I have a project I'm working on and would like to have some 1/2 inch knobs that look like devil horns.  My plan is to try some Fimo clay, but I thought maybe some 3D printed ones would look more professional.   If anyone can help out I can offer payment or some sort of trade.  Let me know.

Build Reports / CS9 Chorus Two Ways
September 05, 2021, 07:03:08 PM
I've been working on this layout for awhile now.  It's a CS9 chorus adapted from Diablochris' Agua Net.  CS9 is my all-time favorite chorus and I don't have one any more (lost two to band mates over the years  >:().  Thanks to everyone that helped with advice to finish this up!

I added a blend pot from the PorkBarrel.   It also has a LAG control to adjust the clock frequency manually (similar to the SPACE control on the EQD Julia). I also added a volume trim for the output.  The idea was that you could build it stock with two knobs or go full feature.  The stock circuit sounds awesome, I love it.

I'm still working out one last bug with the full feature version.  It has a slight volume drop when the pedal is engaged.  I'm guessing the problem is with the blend pot because there is a volume boost when it is removed in the classic version.  I tested a lot of values in the blend pot and settled on 50kB.  This gave the smoothest transition form wet to dry.  However, math wise a 100kB would be closer to the original fixed values.  If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate some advice, the schematic is attached.

EDIT: Replacing the BLEND pot with 250kB resolves the volume drop.  Sounds incredible!

Enclosure treatment is no-film on a Tayda powder coat for the classic and polished metal for the full feature version.  The kanjis on the Space Chorus are the google translation of "super beautiful wave device"  ;D I'm not sure what the kanjis on the skull picture say  ::)

General Questions / Increasing LFO Speed
September 04, 2021, 09:52:04 PM
I wanted to increase the speed of the LFO in a chorus circuit.  What can I change to accomplish this?  This is the circuit I'm working with (Agua Net Chorus).  The faster mod isn't working, I dropped the mod value to 100 pF and still no change from stock. I'm okay to forget about the mod, but I'd like to change a value and squeeze a faster max rate.

Open Discussion / Transistor Tester Easter Egg
August 28, 2021, 05:07:41 PM
I bought a transistor tester on Amazon and had a chance to use it last night.  When I put the battery in I saw the Autobot sticker.  I  thought that was random.  Then I powered it on  ;D ;D

General Questions / Ibanez CS9 Clock Frequency
August 09, 2021, 10:21:39 AM
I was searching the interwebz for the clock frequency on the Ibanez CS9, but I haven't found anything.  Does anyone know what the factory setting is?  Or does anyone have an original unit that they could measure? I had two, myself, but they've been lost to bad band members over the years  :P  I was planning to pick another one up, but they're pretty pricy right now in the used market.

General Questions / Ibanez CS9 Lag Control Help
July 31, 2021, 03:56:35 PM
I'm working on a layout for a CS9 with Walrus Audio Julia style controls.  I believed the lag control was just a 250k pot substituted for the 220k resistor after the depth pot and before Q5.  However, I looked at the Pedal PCB build docs, which now has a schematic, and it is something completely different.  I want to implement this set up in the CS9 circuit but I'm not sure how to alter the values. I need some help from the Jedis!  Advice would be much appreciated.  8)

General Questions / Pork Barrel Blend Control
July 27, 2021, 06:08:36 PM
Can anyone give me a quick run down of how the blend control on the PB is working?  It seems like it is setting the wet and dry signals at different bias voltages depending on where the pot is set.  But how that creates the mix of the two is a mystery to me.

Build Reports / Deathklaw with Modulation
July 25, 2021, 04:29:59 PM
It's been a personal goal of mine to do my own PCB layout.  This is the my first and I'm pretty pumped. It works and sounds pretty awesome.  8) Thanks to Dan Shutone for all his advice.

Circuit is Bean's Deathklaw with an added modulation section and a slam switch.  I'm scheming on a project that will have 6-8 PT2399s and I wanted to get some experience laying out the SMD packages.  Unfortunately, I didn't know that 2399s have 3 packages.  This SMD footprint is pretty big, I don't see a big advantage in space saving.  Also, I misunderstood the ghost control on the original DeathKlaw, I wish I had added that in.

