General Questions / EHX Q-tron
August 16, 2020, 07:05:00 AM
How come the big box Q-tron is not something I see as a project anywhere? Is it in the shadows of the mutron III? I know I've read how it's based on the mutron and I think by the same designer as well. To me  it sounds thicker and with a smoother top end. Close but a different flavor. Maybe Lectric should do one as they are like "THE" EHX guys. What say scruffie and keef? You can take my money now.

Build Reports / Glitchee
August 14, 2020, 02:03:45 PM
Another cool pedal from Brian. Took me a minute to dial it in for what I think I would use it for (how to be creative with it) and not just make noise. I can see writing songs around this effect. I only wish the envelope filter was a little stronger as this is a pedal that is not subtle so why not funk it up all the way. I highly recommend this build, took 3 hours from start to boxing  so it was perfect while I'm waiting on parts for some bigger builds.

General Questions / Ce-2 to CS-9
August 11, 2020, 03:08:48 PM
I was wondering if it's possible to mod a Ce-2 board into an Ibanez CS-9. The first schematic is the aquanet chorus and the second is the pork barrel board. can it be done or to many changes? Let me know what you guys think, I'm on this total chorus kick and this is one pedal I would love to build.
Thanks,
Chris

Build Reports / Lectric fx Clone Theory
August 09, 2020, 12:49:37 PM
Simple straight forward build that is not like my other chorus pedals. Much more wobble, very delicious wiggle. So much personality. Where has this been all my life?! And who was better at cloning better than Mystique? One other thing to note is that I ordered a bunch of reissue xvive mn3007s and they are excellent, that's what I used in this.

General Questions / Cds 9203 substitute
August 05, 2020, 05:14:52 AM
In case I can't find some 9203 photocells for the glasshole, is there a suitable sub for them in the phaser? If yes, what is it.
Thanks,
Chris

Build Reports / Whetstone phaser (Aion Redshift)
August 04, 2020, 05:28:23 AM
Like some others here I recently jumped on the Redshift and finished it up and it's a really fun phaser. I like having the two lfo speeds and all the options available make for some cool sounds. I need to get some more Velcro so I can throw it on the board. So many good sounds in this box and was a fast really strait forward build. Check it out while you wait for Brian to drop his.

Build Reports / VB-2 vibrato
July 25, 2020, 03:26:18 PM
This is a fun one. Byoc has been out of the kit since before the rapture started so I got the board from them and started getting parts together, that was in March. Small bear was closed and everyone was out of the BB tall boxes. Smallbear opened and got everything except the BA6110. Found one on eBay, from a reputable dealer that turned out to be a fake. Had to wait for a new one. And here we are with a great sounding vibrato. This thing sounds so good. For mellow or over the top or fast or slow it can do so many great sounds. What I really like using it for is the ramp mode to add some vibrato bar stank to my tele or some flair to some pedestrian playing. Why this isn't more available is beyond me, this thing is amazing.

Build Reports / Flintlock flanger
July 19, 2020, 01:27:31 PM
This is my fourth flanger build, and the only one I've built that I hadn't already owned. Because of this, I was thrown for a loop. The build was very straightforward. I built the board, tested the voltage, put the ICs in and it fired right up. Easy part is over. As many have experienced with this build, biasing is somewhat of a challenge. In my case it was made worse because I've never played this pedal, and have no idea what a properly set up pedal sounds like. To make matters worse, I had no idea  the controls were so interactive and complex. This is not like any Flanger I have played before.
After many videos explaining the controls and the sounds it can make, and after watching the moosapotameous videos on biasing I feel like I finally got it sounding like it's supposed to. This thing is like the Swiss army knife of flangers. I've spent a lot of time with it learning how it works and I feel like I've only scratched the surface of what it can do. Also it was a tight fit in the box. This build has been really educational for me and I'm ready for the next challenge.

Build Reports / King of Tone high gain
July 15, 2020, 04:06:46 PM
With the new amp in I've been on an overdrive kick, and thanks to sonnyboy27 cracking the code on the high gain mod I decided to finally throw together my king of tone from pedalpcb. I left out the on board 18v charge pump cause I prefer it at 9v. The lower headroom and added compression make it more amp like to me. I made the red side high gain and used some alternate diodes that were pretty much dead on fv for the unicorn tear diodes. Sounds like my old one I sold 5 years ago.

