General Questions / DI Outputs on SludgeHammer
May 30, 2022, 07:32:01 PM
I was hoping to hear from some bassists here.  I remember back in the day the sound guy would sometimes plug in a DI box in front of my amp and take a direct signal into the board.  I always thought it would be cool to have the SansAmp and have the DI already there.  My plan was to build the SludgeHammer with an XLR DI.  However, I just checked my amp and I realized that it has an XLR DI with pre/post switch.  Is there any reason to add the DI (TRS or XLR) to the SludgeHammer now?

Build Reports / PFUK - Ram's Head Muff
May 27, 2022, 04:29:21 PM
During my PFUK auction two bidders were going at it.  Half way through they both agreed to donate $500 even if they lost.  I thought that was super cool, so, I decided to build this pedal for the loosing bidder as a gift.

It's a Muff and it is big!  I used MBs Ram's Head values with SE4010s.  The Hfe on these were all over 400.  So, this is mean and super loud!  I think unity gain is about 9 o'clock.  ;D  The art says Ram's Head in Ukrainian (Thanks Benny_P for the translation!).  Also the board is a PPCB that I had received as part of a prize from Fig (So, thanks Fig!). I  wanted it to look vintage, so, I polished a bare enclosure without sanding.  I think it came out really cool.

Build Reports / Ibanez BC-9 Bi-Chorus
May 22, 2022, 03:11:23 PM
I friend of mine asked me to make an Ibanez BC9 for him.  When I started looking around, I was surprised that there wasn't a whole lot of information and nobody had ever done a DIY version of this circuit.  Luckily, Aentons has the original unit and was super awesome enough to send me a bunch of pictures and answer questions (thanks Aentons!).

The BC9 is a CS9 with an extra LFO.  On my version I added a vibrato (dry-cut) mod.  The controls on the B side are for the standard CS9 LFO and the controls on the A side are for the second, faster LFO.

I think the layout came out great. I finally have a good system now.  I started with the art file and then took the drill template into KiCad to start the layout.  I also placed the all the jacks and footswitch in KiCad.  So, I didn't end up with any surprises this time.  8)

Build Reports / PFUKR250
May 01, 2022, 12:52:22 PM
Here's my contribution for the upcoming DOD 250 sale to raise funds for Ukraine relief charities.  It's a gray spec (whatever that is) 250 with a couple of different clipping options.  I have symmetrical BAT 46s for a super compressed sound and a pair of 2N7000 MOSFETs for a softer clipping option.  This thing sounds amazing, I try to get a demo clip together later today.

Thanks to David (storyboardist) for donating the PCBs  8)

Has anybody done extensive experimenting with different clipping diodes in the 250+ circuit?  Any recommendations?

General Questions / Single vs Double Op-Amp
April 05, 2022, 09:24:09 PM
I'm looking Ibanez chorus schematics.  For the gate part of the circuit in some versions they use a single op-amp (UA741) and in later versions only one op-amp from a dual op-amp package (4558).  Made me wonder why single op-amp packages even exist ;D?    Are there any instances when a single op-amp package has an advantage?

Finished this up last night.  Now I just have to figure out how Instagram works and how you make a profile with no words?!?  ;D

I'm working on a PT2399 project, the layout is pretty dense.  I was looking over the schematic and it seems to me that I can get rid of C24, C25, C36, and C37 since they are tied to the +5V net and C5 and C8 are already handling the filtering.  I just wanted to get some other opinions, in case I'm missing something.  Any help would be much appreciated  8)

General Questions / JFET Buffer Question
March 12, 2022, 09:09:15 PM
I'm working on a new delay pedal based on Brian's DeathKlaw (link: https://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/archives/Delay/Deathklaw.zip).  The ghost switch takes signal from the first of two PT2399s in series and passes it through a JFET buffer before passing it back into the signal to double the repeats.  The build doc says the volume is lower on the ghost repeat.  I'm having trouble seeing how the buffer values lower the volume.  Is the drop in volume all from the 100R resistor at R15?

Build Reports / DC Echo
March 06, 2022, 06:21:34 PM
Finally got this one figured out  8) Lot's of great builds of this one, sold me.  The circuit doesn't disappoint.  I set the gains with the scope originally, which didn't work out for me.  I end up using Betty Wont's method -> I adjusted the gains in short and long mode so that I got infinite repeats at the last part of the Repeat pot rotation. This worked.

The enclosure is no film on a seafoam green 1590XX I bought from Mammoth like 5 years ago  ;D  I've been saving it for something special.

