Mods / Silverfox - Less drive, More Volume
May 03, 2011, 12:39:07 PM
so, when i was boxing up my silverfox, I inadvertently mixed up the volume and gain pot, and used 100kA for Gain, and 1mA for volume - this gave me much less drive, and a whole lot more volume - pretty much exactly what i was looking for. I realised my mistake, and corrected the pots, but I think I like it better as it was - a slightly gritty boost/OD with nice tonal options via the internal trimpots.

just wondering if there would be any adverse effect (in terms of impedance, etc) of going back to 100kA for Gain, and 1mA for volume?

Cheers,

J

Requests / Opamp Big Muff?

how bout it Bean? this sounds like one of those effects that's either loved or hated. me, I'd be interested in building one if a PCB was available for it  ;D

apparently the secret to the Corgan's siamese dream tone?

Build Reports / Pepperspray!
March 09, 2011, 06:03:55 AM
Just finished my Pepperspray, built to Albini spec's. i also have one of the Fredic effects "blue" percolators, which is built to the stock BOM on the pepperspray project file.

For diodes 4 and 5 I used bat41's - 2 in one direction, 1 in the other direction - I also used an on/off/on spdt to switch out the clipping diodes - to my ears the diodes switched out isn't all that useful, it sounds like a farty overdrive, and I may just stick to an spdt on/on. no clipping is A LOT louder however. more high volume research is needed to compare the GE diodes wth the BAT41's  ;D

comparing the Albinator with the stock percolator, the Albini spec perc is a bit more aggressive sounding fuzz, without being harsh - the stock percolator has a weird uber-compressed, almost squishy kind of fuzz attack - they both do the really loud harmonics, and they both have the  highly usual feedback. have only compared them at bedroom level, so more research is necessary.

Pics to come!

Open Discussion / Pepperspray / starting over
February 20, 2011, 01:01:35 PM
Hey guys,

well,  my band of the last 4 years played their last show last night. sadly our drummer was moving oveerseas. we had done quite well for ourselves, gotten signed, released an ep, a 7" and a split 10", played all over NZ,  and even played some shows in australia. for the first time in the last 8 years, I find myself not playing guitar in a band. (still playing bass though).

it's definately sad for me that its an end of an era, but im also looking to the possibilities of starting something new fairly soon. my previous band played basically pychedelic noise punk, with some doom thrown in,
and my effects chain was fairly heavy, going Fuzzfact clone, sho clone, BMP clone, fulldrive clone, homemade wah (baja's kiwi wah), an aquaboy and AD9, a phase 90, and modded boss tr2.

im looking at stripping back, and trying some new things (just pulled the trigger on Pepper spray, and the sonic stomp clone. also gonna look at the slapchop when its a available again. Basically the tone im aiming for is totally albini worship :-)  clean, trebly, boosted clang, and percolator fuzz madness, maybe with some reverb. I even bought a copper pick (no travis bean for me though, sadly)

dont have a band yet, but i just thought i would start writing m=some stuff and wait for members to fail into place.

any other recommendation for builds? again - clean but abrasive is what im looking for

General Questions / which OD to build next
February 02, 2011, 03:46:22 AM
Need some advice here - looking to build myself a nice, low gain (ie low drive), transparent overdrive, with plenty of volume on tap... can you guys recommend an MB project?

I've heard the Jetter Helium is what i'm after, so something along those lines I guess - but i'm open to suggestions

Requests / LFO Board
January 23, 2011, 03:06:14 AM
This could be an interesting little Utility board, to be added to other circuits, ala' the modulation add on for the aquaboy?

just a little LFO PCB that outputs to an LED - can then place an LDR across the pot you wish to modulate...

something along the line of FC's Clarinot LFO board here:

Mods / Mudbunny - tone bypass
December 26, 2010, 09:23:53 AM
I've done the tone bypass on quite a few big muffs, and have come to the conclusion that I could quite happily build a two knob bigmuff, and just completely leave out the tone stack

If i was going to do this on a mudbunny board, it would seem to me that I could just leave out : c10, c11, r18, r19, and the tone pot, and jumper c10 and tone 2-3..

am I on the right track?

Mods / Deadringer bass mods?
December 20, 2010, 10:17:10 AM
Should be building my fancy new deadringer that I scored in the PIF (thanks Brian!  ;D) pretty soon. I feel that my Guitar overdrive needs are pretty much covered, but I'm still on the hunt for a good bass overdrive (I really dig my Faultline, but I'm using that for heavy, woolly tones).

Any suggestings for values to tweak to get the Deadringer really ripping on bass?

cheers,

J

Tech Help - Projects Page / pork barrel speedy mod?
December 03, 2010, 06:32:10 AM
Any way to increase the max speed on the porkbarrel? I'd like to keep the slower speeds, but increase the top speed up to pseudo-ring mod speeds?

Mods / porkbarrel wet switch: more wet?
November 27, 2010, 11:14:39 PM
Hi all -

I'm looking to get a bit more bass out of my porkbarrell build.

my thought was - wet switch puts c25 in parallell with c17. I find even with guitar, its a little thin for my liking on the dry side. my plan was to swap c17 with a 33n (roughly the same as with the wet switch engaged now), and then another 12n/22n in place of c25 for bigger bass. I'm using my chorus for both bass and guitar BTW...

I will test this out in the next few days and report back  ;D

Tech Help - Projects Page / Porkbarrel de-bug
November 07, 2010, 05:12:32 AM
Just finished my Porkbarrel. I'm getting signal on bypass, and when the pedal is engaged im getting clean signal, no chorus.  when I flick the vibe switch, i lose all signal (which makes sense as it kills the clean signal, and thats all I have at the moment),.

can anyone post voltages for me to check mine against?

Also, I bought my 3007/3101 off ebay. the seller had good feedback, but now im pretty worried they are fake.

any Ideas where I should start to debug? is a fake BBD the most likely answer here?

Cheers,

Jeremy