Build Reports / First couple builds in weeks
July 12, 2020, 01:40:12 PM
I recently got a new amp and have been playing more recently. The past couple years I have been playing my tweed amp and missed my deluxe reverb. I sold a guitar and got a vintage sound 35sc to go with my tungsten buckwheat. Having the tweed amp I got the overdrive thing down, but having a blackface again I needed to build some overdrive's cause I don't have many. Enter the classic tube screamer. This one is built on a pedalpcb oasis which is an EQD dunes clone. I used to have a dunes and it was my favorite TS variant. Then I recycled a drilled out enclosure and filled the holes and painted it. I built the EP-3 preamp on an Aion board. Subbed a 10n cap for the  47u on the switch like the chase tone secret pre. I never had one of these before but the added harmonic content and sparkle are really nice.

Build Reports / Boss BF-2 Flanger
June 27, 2020, 10:42:27 AM
First off, shout-out to to John (Bio77) and Felix (quantum effects). This project would not have been possible without them. John was kind enough to send me one of the boards he won from Felix. And Felix did a great job with this project. Thank you both!
The build docs were excellent and bias was very simple. I used to have a mij bf-2 in the early 90s and was my first Flanger, and man does this thing take me back. Sounds just like I remember it. Used cool audio bbds, no mojo parts or unicorn tears in this one. Another fun build, thanks again guys.

Build Reports / Rustbucket
June 13, 2020, 08:53:01 AM
Things have been kinda slow on the pedal front, between kids finishing up the school year, the increase in surgeries in the OR at work and catching up on yard work. This build has been sloooow. Glad it came out ok and works good. You know there are not a lot of demos out there on this one. It does what it's supposed to and sounds really cool. Way more control than the slow gear. I have to find a way to incorporate this into my playing, it's so different. Works best for me with low output single coils.

General Questions / Xvive mn3007
June 01, 2020, 04:52:34 AM
I know the xvive mn3005 is good as a reissue but  am wondering how the reissue m3007 stacks up against the originals. Anyone have any feedback for me. I have quite a few projects I need them for and although the originals are still readily available, I can get a price break on the xvives. More money saved means more modulation!

General Questions / Ferrite beads
May 08, 2020, 05:33:11 AM
I was wondering if ferrite beads are polar. I'm building a deadendfx pedal and these are the ferrite beads in the build doc. https://www.rapidonline.com/murata-bl01rn1-a62-axial-ferrite-bead-inductor-26-4860
Anything I should know before I solder them in? It's my first project using them and my Google searches brought up slightly conflicting results. Thanks for any knowledge.

Tech Help - Projects Page / freakout volume drop
April 10, 2020, 02:01:39 PM
I built my freakout and it sounds like it should but there is a slight volume drop. Any way to raise it to unity?
I checked all my resistors and they are all right. Thanks, Chris

Open Discussion / Spa day
April 05, 2020, 11:34:38 AM
It's been a while since I've done a real deep cleaning of my guitars, string changes normally but today I really broke down my #1 les paul and really cleaned her. Fret polish, board conditioning and full setup. I also went down to 10s for a change as i've played 11s for the past ten or so years on gibsons. they feel like rubber bands but it will force me to rethink my dynamics and attack. It took longer than anticipated because Marshall is the center of attention. you guys have any recent spa days with your girls?

Build Reports / CV build 4-muff content
April 04, 2020, 04:41:52 PM
Had a long week so I needed a big muff. I have built a hoof and a green russian variant and owned the NYC reissue. Built on an Aion board the musket is really nice sounding, or not if you like it like that. The pregain control is what I love about it. I want to build one more muff, an opamp, and between them I could get almost any big muff sound I could want.

Build Reports / CV build number 2 & 3
March 30, 2020, 07:28:01 PM
Working in a hospital is depressing right now so I decided to build two pedals this weekend while binge watching season 3 of the Ozarks. First up is a fuzzdog magnavibe. Sounds nice and wobbly, I dig it.

Next up is an Elka Dizzy Tone built on a pedal pcb buzzaround. Slight variations in the schematic make a noticable difference to my madbean bumblebee. This thing rips. Thanks for the inspiration guys. Stay safe out there.
