Global Annoucements / Down time
March 13, 2013, 01:06:20 AM
The entire website went down due to an issue with the hosting. The site is now temporarily on a VPS plan, but I will most likely switch hosting companies here in a couple of days. This may result in a further spat of downtime, but probably not more than a few hours at most. I'll post more when I have something definite. I will be upgrading the service so that this will not happen again.

Thanks guys. Very nice of you to say :)

It is getting close to the time for updating the library. I've made a few adjustments and added a couple new parts. I'll give it a go-over an put up the "2013" version.

One thing I'm starting to do a lot more of with my layouts: using smaller signal traces, large supply and ground traces and no grounding plane. I'm not totally sold on the effectiveness of grounding planes other than the obvious convenience. Need to read up on it some more. I know R.G. is not in favor of them so I bet he's got some science on it.

Looks great!

There's something about either the camera perspective or fStop on that gut shot that makes all the proportions look slightly odd. Like the battery is way too big and other parts are just the wrong dimensions.

Maybe I need to lay off the caffeine!

Super etch and demo!

Regarding the Shimmer: sounds like you have a component shorting to ground. If you are only getting one repeat it makes sense that the signal is getting killed off...you can still get a repeat by having the Path set to skip the filtering. Fortunately, the Shimmer is only four components so it should not be hard to track down.

Outstanding! Love the texture paint and faceplate.

No it is not terribly dark by design. The filtering is pretty much the same as the Sea Urchin/DBD. So, you need to check those resistors and caps to make sure you have the right values. Particularly R24 and R13. Wrong values there would darken it up.

Noise is simply due to the PT2399 and nothing more most likely. Where did you get yours from and are they all branded the same?

There is DC on the pots by design so that is not the issue. The scratchiness most likely comes from a decoupler going faulty or something wrong with the Vb supply.

What kind of voltages are you reading on the IC, Vb, 9v, transistors, etc? That may help us track it down.

The Hollis Zombie is great sounding...but I have never been able to get rid of the LFO noise. I've tried a couple times too; with different mods and tweaks.

I second the Little Angel for simplicity. I have my own "baby build" chorus I'm trying to finalize but it's a ways off.

The DM-2 delays are very percussive sounding in their repeats and have more mid-range content, IMO. The DMM is darker and more aggressive. The modulation between the two, if comparing the Aquaboy and Dirtbag, is quite different. The DMM modulation is narrow in range but very musical. The new Aquaboy is a more fully featured modulation capable of moderate and extreme settings...probably more than you would ever want.

The cost of building the Aquaboy is probably slightly less because it uses less capacitors, but we are talking maybe a couple bucks worth.

I don't have a favorite---they both sound great for what they are. With the Aquaboy you have a slight advantage in that you can tweak the filtering more easily if you want. With the Dirtbag, you can lower the filtering caps a little but not much because the clock creeps in really fast.

Like Jacob said, listen to some demos of the classic DM-2 and DMM to get an idea of their character.

There are a couple of changes. I'll get that doc finished and up today.

I also got the revision for the Hipster and Egghead added to the existing project docs. The changes are very very minor.

General Questions / Re: ZPSDX with MLCCs

You were probably hearing a sort of out of phase sound with it like that.

Anyway, changing the Feedback behavior is easy-- just increase R41. Socketing would be a good idea. I would try 10k or 12k.

The different modes have slightly different output levels so some will go into feedback sooner. Also, having the Path switch engaged may also make it go into feedback sooner. R41 is the easiest way to balance it out to your liking.

Based on what I've seen happening with Domestic and International shipments over the last few weeks (after the new rates went into effect) I've made the following adjustments to shipping costs. The shipping rates are also now based on the total order amount, rather than the number of PCBs ordered.

----------------------------------------------------

U.S.A. Rates (1st Class)
Order Amount    Shipping
$0.01 - 49.99    $2.00
$50 - 99.99    $2.50
$ 100 or more    $3.00
Domestic orders of $ 100 or more will be upgraded to Priority at no additional cost.

International Rates
Order Amount    Shipping
$0.01 - 49.99    $3.00 ("Flats")
$50 - 99.99    $8.00 (1st Class)
$ 100 or more    $24 (Priority)
Priority shipping is required for Int'l orders of $100 or more. Transit time is 6-10 business days and tracking is included. Flats and 1st Class generally take 2-3 weeks and does not include tracking.

----------------------------------------------------

Most international customers do not order $100 or more (well over 90% of these orders are under $100) so I think this will have a very small effect. You can always break a larger order into two smaller ones to have them shipped separately under the Flats or 1st Class rates. Just remember that Priority is the ONLY option that provides tracking for International orders. I think this is a necessary step for the very large orders I get from time to time...it's just not worth leaving $100 worth of product to the mercy of Customs all over the world.

General Questions / Re: Can I use MN3008 in Aquaboy?

The differences between the different chips are more apparent during longer delays. 150ms lies somewhere between slapback and short delay so I don't think you will hear a huge difference between them.
