General Questions / Re: 1N400X Substitutions?
March 04, 2021, 09:17:27 PM
For the voltages most pedals run on it doesn't really matter, the only difference between them is the voltage they can handle and even the lowly 1N4001 can handle up to 50V. The other characteristics are identical. You should be perfectly fine just using what you have on hand.

General Questions / Re: Suggest-a-fuzz

I'll throw in another vote for the Dizzy Tone. I've been messing around with a 'flipped' negative ground version of it lately and it sounds incredible, very gnarly and mean. I even got two sets of boards made up for it, one all PNP and the other using PNP for Q1 and Q2 and an NPN for Q3 to make use of some of the GT404s I have laying around. Time will tell which version turns out better, although I definitely have more NPNs that fit the suggested leakage specs in my stash than PNPs. Both sounded great on the breadboard.

Out of the loop a bit. What's a dizzy tone? Schematic?

It's basically a Buzzaround with a few parts values changed. Here's the schematic I used (found on the freestompbox forums):

Damn, that thing looks amazing! You've really been killing it lately! I really need to get around to building one of these. I sold my Rat clone to a buddy for him to use on bass and while I've been having fun with my fuzz pedals, I still kinda miss it.

Nice work, that thing is awesome! I'm glad someone finally built one of these, I've been curious about it ever since I saw it pop up on their projects page but not enough to justify hunting down a Morley to gut for it. Might take a stab at it in the future if one happens to fall into my lap, but for now I'm perfectly content to live vicariously through your super-clean build. Any chance we can get a demo?

I'm a bit mystified by the choice myself, and not just because I'm a bit salty that it's not an FZ-2W. The rest of the Waza releases to date have been reissues of some of their most sought-after classics with new added features and conveniences, so to release a classic, much-copied circuit that Boss/Roland never had anything to do with under their own marquee is kinda out of left field and feels like they're trying to squeeze their way into the already-crowded boutique fuzz clone market. The whole limited-release aspect of it also feels like it kind of goes against their brand image of being solid, dependable, reasonably-priced workhorses that are available everywhere. In any event, it's almost not worth worrying about since scalpers will buy them all up within minutes of release and resell them on Reverb for far more than I'm willing to spend so I'll probably never see one.

That looks incredible! Your graphics look amazing, as always! Think I'll take a page out of your book and put mine in a 1590XX whenever I get around to finally building mine, the 1590BB layout puts the footswitches way too close to the knobs for my big booted feet and it looks more natural in the 1590XX anyway. Great work!

I didn't get it specifically to serve as a 'pedal platform', but I use my Panama Shaman pretty much exclusively. It has a great clean channel, a killer distortion channel, a decent FX loop, and at 20 watts it's just powerful enough to hang with a drummer for a jam session while also not pissing off the neighbors too badly when I'm playing alone.

General Questions / Re: Klon into a Blues Breaker...?

^Like he said, you really shouldn't have an issue just from running those two circuits together. I'd put my money on it being breadboard noise, even well-behaved circuits can get noisy and oscillation-prone when you throw all those jumper wires into the mix and the more gain you have the worse it gets.

Sweet Jesus, that's crazy! Is there any circuit you can't cram into a tiny box? Seriously awesome work man!

Sweet Jesus, that thing is INSANE. What kind of deranged madman not only dreams up such a thing, but actually carries through with his psychotic delusions?  :o

Seriously though, that is an incredible build dude. I wish I had the time, energy, and mental fortitude to attempt such a wild and ambitious project! MAJOR kudos to you for not only coming up with the idea in the first place but for actually putting it all together and making it work!

Also, do you have any sound clips? I'd love to hear that monster in action!

I'm gonna go with Spaceman Effects. I really dig their aesthetic, their circuit designs are all fairly unique and interesting, and their boards are a work of art with all those funky vintage components they're designed around- not that I buy into any 'mojo' aspect of such components, nor would I ever design a board for a production pedal around such a funky mishmash of weird old junk, but you gotta admit it definitely adds to the 'cool' factor!

Well that's inconvenient. I don't mind ordering that many of the common values, but for lesser-used ones it's kinda hard to justify keeping 200 of them around when I only need 1 or 2. I had a cart almost ready to go too, just had a few more things to add. Serious bummer.

I too am quite familiar with "The Box". Mine has about a dozen or so boards in it at the moment. They all work, but unless I already have an enclosure ready to drop them into I'm really bad at coming back and boxing things up later so they join their brethren in The Box to await the end of days.

Incredible work! I built one a couple years ago and I will agree that there is no other chorus quite like it. How did you do the graphics?

Great build dude, I really dig the graphics!
