Just 2 of the many Linux rescue distributions.  They usually work very well

i would remove the hard drive from the laptop and put it in an external enclosure.  hook it up via usb to another computer and attempt to access it like a data drive.  rarely is the data actually lost unless there's a physical/mechanical problem with its hardware.

I do this sort of thing all the time.  I use this on 99% of the jobs:

It allows you to connect laptop and desktop IDE and SATA drives to another machine.

Build Reports / Re: Vaguely Russian Themed Firebomb
December 12, 2011, 01:08:06 PM
Thank you.  I think it sounds okay - kinda dark, but I really wanted to try an easy project that had the pots attached to the board.  I had never tried that before and I love it.  It makes building simpler and sturdier, IMO.  I will look for others henceforth.

Build Reports / Vaguely Russian Themed Firebomb

I finally got around to building the firebomb I bought last year.  Dead simple build.  Works like a champ.

in my opinion - learn about the components you are buying.  There are tons of color charts for resistors but for capacitors, I print this out and have it handy:

Every parts supplier seems to list caps a different way.  Knowing that 47n is .047uF and 47000p can save you from unnecessary screwups and wasted time.  As well as ruining boards by doing multiple de-solders.  I know this from experience.

I also find it helpful to keep a sheet with the pinouts and substitution qualities of the common transistors I encounter regularly.  It saves time not having to look it up all the time.

I really like the graphic style of your pedals.  Quite beautiful

Good to know someone reads it :)

He's not the only one.

And gorgeous work on the BOBRACHA!  It's easier to write than to say

General Questions / Re: Dinky Drive
October 26, 2011, 11:20:36 AM
That helps alot, actually.  I build these over the top fuzz pedals for fun, but I have no intention of ever using them.  The REM sound is more use to me. I use my Fetzer Valve most of the time for that type of sound.  Thanks for the info, I might try the DD out.

General Questions / Dinky Drive
October 24, 2011, 02:59:04 PM
Has anyone out there built the Dinky Drive when it was available?  Or recently, with Haberdasher's PCB service?  I am wondering what people thought of it.  The Rump Roast sounds so good, I was thinking the DD might as well.  Thanks

Congrats and best of luck.

If I may add a relative noob opinion, look at your wiring 5 times against the diagram, walk away for a few hours and come back and look at it again.  It's amazing how you can stare right at a mistake and completely miss it.  Be systematic about it and you will figure out where you went wrong.  Also check all your solder joints with a magnifying glass.  I have weak joints and solder bridges all the time.  Good Luck

General Questions / Re: Transistor orientation in LaVache
September 26, 2011, 05:32:03 PM
Thanks, Jacob.  You're right,  I do not have a 2N3565, I was going to socket a 2N5088 and try it out.  That was my confusion.  Another gap filled.  Thanks

General Questions / Transistor orientation in LaVache
September 26, 2011, 05:17:37 PM
In the build diagram, the transistor is not oriented at 9:00 or 3:00, but kind of 11:30ish.   Is there a reason for that?  Is it yet another gap in my stomp box building intelligence?  Thanks.  I appreciate it.

General Questions / Re: La Vache Transistor

Thanks, Ian.  I guess I kind of answered my own question with that one.  I might as well try the 5088 like you said.  (I have a dozen of them) I would still be interested to see if anyone has done that and what they thought.  Thanks again

General Questions / La Vache Transistor
August 29, 2011, 02:53:28 PM
Hello.  I am having trouble getting the 2n3565 for the La Vache.  How horrible would it be to use a 2n5088?  Has anyone subbed the 3565?  And with what results?  I guess I could socket it and see if I can find a 3565 later.  But I was curious if anyone else has tried it.  Thanks
