Open Discussion / Re: TV Series - What Are You Watching?
February 25, 2014, 09:23:58 PM
Parenthood was ok, but we actually had all those characters in our family, so while the wife was saying "it's so realistic and well written", I was saying "We have all those people here - the off the rails daughter, the son with aspbergers, the failed musician who wants to run a recording studio, the grumpy father in law - I don't need to watch this!"

Get into:
- Game On (3 seasons, long gone Brit series about some housemates - a looser, an agrophobic, and a nympho)
- Being Human (watch the Brit version.  The US version is like watching the auditions)
- Misfits (Brit series.  Rough as guts in terms of the content sometimes, but the first 2 seasons are great.  Loses a bit without Nathan and "Barry" in the later seasons)
- Lie to Me
- Metal Evolution
- Metalopocalypse
- Grand Designs.

I was going to post something similar.  I got my BOMs for a Pork Barrel filled in at the local Jaycar, but they couldn't do the 8n2 caps, and replaced them with 10n.

How's that going to work out (I doubt it'll do anything much at all)?  Are we looking at fire and brimstone coming down from the skies? Rivers and seas boiling? Forty years of darkness? Earthquakes, volcanoes..The dead rising from the grave? Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!???

It goes without saying that you need an SHO in the signal chain before it.  You could label the boost knob as "viagra"

Can't say I know too much about USB stuff these days (I pawned my firewire interface a few years ago), but I'm thinking the new focusrite stuff looks pretty good.

I was planning on hooking up the pots and maybe rocking a few populated veros, but I dunno if I can be bothered.

I love doing every part of pedal building up to the actual boxing itself.  That gives me the shits.

I often look things up on google, have a thought about something else, get distracted by what I was googling initially, and seconds I can't remember what it was that I thought about looking up.  Drives me nuts.

I don't have the inclination to sit down and commit to watching TV.  I'd rather read, or play something on the PC.

Not much of a secret, but I hate facebook and smartphones.

Use a really high grade of wet/dry, and use a cut/polish compound to finish.  It'll go like glass if done properly.

Quoteit's sort of a "if you build it, they will come" philosophy with me. If I need anything, I'll buy it. If i don't, I'll build it.

Yeah, i can really relate to this.  I have two multis, that need boxing that will make life pretty good in terms of setup, but I don't really hook up the electric so much that I'm going to die if I don't finish them, so they're crusing along.  I just redid the artwork and box layout for one last night.

I also have two ODs (a ts808 off sabrotone, successfully rocked, and a Deadringer that needs rocking) that need boxing, and I just got the parts for another vero SHO and a Clark Gainster.  This is on top of a Sea Urchin that's also waiting to be boxed.  But there's no hurry because I already have retail pedals on the pedalboard that do the same in the meantime.

QuoteAnd yes, all the fun is in the building and the sense of accomplishment at the end.

QuoteBecause I can.

I think these sum it up nicely though.  If I ever finally finish anything mentioned here, it'll be pretty cool.

QuoteIm just replacing the words "guitar center" with "billy hydes" and it all makes sense
Well, we don't have to worry about that any more, eh?

Sometimes, I go nuts and get all ambitious with what I'd like to build, because I think I'd like to have a box that does x, something that does Y, and then I see something like the Zoom G3x and go "Well, f**k it all, because thing does everything I want, and I can probably use my outboard stuff with it too, for a reasonable amount of money with no time wasted".

http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/g3

Then I see a cheaparse unit like this and think "well, bugger me, it's all right there, nearly.  Wonder if I could mod that up or gut it, or whatever.  If the delay and chorus are ok, I'd probably be set".

http://www.pyleaudio.com/sku/PPDLA1/Super-Guitar-Multi-Effect-Pedal-With-Overdrive,-Distortion,-Chorus,-And-Digital-Delay-

And then, I see about the only review on the web that I can find, and I think "Nah, I can do better.  Even if I can't, it'll still be better"

QuoteVery cool guitar mate. I'd swap out the black hardware though. did you build that one?

QuoteWilly what guitar is that? I usually dislike that sort of thing but this one is strangely appealing! :-)

Lol, now you guys have started me off:

It's a custom Agile that I had built when Rondomusic were doing full customs every now and again.  The custom orders they do now are nothing like what it was when I got this thing.  In a nutshell:

- mahogany body with 3/4inch quilted maple top.
- black binding (I took this off the final order but it came with it anyway)
- 24 fret maple set neck, with their "uniform" profile, ~23mm at the nut and heel.  I specified that I wanted the 24th fret to be where the fretboard meets the body, and that's what I got.
- The green is a color swatch I emailed through.
- I chose the 59/JB combo in the quote but adjusted it to alnico5 pickups to bring the cost down to avoid AU import tax (GST), but it arrived with the Duncans, which I didn't realise until I went to swap the pickups out.  I put a tonezone in the bridge instead anyway.  So now I have a chrome covered PU in the neck, and a bare black one in the bridge.
- The body is Agile's AD shape, with their Hawker headstock shape.

It was a fair gamble given that it was ordered from AU, built in Korea (or Taiwan), shipped to the US, sent to AU, and I've never played an Agile before.  But, given the price, inc shipping and case..... I was happy to take the risk.  Took about 6 months to arrive.  Needed a fret dress after a couple of months, and the pickup selector switch is a bit dicky when trying to select the neck PU, but overall  ;D ;D ;D ;D

The combo of HT-Dual and this guitar just sustains forever, like strum a chord, it goes "AAHHHHH", you go away and have a bite, come back and it's still going "AAAAHHHH".

QuoteMore of a maxim: reduce the gain by 15-20% from where you think it sounds good for recording and double track.
QFT.  I drop the gain even more than that sometimes.

Well, I teach guitar 8 hours a day for a living, so if anything, playing guitar impacts on pedal building time.

Seriously, I build pedals when I get a chance, but I'm too busy teaching E, A, and D to 6 year old kids to really want to sit down and improve my playing.  Need to get into a band or two.  Noodlely jam sessions don't do it for me, need more focus than that.

Pedalwise, got three multis to finish, one for bass (compressor, fuzz, eq), one for the guitar (delay, chorus, dirt, boost), and my  amp-in-a-box (buffer, vol, eq, cabsim, master vol) to go on the pedalbord.  I'll never get time to do those.
