Mods / Tube Screamer Variant Frequencies Chart
March 08, 2020, 10:26:48 AM
Here is a chart of frequencies and component values of a few TS variants including the TS9DX modes, the VFE Scream and Ice Scream flavors. I'm a big fan of the TS9DX +mode.

Without ever really thinking about it, I had always assumed that the companies that "make" their own strings actually manufacture the core and wrap wires.

They don't...

They only do the wrapping...

Open Discussion / Gibson Square pots?

Anybody have any idea what these pots are?

The article says they are in a 2019 SG Standard Tribute

What does mxr do that gives it that top end roll of that none of clones seem have?  is it cheap caps... thinner wire... I'm not sure how to explain it

I saw this on Reverb and asked for a gut shot so I thought I would share.

I remember seeing a chart somewheres on the internets a few years back but I can't seem to find it. It showed a graph for the different audio tapers for CTS, Alpha, Bourn's and I think one other. Anybody have a reference to that or anything like it?

I'm not sure if the chart I saw was referencing a certain type or size, but I'm mainly looking for 25mm guitar control pots info. I'm also interested in any custom taper details for some of these DiMarzio, Emerson types.

I gutted my SG of the Jimmy Page push/pull
setup and went back to all stock Gibson branded 300k pots with 4 wire 490r/498t set. I will eventually want to do something different with it. It may be as simple as changing to 500k or I may do something crazy and go all concentric and give each parallel coil it's own volume with hp/lp on the tones. I'm in the info gathering stage at the moment so any input helps. Thanks!

Open Discussion / Isolated Power Supplies
January 15, 2020, 12:18:28 PM
I don't want to hijack the other PSU thread, so I figured I'd start another.

I have a pedal power 2 and got curious about how the isolation actually works and looked up a pic of the inside. I was surprised to see just one large transformer. I guess I misunderstood the marketing blurb that it "isolates EVERY output" as.... there is a separate transformer for each output.

After closer inspection of their marketing, I see it says... "Pedal Power 2 PLUS uses a custom designed, ultra-low noise toroidal transformer, with separate balanced windings for every output." Which makes more sense. But, out on the interwebs, I see lots of smaller isolation transformers for audio applications and am just curious about the differences in application.

Is this just how VoodooLabs chose to implement their solution, or would there be a difference if you used a separate transformers for each output rather than of separate windings of a single one?

Open Discussion / JST connectors

Any recommendations on small JST type connectors?
I'm looking to streamline the connections on a modular multi-pedal type thing. Footswitch, Power and audio jacks stay connected to the enclosure, while the main board is interchangeable.

In a summing amplifier, it seems that most of what i've seen uses an inverting opamp configuration, but sometimes I see one that is non-inverting such as the ROG Splitter-Blend. I understand that the non-inverting "virtual earth" eliminates source interaction. Is there interaction with a non-inverting config? Just curious why or in what circumstances you would use one over the other?

Thanks

Open Discussion / VFE 3rd party manufacturer?
October 17, 2019, 02:32:20 PM
Peter from VFE mentions a couple of times in his indegogo campaign for the new pedal format and switching system that it is in preparation for a new 3rd party manufacturer.

"Parts of the funds will be used to re-design the original VFE Pedal lineup, in preparation of a re-launch of these pedals by a 3rd party in 2021."

Anybody heard anything about who it might be, just curious?

Let me preface by saying that, I like lots of options...

I've been toying with some ideas for revamping the wiring in my SG. Just wondering if anyone has ever done independent coil volumes on humbuckers, and if so, what did you think?

I have a 4 wire 490r/498t set and in the past have had them in a 4 knob, all push/pull type setup where pulling the volume knob grounded one of the coils. Pulling the tones did in/out phase and parallel/series.

I don't want to do push/pulls again since I learned the hard way that they tend to just keep on pulling out when you try to remove the knob.

I could prob get away with larger concentric pots for the coil volumes and lose the master, but I like the idea of a having a master if possible.

So... (I think) What I'd like to do is give each of the 4 coils it's own small volume control in the form of a trimmer or thumbwheel in order to balance the volumes against each other and maybe turn down the overall output (when the master is at full) and the have all the in-between, not quite split tones. I have seen this refered to as a "spin a split'. But.. it's usally only implemented for one of the coils. I'd like to do it for both coils AND keep the 2 larger stock volume controls as master volumes.

At the same time, I plan on having the option to series/parallel switch the coils as well as the 2 humbuckers. I'll likely put controls on the back cover. Anybody have any experience with anything like this?

Another thing that I'm not sure of that I want to take into consideration before I start wiring is the series wiring order of the coils and humbuckers and if that even really matters much.

General Questions / A/B switcher with remote footswitch?
September 04, 2019, 11:53:45 AM
Can anybody point me in the right direction for
a schematic to something like this?

https://www.championpedals.com/pureab+.html

Basically, I just want to switch my Vox Normal and Top Boost inputs and minimize any crosstalk noise while keeping the signal switching at the amp.

Edit: Sorry, I just saw that there is a Softie "Momentary Relay Bypass" listed as coming soon and realized that it is prob just what I need... that's good stuff

General Questions / "Warp" control blending issue
August 03, 2019, 01:18:44 PM
So I've noticed that on some of the VFE pedals  that have the variable diode blending, that the effected signal seems like it sits behind some clean signal, or the signal does not always fully go thru one side or the other like it would when using a real switch.

I did some research and these seem to be what are refered to as a "Warp" control.
http://www.muzique.com/lab/warp.htm

This is how the VFE site explains it:
"Variable HCC circuitry allows you to fine tune the harmonics, compression, and clipping character of your tone."

In particular, the Red Horse has a seemingly always on clean signal and the distortion sort of sits behind/under it in the mix. The Scream will also not blend all the way over to the silicon diodes side of the pot(set the internal switch so th middle position uses LEDs and you will still see them light up)

Is this just inherent in the design of this type of blending, or are there different component values that could mitigate or correct it?

I know the 3 knob triangle is the classic and each layout really depends on the circuit and its capabilities, but I'm looking for opinions on if there is generally something more preferable, like if you had to pick a standard or two. How many knobs, switches, what size, staggered, rotary, etc.. Give examples or pics if you can please... like 4 knobs in a square, 3 big 3 little vfe style, 2 rows of 6 like EQD and Chase Bliss. Also, some are tweakers and some like to keep it simple, so please state if you slant one way or the other.

Build Reports / VFE-MB Modular Mini Mega
July 18, 2019, 07:12:50 PM
Modularized with sockets and faceplates for ease of swapability. In a hand brushed 1590DD.
I'm planning at least another triple in a 1590DD to be connected with a hinge to this one.

VFE Projects / VFE Board List
July 10, 2019, 07:58:07 AM
I am a VFE fan so I just wanted to put this list out there to show how much stuff VFE has put out there over the years, and to encourage others to purchase the board and schematic bundle that is for sale on the VFE site before the option is gone. Peter has been very generous in making whatever he can available to encourage learning and I very much appreciate it.

The list below shows what is INCLUDED *** in the download bundle, and all the others that are not. If you know of anything else, please let me know. ( PS, I'd love to see the ROG "Standard"  format boards become available )

I have been maintaining a VFE spreadsheet that has some more info.
Here is the link to the full list, with notes:

Open Discussion / EHX Klein Bottle

Looks like EHX might have taken some inspiration from the Klein Bottle. $140 is not bad...