The enclosure is a Tayda UV print.  This pedal is a gift for a friend.  The image is a picture I took of him for a college photography class.  I used an overhead projector to cast the PCB trace on his face.  At the time, I did't even know that's what is was.  ;D

Open Discussion / Audio Quality of Different Caps
June 21, 2021, 05:54:37 PM
I ran across this TI document about different cap materials and thought it was pretty informative.  The part about biasing an electro cap was something I never considered but seems pretty obvious after reading it.

General Questions / PT2399 Modulation LDR
June 04, 2021, 09:17:35 PM
I'm working on a PT2399 delay layout. I was wondering, what is the advantage to adding an LDR to the modulation circuit?  The Blueprint and Dirtbaby skip it, but most others have an one.  Is there an advantage?

General Questions / Anybody try Tayda Brand Pots?

I've tried their house brand mini SPDT and DPDT toggle switches, which seem fine.  Wondering about their pots.

Build Reports / VFE Old School
April 10, 2021, 01:56:45 PM
Here is another build I needed after watching Dan's VFE Friday series.  ;D

The DC jack was a pain to get in there and I had to file down the lip of the lid to get it closed.  Nice sounding trem  8)

Open Discussion / Tayda UV Printing Results
April 10, 2021, 01:48:07 PM
Here is some UV printed enclosures I got from Tayda.  They came out really nice.  I took some photos outside to try and capture the gloss and embossing.

The Bumblebee is black print with the extra gloss layer.  The Tremolo is double pass white print with an emboss layer.

This photo is to compare my usual no-film decal to the UV print.  I did this Sharkfin awhile back, similar graphic.

After drilling

Here's the finished pedals.  You can see that the embossing doesn't work well on small details.  The "Tremelo" logo looks great and it's three demential when you run your finger over it, but the small text looks sloppy.  I'll skip embossing small stuff next time.

The gloss layer on the Bumblebee looks great.  I can't see any inconsistencies, but the enclosure is glossy too, so, probably need to test on a matte enclosure to know for sure.

Someone posted about wanting a matte black enclosure with glossy black labels.  I think that would be possible with this service.

Build Reports / VFE Mobius Strip
March 29, 2021, 01:01:35 PM
This will be the first of a few builds that Dan sold me on with his VFE Friday series  ;D

This is the tightest of all the VFE build I've done.  It takes a lot of planning to get everything together without too much melting of parts.  I had to solder in one pin of each pot, then take it apart and solder them from the back.  Also, I had to notch out the lid to make space for the electros on the side, but I got it all crammed in there  ;D

Soudwise, I was hoping to be able to get rhythmic delays, like from the Sagan.  However, it's tricky to set the times just right.  I think this one is it's own thing. I'm looking forward to messing around with it some more.

Enclosure is no-film on a Tayda powder coat.  I used some fancy Small Bear knobs including the 9mm slide on covers for the plastic shaft pots.

Anybody know if there is a pdf of this around? According to the interweb, it's been unavailable for awhile now.

I've seen a few builds using these.  Can anyone recommend a good source?

Build Reports / Bass Machine - Junk Trunk Gas Tank Combo
February 07, 2021, 04:56:27 PM
I've been wanting to use a powder coated 1590XX ever since Tayda started offering them.  Here is a combo of MB's Junk Trunk and Gas Tank.  I wanted these together to skip the 1/8 inch connection between the fuzz and the filter.

The fuzz sounds cool.  The filter is a bit finicky, but there are some sweet spots.  Together they give you some synthy goodness.

Continuing with my Sagan Delay themed pedals:

https://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=32333.0

This is my Space Chorus.  It's a Pedal PCB Caesar, which is a copy of the Walrus Audio Julia.  It's super cool.  The build docs don't have a schematic.  I'm curious to see how the delay lag (Space control) is implemented.  I think it would be cool to mod some other chorus circuits with this, like the Small Clone.  Biasing the 3207 looked weird on the scope (no position on the trimmer gives anything close to a symmetric waveform on the output), but it sounds great.  That's been messing with me, maybe an artifact of the delay pot?

Enclosure is no film on polished metal with a 10 mm LED.  The transfer came out a bit rougher than the other two, but it looks fine in real life  ;D  I have a NE5532 in there, which I think sounds better.

The soft touch really did not want to go in there!  It took flipping some caps to the back and angling in the PCB.  The pins on the blend pot are barely poking through.
