I've retired from building for hire, but I still get a query every month or two from someone looking for a custom pedal.  If you're an experienced builder (IDK, maybe >10 completed?) and you're interested in getting mostly US-based referrals for one-of-a-kind work, PM me and we can talk.  Sometimes it's a straight clone with custom graphics, sometimes it's a start-from-scratch and design your own vero or PCB.  The last two queries were for a DOD FX76 Punkifier (clone) and an Alembic SF-2 (scratch.)  You can get a feel for the kind of effort that might be involved (scope, variety, historical price range, etc) here:  https://reverb.com/shop/mikescustompedals?query=custom&show_only_sold=true .  Thanks, Mike

Open Discussion / Who knew 38 kHz was good for your body?
February 01, 2023, 08:34:33 PM
Seriously, this is not spam, just stick with me here... I just read a curious article in New Scientist magazine that reported a study on low frequency ultrasound (LFU), and how it can rejuvenate aged body cells, making mice act younger after a few treatments.  However, the study authors were cagey about the exact frequency of ultrasound they were using, only telling New Scientist it was "below 100 kHz."  Even that much was not revealed in the study's (not-yet-peer-reviewed) paper: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.08.519320v1.full

After a little more Google-fu, I came across an equine vet's blurb on how they have patented the use of 38 kHz ultrasound for treating deep tissue injuries in horses.  They said the effective LFU range was 38 kHz to 50 kHz, which is certainly below 100 kHz, and they settled on 38 kHz +/- 2 khZ.  https://eqveterinary.com/ultrasound-therapy-for-horses-2/low-frequency-ultrasound-therapy-2#:

I'm betting the cell rejuvenation study guys are banking on patenting their LFU frequency and power levels for cell rejuvenation, even if it turns out to be 38 kHz.  Coming soon to a late-night-TV commercial near you: defeat ageing with ultrasound!  Maybe we should remove those low-pass filters from our pedals, and enjoy the health benefits for free...

Just a heads-up that I've been corresponding with Mouser about several of my orders stuck in their Economy Shipping mode, where they ship via UPS who hands it off to US Postal for delivery.  This normally takes 3 to 7 days (I live in TX and receive shipments from a Mouser warehouse one county over.)  Since July, it's taking 35 to 45 days, and Mouser says the issue is with UPS who is holding packages that long.  They don't know when it will improve.  For now, best to avoid this shipping option if you're not very patient. Stuff does arrive eventually.

Open Discussion / Small Bear returns!
April 09, 2022, 10:00:09 PM
Just made an order on the new/old Small Bear website, now operated by synthCube.  Same URL as before.  The new site had my old account info, including my (way too long) order history.  No PayPal option visible, but credit/debit cards work fine.
