the silkscreen job on the Green Bean. The one pictured is one of the better ones. A number of them are lighter, more inconsistent with the black ink. Not so much that you can't read it, but just not quite up to the standard I'd like to have. Maybe iTead isn't too good with white solder mask?

1/8W naturally fit in a 5mm spaced hole. This is the same spacing as I use for film caps and what is used on most of the baby boards, too. 1/4W fit perfectly in 7.5m spaced holes and larger. You can use a 1/4W in a 5mm spaced hole, but it has to be standing up rather than laying flat. This is not so good when you are building an effect into a 1590A which is severely limited in "height space".

It is in transit, but still overseas. I expect it will be delivered within a couple more days. In the meantime, I will get the docs worked up for the three new layouts (GB, Slow Loris, Road Rage) and posted to the Projects Page.

The ones listed as coming on March 7th will be more like the 20th as of now. I will update this info ASAP.

Brian, I can mail you a Bearhug V2 to use. Like, tomorrow morning. Would it get to you in time?

Thanks, but I did not see your post in time. I appreciate the offer but it turns out I did not need a compressor.

The session went great! Turns out I had just what I needed with this board to complete the overdubs. I went in without any particular ideas in mind and we just listened to the tunes one at a time. When I heard something to add, we futz around with the Mobius and Timeline to find interesting sounds. Some tunes were literally one or two note overdubs, but really interesting sounds. I'm very pleased with the Mobius, and had not spent too much time with it beforehand. Mostly, we used some pattern trem and a bit of quadrature. Swell made several appearances.

Hopefully I can put up a sample track soon. This record is a very big step away from the previous and in a good way. It is so chill...very moody.

Build Reports / Studio board

Heading out of town for a couple of days to put some finishing touches on the new record. Finally re-assembled the pedalboard. I'm taking the prototypes for the Function F(x) fuzz and also our overdrive (both sound bad ass). Plus the Ditto, Mobius and Timeline. Only missing a compressor, but I did not have time to box up my BearHug :(

I'd love to build a tube headphone amp. If you guys find a good all in one kit, we could make it a group build project together. That would be fun!

I'll second Lace pickups. I love the sound of the Red, Silver, Blue.

My main Strat has the neck/bridge mod, and it is essential. I also have it where you can run them in series rather than parallel. I like that quite a bit.

I would not do anything too radical as far as removing the tremolo or permanently altering it. You will kill the re-sale value. A block on both sides of the cavity attached via double sided foam tape would do the trick. Plus, it might even increase body resonance a bit. Maybe not because of the tape.

He uses a thick 3M double sided foam under his PCBs to affix them.
