General Questions / List of manufactured boards
June 29, 2010, 08:12:46 PM
I know most of the boards here are etched in house, but I noticed the Aquaboy and I think the Sunking are manufactured.  Any others?

Along the same lines as Hyatt's thread about the Neutrino or Egodriver, I guess.   I don't have a particular tone in my head, but I'd like to build at least one of these.  I'm just looking for opinions which of the 3 you guys prefer.

I've never played or heard any of these in person, just youtube demos.  What is your favorite?

I'm having problems.  It sounds very faint and cuts in & out when I can hear it at all.
I've been over the solder joints and I can't see any bridges so I'm trying to look elsewhere.
One of the first things I'm wondering (since I have never used axial caps or made a positive ground effect before) is if I have the caps oriented correctly.  I'm using vishay bc caps like in the pic.

The black stripe on the north end is negative I'm thinking.  Does the neg lead go to the square solder pad or do I have them all in backward?

thanks

Tech Help - Projects Page / Transistor matching?
June 13, 2010, 05:00:00 PM
Hi guys

I'm building my first fuzz circuit  (big muff pi variant) and I wanted to ask if it's a good idea to try and find 4 trannies with hfe's that are pretty close to one another.  Does it matter?

Also, I was reading somewhere about a month ago that people put them in order of lowest to highest (I think) but now I can't find where on the interwebz I found that discussion.  Does anyone subscribe to that theory?

thanks everyone

General Questions / Potentiometer help
June 05, 2010, 05:46:39 PM
Specifically how to get the same 16mm pots from mouser as the ones carried by smallbear?  I know they're 1/4" shaft, but mouser has so many different shaft lengths and different options I can't figure out which I should be putting in the cart.

Any help is welcome but if someone has a link that would be great!

thanks

Build Reports / Krunkee
June 02, 2010, 12:28:41 PM
I don't think anyone has shown a Krunkee build yet, so I guess I'll be the first.
I was able to incorporate 5 caps I had hijacked out of an old CRT monitor I had laying around.  It was fun ripping that thing apart.

I ended up liking this pedal because it lets me play Brit sounding stuff on my American Ampeg Reverberocket.  AC/DC sounded real good, so I dimed the gain & before I knew it I was trying to remember some old Judas Priest licks last night.  Fun stuff!

If I had to do it over again I would not have gotten the Taiwanese red colored box from smallbear, which actually looks like it has a little bit of pink in it.  Oh well.

I used a black plastic LED holder that I cleaned, roughed up and painted white with Krylon for plastic.  We'll see if that paint holds up.  Since I put the dc jack in the top, I wanted it not to stick into the box quite as much.  I put a #8 o-ring over it before sliding it through and that gave me a couple of extra mm's in the box.  It also kept the jack from spinning when I tightened the nut.

cheers

General Questions / Blockhead?
May 19, 2010, 05:42:34 PM
Just wondering what to expect.  I really want to build a delay but I don't know whether to start planning for an Aqua or the Block.

Anything you can tell us?

When I ordered parts for this I had to settle on a 25k trimpot instead of the 20kB the pdf calls for.  I didn't find the 20kB at Mouser, ppp, or smallbear.

Will I be ok w/ the 25k here?

I've completed my orange squeezer "cupcake" build.

It is fully functional and is making nice compressed tones but the hum is always steady regardless of where the internal trim is set.  It gets louder as the volume of the pedal is increased, and much worse when another pedal is engaged simultaneously.

I've swapped out the IC with a jrc4559 and the transistors with mpf102's.  I tried these changes because I've read those parts are supposed to be less noisy.  No real appreciable difference.

I've tried different power strips, different outlets.  I've put a 220uF cap between the hot side of the dc jack and ground because I read somewhere that will filter electrical noise better.  No change.  I have not tried it with a battery, because I never installed the snap.

I'm starting to think the problem may lie somewhere in my soldering.  I have looked under magnification and I really can't see anything that is bridged.  There are a couple of spots where there might be some baked on flux or something that could be making a bridge.  I have found that the desoldering braid I got from Rat shack is pretty ineffective on the eutectic solder (63/37) I bought, so I'm having problems cleaning stuff up with it.

