You ok???

A bit messed up. I've got a hairline spinal fracture in the lower lumbar. But I was able to be discharged after a few hours. Not sure about recovery timeline. I have zero memory of it - I don't even remember getting in the car.
Damn Brian, glad you're ok and still here. Take your time and get better, pedals can wait!

Much of what you are seeing in the original boss schematic is the buffered bypass switching. Here is the cliff notes of the core of the circuit. I have built both versions of the circuit and they have a different sound and feel.

Primo build, Chris!

What sort of set up did you use to test the SMD JFETs?  I'm picturing some tweezer apparatus  :o
You got it John. I can't justify the nearly 200 bucks for a dca75 and the extra 40 for the smd adapter. I'm using my trusty old 2018 Vero jfet tester and an smd adapter board blue tacked and socketed to the tester. Hold down a jfet, record the readings, set it in the tape and record the readings. After a reel of 50 I had the two sets I needed. One with a spread  of .01v of highest to lowest and the other with .008v. totally worth it.

Build Reports / Emerald Phaser-Redux
June 05, 2023, 05:41:13 AM
This is not my first time building this pedal, but I did go about it different this time. The first time I built it I used a matched smd jfets set from Aion. This go round, I decided to go through 50 smd mmbf5457 I had on hand and make my own sets, and it was worth it because in the end I think it turned out great.

This is one of two concurrent builds and is going to my homie @blackhatboojum Clinton is one hell of a guy and I wanted to make him one for father's day. He's the only person stuck in the past with me when it comes to pedals and we often talk about the nuances of old analog pedals, especially modulation and delay. Last year we took a deep dive on the phase90 and built some that incorporated mods that we discussed and implemented in our builds. That lead to me building the PH-1R and Clinton has always wanted to try one after I described it as the "deluxe" phase90, and I stand by that statement.

Other than the hand sorting tiny jfets the build was simple and straightforward with simple calibration. I wanted to make this one different from my last build of this which featured a green enclosure with Man-Thing, so this time I used a matte black enclosure and went with a green goblin theme. None more green, I used a green LED, small bear wire and green boss style knobs. Really happy with how it turned out and I hope he enjoys it. The other build which I need to box up still, is going on a dedicated bass board because this phaser is also killer on my Pbass. Quick sound clip I recorded while fine tuning the bias trimmer shows the phaser clean and with overdrive before my OD-1 build. If you're looking for a versatile phaser that's not ota or optical I highly recommend this.

I would try audio probing. Could be a bad cap somewhere. It's happened a couple times to me so worth a try, even when my voltages looked good.

Build Reports / Defouler Distortion
May 24, 2023, 08:06:05 AM
So here is the defouler, the distortion side of the backfeeder. It's sort of a modded/updated DS-1. It's got a lower noise floor and and the way the gain pot is incorporated is different. The overall tone and feel is a tad darker and smoother. It has around the same max amount of gain but the overall range is distributed more evenly and lower gain levels are easier to get. Same tone pot action though. Only changes are an mpsa18 for the npn and the diodes are bat46/4148 in series to get the original diodes fv.

Matte violet enclosure and UV print. As a teen in the 90s this is the only way I know how to use a DS-1 type circuit. Low parts count and easy build make for a good distortion.

I appreciate the comparison vid--I'd say I have a preference for the HF-2 between the two.
Thanks. I think sometimes a sound clip really helps show the difference. Here I think describing it is one thing but being able to demonstrate with clean and dirty tones makes it obvious that the hf-2 is coke zero to the bf-2's classic coca cola

Great Job Clinton. It's so cool that we got to do this and I'm glad I could help, you killed it on this one!

That looks great!   8) I have one of these coming online soon.

The difference in the flanging between the 1024 stages of the 3207 and the 512 stages of the 3204 is that with half of the delay time the notches end up effecting higher harmonics.  So, the fundamental is less effected.  Try it with bass, it should sound awesome.
I'm looking forward to seeing your build John!

Love the simple yet great graphics on this one. Super clean as usual, awesome.

Where do your source your jacks?

I generally get them from stompboxparts but have used tayda if I was ordering and needed them.

Knocked it out of the park with this one, as always. I noticed neither of your jacks are grounded. Was that fixed later or what happened there?

Input jack is grounded Jimi, look again [emoji23] I keep wiring as clean and minimal as possible.

Dude, minimal is an understatement! Nice job. I can see the solder but I can't see the wire.

That's been the plan all along, to get to the point that people think there is no wires lol

Hell yeah, dawg!

I've been thinking about an (O)GE-7, because I'm a mistress of the night for sliders, too. I'm liking this, though.

Also tight as ever, build wise, and that switch wiring is just damn perfect.

Thanks, wiring is my favorite part of the build, a true lost art form. I would love sliders but it would make for a bigger more expensive build and ain't nothing wrong with this layout.

Build Reports / Lucky 7 (Boss GE-7)
May 17, 2023, 08:14:16 AM
Guten tag fräulein, it's time for a new project. What's that? Is that a GE-7 graphic EQ with center detent pots in a 125B? Jawol 😤

I talked to David sometime in 2022 about making a legit GE-7 with sliders. The sliders became something of a hindrance as they were hard to source at the time, made the build more complicated and also required a larger enclosure. Recently he revisited the idea and decided to make it in a 125B and using 9mm pots. He sent me a board to verify and test out. So I fired up my iron and got to work. This is a faithful recreation of the classic circuit with two exceptions. The first is the change to pots vs sliders for obvious reasons. The second change is the output buffer from transistor based to opamp.

How's it sound? Like an EQ pedal dawg. It's much quieter than a stock Boss pedal due to the baked in use of film caps in the audio path, all metal film resistors and better quality opamps. At its heart it's a utility pedal but has an endless array of uses as a tone shaper and even an OD. The center detent pots make it easy to use and know where unity gain is on any given band. In the build doc I also gave him the values for the GE-7B spec for the bass players ( of which I will be building one for my bass board soon). Of course with math the values can be calculated for custom band frequencies.

The build was smooth and the pots I got from Stompboxparts. I also used some 12.7mm aluminum knobs because the look dope AF and give room between the pots. I went with a gray tayda enclosure and UV print. I went with Domino 🥵🥵🥵 and the lucky 7/dice old school tattoo theme. No demo/sound clip because it's kinda hard to show something like an EQ without a long boring knob turning video. If you want a better sounding GE-7 in a compact form then build one, or a bass version, or don't 🤷😂.

Super cool, Chris!  8)

Would you mind listing all the BF-2/HF-2/bf-2B mods for posterity?
Thanks John, you are instrumental in this. Why I have no idea what value changes exactly are in the fb-2b, here is what's changed on the HF-2 on the fraudhacker board:
R33:22k
R46:100k
Clock Trimmer: 1M
And of course, the MN3204. That's it 4 things. Now build it! 😂

HackHacker! I do like the subtler sound, I have to say.

super inside and out

edit: props for more AiC on the forum in demos  8)

Thanks Christian, AIC was a very important part of my formative years.

Hell yes!  Tight, clean, looks killer, sounds killer, there isn't anything that I don't love about this.  BBD brothers for life!  I was gonna wait for some potential future releases before I ordered another fraudhacker board but, screw it.  This shit is too good to wait.

YES! Can't wait to see it!