Build Reports / Dyna Comp (Aion Aurora)
March 06, 2022, 12:47:21 PM
I built a few of these for friends and I really dug them, so, I made this one for myself  8)  I'm not a fan of subtle effects, so, this is the only compressor I've ever really gotten into.  The little strip board is to move the few components off of the Aion breakout board, so, I could add the Softie.  If there is a Softie update in the future, I think it would be cool to move the DC2 pads after the protection diode and filtering caps.

Enclosure is no-film on a Tayda powder coat.  I was worried that the dark gray would be too dark, but it came out great.   The graphics are supposed to be the evolution of the Sagan inspired pedals I've made.  I picture the Sagan ones being released 80-84  and my latest coming out 87-89  ::)

I made a PedalPCB VB-2 in the same style and my DC-Echo, when I get it working  :P

Just a heads up.  I've had two builds now where I get everything boxed up and the the 9V power barrel doesn't fit into the jack!  I just went through my stash and found 5 jacks out of ~15 that are too small to accept my DC adaptors and 1 that was way too big.  I'm checking them before instal from now on.

The jacks I'm talking about are the innie 2.1mm power jacks (SKU A-2237).  I checked all my outies and they are fine.

General Questions / Modulation Section Schematic Help
February 17, 2022, 01:08:41 PM
This is the modulation section from Fairfield Circuitry Shallow Water.  The circuit produces a subtle effect, so, I'd like to increase the amplitude of the modulation signal and give it more range.  I'm in a little over my head here, so I was hoping someone could take a look and see if I'm understanding things correctly.

The Randomizer is an Attiny chip producing a random square signal.  I'm interpreting the next steps as a unity gain buffer followed by an integrator.  I'm confused about the set-up of the slew control and whether or not changing any of the values of the integrating op-amp will affect the gain.   What I'm thinking about at the moment is bending out leg 2 of the MCP602 and connecting it to R64 via a resistor to create an inverting amplifier from the buffer.

I'd love to hear what some more skilled people think.  8)

So, I've been working on finalizing one of Allan's No Name Flange PCB sets.  This build has been a white whale for me.  I got the set as a X-mas PIF in 2018/19!

I was wondering if anyone who has built this one or the DeadendFX version actually used all of the extra input/output jacks?  Originally, I was thinking about pairing down everything to just a mono in and out, but now I'm leaning towards a stereo version.  The FX loop for this set requires a mod that I don't think I want to get into because it might set me back another year  ;D

Love to hear what you think.

Build Reports / VFE Dragon Hound
January 16, 2022, 04:00:48 PM
Dragon Hound made me think of Falkor from the Never Ending Story and I couldn't envision any other graphic.  It came out more cute than I would have preferred, but I'm happy with it ;D  I borrowed the all white aesthetic from EBK's 2020 BOTY.  I think it looks super classy.

Interesting drive that I'm looking forward to spending more time with.

After the recent thread about the Maestro, I decided to finish up a Stagefright board I've been hanging onto.

There is a slight background LFO noise that is audible when the pedal is engaged.  The top mount jacks were not suggested and in retrospect having the input jack right over the LFO seems like a bad idea.  However, moving the input wire doesn't seem to change the behavior and the trim pot can be dialed in to minimize the noise.

I was wondering if any of you have built this and have similar faint background noise? I was contemplating moving the jacks to there suggested side position but I am reluctant to ruin the enclosure because it came out great. Would love to know if the sound is normal.

I'm working on Aion's layout of the CB30 this weekend. The circuit has some weird features that I haven't ever encountered. Does anyone know what's going on with the (C11,C9), (C19, C18), (C24, C23) pairs? They look like a BP electro workaround but having the audio coming out of the middle of the two is something I've never seen.

Open Discussion / 2N5457 MMBF5457 Uses Other Than Pedals
December 06, 2021, 11:50:37 AM
For some of you EE professionals out there.  I was wondering if the 5457 JFETs are widely used in other industries?  Basically, are the shortage we're seeing now a temporary supply-chain issue or are these going to be rare from now on.

Open Discussion / Best PT2399 Delay Modulation??
November 23, 2021, 12:40:20 PM
I'm starting to work on a new 2399 delay circuit design.  I've been over a lot of different modulation options in different MB circuits, both optical and op-amp based.  I was just wondering if any of you have an opinion for which modulation circuit is best suited to a 2399 style delay and why?  This project is going to be in a 1590XX, so, parts count is not a consideration.   However, given the difficulty sourcing things recently, I'd probably like to avoid rare parts. Let me know hat you think!  8)
