MDMA
Wampler Ecstasy, now the Euphoria - I guess someone clued him in and he changed the name. ;D

Layout from tagboardfx.

The Expandratron.
I've posted one of these before, but this one is built to all the mods outlined in the Codtone Expandra build doc. While I was doing this TNBlueshawk and I noticed there is a small omission in the "stomp into forbidden mode" mod, which I've corrected. If you are building one with that mod please download the revised build doc from Here. (Still got boards too!)

3 knob Shoot the Moon, shape control on a switch.
My layout.

The D*A*M GB-83, easy fit in a 1590A.
Etch is of an Australian March Fly, Tabanidae (aka Horse Fly)- life size!
These ones drink blood!... really, Oz fearers, it's just a little sting... ;)

I added 22K to the 330K for a hotter Q1 bias-  My layout:

Please use it- all I ask is that you post your finished build here.  ;)

Though etching really is binary, I'm using and old school dot matrix (like old newspaper pics used to be) to create the illusion of greys...

Here's a buffer for One in, Four outs.
It's spanky clean and sounds very nice. It's based on a design I found in the "1 in 3 out" thread at BYOC, but I had to add an extra IC for 4 outs. (I used a TL074 & T071)

The artist in question is locally known as "Pirate Steve" (yes, like in Dodgeball...), hence the Jolly Roger.

And the layout, should you too wish to haul 4 amps to every gig too... :-\

My modded Expandra.
*Switchable cippers (symetric/asymetric)
*'Bite' control for smooth darker grit or a brighter more aggressive sound.
*three-way switch for crunch/overdrive/distortion modes.
*Stomp switch for 'Forbidden' mode with a dual color led.

Red led for 'Forbidden' mode.

All these mods and a couple more are included in the build doc.
I've got the H11F3's and a roll of PC419's, just waiting on delivery of the boards now. Stay tuned. ;)

Found a use for my Union Jack Wire.

Codtone Expandra (original Bixonic Expandora)
This is my prototype board, all built, tested, rocked and boxed. :D
It's a great sounding od/distortion with Crunch, Overdrive, Distortion and "Forbidden" modes.
It has a wonderfull touch sensitivity thanks to a rare and unusual opto-fet arangement that controls the gain with pick attack.

The original opto fet, a surfacemount PC914, are obsolete and have become difficult to track down, this board ingeniously (thanks CJ!) allows the use of a surface mount PC914 or a DIP 6 H11Fx instead. 8)
I have tracked down a good source for both of these componants, and will be doing a run of boards for the DIY crew.  Board purchase will include an IC. As you can see, they're also small enough to fit a 1590B or a tuna tin if you want an authentic looking enclosure.

The etch is of Pandora, a myth that intrigues me for what it says about human curiosity...and, of course... women.
I'm hoping there'll be a few of you curious enough to try this build out.

CJ's Inline 8/Grindcustoms Octane, based on the Marshal Gov'nor.
I'm giving this pedal away, details at the codtone facebook page
I've modded it to be both a bit crunchier and fatter to suit the de-tuning crowd.

Etch has eight legs, so it made sense to me.

Rauldukes Prince Albert

BYOC Overdrive built to Boiling Point specs, with a charge pump for 18v operation.

The "Codroach" CJ's Astroclone, an Astrotone/Sam Ash fuzz clone with tweeks.

Pork Barrel (CE 2)

CJ's Pit Fighter with many Mods.

Had a lot of fun with this, has switches for boost/od/fuzstortion and 3 way clippers.

Non-bean stuff...

Medusa Fuzz
A PNP Ge Fuzz ,(has a voltage inverter on the back of the board) Second stomp activates a clean blend mixed in with the middle knob.
Has a tri-color led. Red for on, which changes to blue with the blend activated. I used a dual gang pot for the blend, as the knob is turned the led changes from blue to green at fully cw.

Maestro Filter, Sample & Hold.

Looking forward to Brian's take on this effect- it took me four builds to get one to work. Great fun to play though!

Distortion +

Added a switch for some asymetric clipping options.

