The setup I've outlined would control all the boards at the same time, but I'd use a rotary switch to control which one of the three boards is in the signal path.

For the most part, the things on the board I need to control act as potential dividers and not simple variable resistors. If one of the controls happens to need a simple variable resistor, then that's a LOT easier to set up.

The only schematic I've found that seems to do what I want is the Rock n' Control. I don't know how to get a better setup using photo  diodes/transistors, but I'll look at anything to somehow do this more simply with fewer components.

General Questions / Use optocouplers to make a 9-gang pot?
September 09, 2011, 04:24:37 AM
I posted a question about this on DIYstomp, but I thought I'd put it to you guys, too.

I'm planning a big project where I need to control 3-4 boards with the same 3 pots.

After a lot of research, I've discovered there's not going to be an easy answer to this, especially since I wan't to keep it analog.

The best idea I've come up with so far is to use each pot in a voltage line to control a series of circuits with octocouplers. Similar to what TGD did with his Rock 'n Control: http://tech.thetonegod.com/rockncontrol/rock.html

My thought is that if I daisychain a series of Rock n' Controls I can create a virtual 9-gang pot.

Does this have a shot of working or am I nuts?

Also, anyone have an opinion on these cheapie Octos?

Sure, I could easily make my own but ... 99 cents!

Thank you guys, thank you so much for the kind words.
I'm loving this pedal too, even if I have to admit that with the stock cap value it sounded less interesting to me, but now it sounds more "balanced" less muddy and less fuzzy, especially in the low registers.

jubal81, thank you.
Yes, the riff came up while playing with the pedal after the mod, so I decided to record it... and make the demo.

Just went back and listened to it again. I used to love the heavy blues rock aka (stoner rock); bands like Orange Goblin, Mystic Krewe, Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Nebula, etc. I haven't listened to or played that type stuff in years, but your riff there is gonna make me dig out some old albums  ;D
I love it when a new piece of gear instantly inspires you to be creative.

i just put in an order for prototypes of the relay and the EQ.  if they work when I verify them, I will have a few extra, before placing a large quantity order.

Out of curiosity, which fab house do you use?

With all this talk of board-mounted pots, what tips or tricks are there to getting the drilling spot on?

Very slick build! I especially like the ribbon cable. Got a link for ordering some?

Nice, thanks for clearing that up.
I'm glad you're working this up. I foresee buying a ton of these.

What would be the best way to add the LED indicator?

Also, is this the right type of relay:

Ah, good points.
Now that I think about it some more, with the board mounted on the side of the enclosure, it could free up a decent amount of space, too.

Not sure if you've already sent of to prototyper, but I thought of something else that might be useful.
This might be tough looking at the current layout, but being able to use a PCB mounted switch would be pretty neat. There'd be no worries about mounting the board somewhere.

This kit from Weber looks pretty interesting:

Nevermind dropped when I was  a freshman in high school. I HATED hair metal, so before that all I listened to was pretty much just ZZ Top and Aerosmith. Growing up in the rural mountains of N.C., Nevermind clued me in that there were bands still making great music, just under the radar a bit.
Blind Melon wasn't under the radar, but it was the only cassette I had to buy three times because I played it so much the tape stretched and I was getting slower, detuned Blind Melon.

I'm discontinuing the Cosmo because it's a Skreddy clone and the Spackler because I'm replacing it with a full frequency boost I designed (and runs off 36v!).
As soon as I read that I heard the Tim Allen 'more power' grunt echoing in my brain. We gonna need a bandolier of backup 12ax7s when we can't resist turning it up to 11?

Great news. Any recommendation on what footswitch (brand/style/make, etc) to use with it?

I think the biggest things for me are how it performs. IE: signal doesn't cut out or cause an audible pop when switched, switches consistently with different shorting durations and frequencies. It would also be nice it it would default to bypassed when the power source is removed. Low parts cost would be a plus too. :)

+1 I'm more worried about function than features. As long as it functions 100 percent of the time I
Good, although a led would be nice.

My sentiments exactly. Really looking forward to this for a big project I have in mind.
