Mods / Re: Uproar: more, tighter gain?
June 27, 2012, 11:47:15 AM
I just finished mine last night - not boxed yet - it sound incredible.  :o No mush problems - I can full-gain it with a lot of "clarity" - a weird word to use to describe a distortion box.

There are many mixed reports here, some too "dark," some with anemic tone controls. It seems to all come down to the cap value selection, which makes a successful build a bit of a crapshoot without an agreed standard. We should all share our cap values and impressions in Uproar threads. And what mods we did or didn't try.

Did you make sure to change C9 to 10nF? That seems to be the most crucial modification.

I'll post my cap values. I've still got a presence switch issue to deal with; it doesn't do diddly. But it sounds so freekin perfect without it, I'd just as soon tape up the switch and stuff it in the enclosure never to be switched again.

I'm really excited about this build - it sounds like a cranked amp at low volumes, and sweet at all settings.

... and it worked.
... and it's awesome!  :o  Since everyone was waiting in breathless anticipation of my report, right?  :P

I skipped the germaniums, used a DPDT so the "voice" switch has 2 settings, instead of three. The two voices are sufficiently different, and both sound great, so I don't even wonder if I'm missing anything without the germs.

Incidentally I found a diagram at FSB depicting how to wire an on-on-on, for those wanting a graphic like what's missing from the OP. But truth be told, I didn't need it for my "mod." The Madbean schematic has enough info to figure it out with a paper and pencil and a few minutes of head scratching.

If anyone out there has only a DPDT and wants to try the same thing, let me know. I'll happily scan in my drawing if it will help.

The metal stomp washer really makes it. Nice build!

Don't jumper the presence switch. Just leave it out for stock response.

General Questions / Re: Uproar LED question

You could try removing R13 and replacing it with a jumper. That might drive the diodes a little harder. (?)

General Questions / Re: Uproar Artwork Vote

The cops overwhelming the unarmed individual is not my idea of a good riot.  Cars should be turned over and set aflame, for better rock and roll.

Or maybe a giant sized robot guitarist with KISS style high heel platforms shooting lasers out of his eyes, or crushing (with said heel) a crowd of riot police. That's just the first thing that comes to mind.   ;)

For 80's metal, you may want to try a DOD 250. It's a pretty simple build, and sounds quite rude. There's a layout at tonepad: http://tonepad.com/project.asp?id=44

OK, I just dug through my salvaged parts bin, and found a DPDT on-on switch which should allow 2 of the 3 clipper types fully implemented, which should be good enough. I can skip the germanium and be happy with the other two. I guess I'll scheme it up and see if it works. More later...

Did anyone save the switch diagram from this thread?  Mind sharing?

I have no problem wiring it up as described in the build docs. But this thread makes it seem more like a compromise, that takes away the full range of the voice switch, for the sake of those not willing to source an on-on-on dpdt which is $2.70 at Small Bear - not a lot to pay for full insurrection.

:o :o  Awesome build!

Do you mind if I steal your owl eyes idea? Not because I have no creativity - I just dig owls and think it's a hella-cool effect.

I bought some MN3007's on ebay before discovering the epidemic of fake chips and transistors out there.

Many varieties, which ones are fake?
Anyone know? Mine look most like the top picture.

Love the LED on the Crime Scene. Makes it look bloodier.

I dl'ed version 2 PDF of the Grapevine and there is no 151pF cap. I assume it's C9 that's supposed to be 151pF, is that correct?

Nice slow loris demo. Grr. Now I have to add it to my list of "to do's."

I was singing along "wooooo ooooooooo"
(with your feet in the air, your head on the ground...)