BYOC Phaser Royal

Ninja has light-up eyes.  ;D

Warhead.

and a Weener Wah.
Has adjustable Q, a switchable buffer and a 'dirty' boost

This one goes to James Cruickshank (Cruel Sea, Tex Perkins)
He gave me the shell and is stoked with it!

Nautilus.
Love this thing. Tri-color led for the hi/band/low modes. Couldn't wait to play it, heaps of fun.

Guts are a mess, partly because I put it together as fast as possible, and partly because I then spent three days trouble shooting the various errors caused by rushing the build .  ::)

The final issue was the 390ohm resistors in my 390K drawer. Once I found those I knew what the problem had been with...

My second Kingslayer.
I can't say enough good things about this circuit. My first one was immediately apropriated by a friend, so I built this one. Drove me nuts for a couple of days, then sat on my desk for weeks taunting me until I had my revelation with the Nautilus.

Finally, an Optical Comp and B-Blender combo. (non-bean)

Build Reports / "Lord Parkour" Fat Pantses
November 28, 2012, 01:14:58 PM
Here's a Madbean Fat Pants v2, an awesome sounding boost .
I built it for a friend, who is gifting it to his friend "Lord Parkour", hence the portrait. A bit of a tricky etch as the pic he suplied me was pretty murky and lacking in contrast, but it came out ok.
At least I got the guts quite neat.
As I've mentioned, it's a terrific sounding pedal, and like all Madbean projects, beautifully documented,  I highly recommend this one.

Also, if you've built the first version, it's not too hard to retrofit the buffer section from the second version, and well worth the trouble. Here's my v1, moded to v2 specs.

The guts with the vero buffer tucked in at the top:

I used the extra 17v out to power the satelite board.

If you want to go all the way, change the resistors and pot at the output and the conversion is complete. ;D

Build Reports / Ming Slayer
November 05, 2012, 07:20:18 AM

Here's my Ming Slayer, the marvelous Kingslayer, IMHO an even better mousetrap.

It's definatly a bit more versitile with the switchable feedback loop clipping (I went with 3 asymetric Bat41) and three way hard clippers (leds/none/1N34A) Wired it buffered for a change too.

The Pork Barrel Chorus.
I made a small mod for a little extra speed (1M rate pot & R35 is 330K)

#75
I've always loved multi-tap delay so this seemed like a good idea.
It's CJ's TweakTone and MB's Sea Urchin housed together.
They're quite similar, but different enough to pair really well.

I used a 70K pot on the TT to get a little extra delay time, other than that they're stock.
I can get some luxurious swells of echo when they're both on. :D

And a little Demo.

Build Reports / Moebius Mudbunny
July 25, 2012, 11:46:04 AM
I was asked to put together something a little bit interesting, based on a Muff, so I made this.
The Moebius Muff.

I etched a Mudbunny board and built it to Creamy Dreamer specs with BC549C trannys.

Second stomp switches on the Regerative Feedback Loop. It's my take on the Howl of Flaming Death Mod which includes an externally mounted LDR and produces wild, but tunable, self-oscillation. LDR is mounted in a 3mm bezel.

Escher etch of Ants crawling around a Moebius Strip, which is an incredible single sided object with some fascinating properties...google and build one if you haven't heard of it!

And a little Demo:

Build Reports / Quadrovibe II
May 29, 2012, 12:50:22 AM
I love building these things. Nothing like the warm throbbing glow of a real light bulb.
The Quadrovibe is real old skool, runs at 18v and has a unique sound.
I managed to get everything in with the board facing the right way up this time.

#78
Slow Loris and a Clean Blend (the vero add-on.)
I really like to use a rat with my archtop when I do jazz gigs, but like to be able to blend some clean back in help preserve some clarity and stop the thing from howling too much.
I used the simple Buff and Blend circuit from Beavis, Clipping options are leds, none and a pair of BS170 configured as clippers. (my favorite)

Bendrive (Serendipity)

It has the AD712 in it, I tried it with a TL072 (one fith the price) just to see if I could hear a difference...and, (suprising myself) thought I could.

Here's how it might look if you've been eating mushrooms.

The Quarovibe
Sounds silky smooth.

I had to put the board face down to fit it in the 1590B, which is ok, just makes it a bit fiddly to adjust the trimmers.

Here's an assembly pic.