Sorry for rambling, but I figure giving a lot of details might help...  Does anyone have any suggestions of where I can start looking for a trouble spot?

thanks in advance

The battery of my neutrino got kind of hot & leaked acid on some velcro on my breadboard.  No real harm done to the breadboard.
I had the battery connected all day with the dc jack in (effect was off), which is supposed to interrupt the battery as I understand it.

Is it possible I have the ring & tip wired backwards on the dc jack or something?  Suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Build Reports / Neutrino
May 04, 2010, 07:16:34 PM
My first ever build.  I had read about a lot of first-timers who had a lot of probs- so I was bracing myself for hours and hours of troubleshooting............but it worked the first try!  Sounds good too!  8)

Alright, I know this forum is supposed to be for completed builds.  I'm just kind of excited right now.  ::)
I promise I'll come back in a day or two and post pics of the finished pedal.

Tech Help - Projects Page / DC Jack Wiring Help
May 03, 2010, 05:59:57 PM
Ok, I feel a little silly asking this, because it seems like I could have found an answer to this by googling.  That didn't work out.  So maybe me asking this here will help another noob later on.
I'm working on the neutrino.
I'm having trouble figuring out which lugs get which wires.  Since the jack is turned sideways in the following diagram, I can't tell what's what.
I think the black ground goes to the lug that is turned a different direction (bottom left in lower pic).  Is that correct?
Now what about the other 2 wires?  Thanks

Here's a pic of the actual jack.

Is there a reason people are so high on Xicon electros?  I've mined a bunch of caps off some various boards and none are xicons.  Is it a stability/dependability thing or do Xicons sound better?

Some of the electro's I've gotten off those boards are only 10v.  Are those pretty much worthless for pedals?
What about non-polarized electrolytics?  Should I trash these?

thanks

Tech Help - Projects Page / LEDs and PCB mounting
April 18, 2010, 06:10:19 PM
Hi

I'm trying to order parts from smallbear for the Cupcake and Neutrino.  I'm a little confused about LEDs and the way that boards are mounted/situated inside a box.

LEDs:

What size do most people use, 3 or 5mm?  Does it matter what kind/brightness I get?  Are the resistors for the leds already part of the design or am i supposed to add them?

Board Mounting:

Are the boards just kind of suspended by the pots and LED/bezel, or do I need to order some standoffs?

hellllp  :)

Open Discussion / General Questions about IC's
April 07, 2010, 11:52:29 AM
I have a ts808 clone (bbe green screamer) that I'm not completely overjoyed with.  The chip inside is a tl072 and I was thinking about putting a socket in there and trying a few different ones.

1) Can I just substitute chips like NE5532, LF353N, and JRC4558 without performing any additional mods?

2) Could I use a NJM4560D IC in it?

3) How about op-amps that are single-supply rail-to-rail?  Can a chip like the OPA2340PA  go in there?

4) I've also read about the TL2272, but I have yet to see it for sale anywhere.  Anyone have a source for those?

5) Also, I have noticed there are different versions of some chips offering different "Rejection Ratio" and "Input Offset Voltage" values.  For example, this is the result of a search for LM1458 on Mouser's site.  How do I know which one to buy (for Neutrino)?

Open Discussion / Breadboard Advice...
April 06, 2010, 09:50:19 AM
Greetings everyone.  This is my first post, and I'm a newb.   I've been studying madbean's board (pictured below) and I have some questions.  I guess I just want to get some advice about breadboarding before I get started.

1) What priority should I place on putting a BB rig together?  I just ordered 4 n00b level boards the website and I'm wondering if I should just try to put together, say, the orange squeezer clone (cupcake) first- or would it be a good idea for me to get the breadboard together beforehand.  Thanks in advance.

2) Out of curiosity, what size cutting board was used in the pic?  10xsomething?

3) How many and what value of pots should I get for a BB?

4)  madbean, where did you get that aluminum sheet?  I've looked around a little and I can't find anything like that.  Is the aluminum merely something to mount switches and knobs to, or does it provide a little noise shielding?

5) Also @ madbean, what is the purpose of the L bracket sticking up on your board?

I know that's a lot of questions, so thanks again.
