Open Discussion / Re: Pedal Beer
November 26, 2011, 06:04:27 AM
I was in holiday in Iceland.. same thing.. we wanted to celebrate out 4th 'being together' anniversary with a bottle of wine, in the middle of nowhere, we ended up driving 2 hours to find one bottle. and payed 15 euros for the same bottle that is worth 4.5 euros in the closest supermarket here ..

I don't know about microbreweries in france.. i know that special belgian beers are much harder to find than in belgium were every bar and supermarket has at least 20 different beers and almost everybody drink these .. it's like mass consummation in belgium, huge brands (or so it seems). if you drive one hour south to france, these beers are impossible to find, except leffe and some chimay and the price doubles or triples.

We might not have been capable to make a government for .. more than 500 days ...  but we can get drunk for cheap to forget that.. :)

I was talking to a guy from Sweeden on another forum and he laid out the process of what he has to do to get great beer. Blew me away how difficult it was let alone expensive.

Is it hard to get micro beers in France and how come?

I KNOW!
haven't got the chance to put my hands on even one of these so far :)
You're good! or live very close to belgium?
it's already very hard to find most of these beers in france, except the leffe of course.
is the westvleteren living up to its reputation?

MMM i love Belgium beer!! Just got lucky enough the other night to try Trappist Westvleteren 12 which is pretty much the #1 rated beer in the world by beeradvocate. If your in Belgium, seek it out!

Say, from the moment you decide you'll build something, you ordered the parts and received everything..
you sit at your bench and start whatever it is you do first (i suspect the most effect thing would be make a template, artwork, drill, paint, label, clear coat, THEN build..)
How much time does it usually takes you to go from the first move to the finished product.. in hours of work?

during the day : coffee and water.
during the evening : ... blue chi may or triple westmael, duvet, orval, so many great beers in belgium. But after the fourth one you might stick the soldering iron into your eye if you're not VERY careful..

Around here, in belgium, we have small local organizations that are starting all over the place. In english that would be called something like 'givery' the idea is that it's a mailing list of people of your .. say town or large neighborhood. people send messages saying that they give things they don't need instead of throwing them away. you can also send messages saying that you're looking for something and some people might say 'hey i have this thing in my attic it's wasting space, you can have it'.
I started building 1 month ago, i received my laser printer and the oven for the powder coating using this..

I've heard the idea comes from the US, maybe you would try to find a local thing like that around your place and ask away..
One of these organizations is also called 'freecycle' i think that name is international.. you might have a free cycle  mailing list for new york and one for paris.

It was very helpful for me..
Hope that helps

I have made a excel sheet with my components stock and i tried to add components prices from several sources. When i want to order for new projects, i go through it and make a new excel list with the needs, which automatically estimates the cost if i buy that list from one site or another one.
Still not perfects, but it's nice....
it still have to find an easy way to add the new components i've received to keep it up to date without too much work.

i read the description of several boutique effects and i sometimes read: 'codes mponent are top quality' or variations of that.
What are the key components that should be choosed high quality to have that boutique sound ?
i've read a lot about the film/elec/tant caps debate, but i guess theres more than that to it.

a few questions to get the discussion started:
- is it better to use higher voltage caps? i've read that from time to time. if thhe max voltage is 9v, does it improve the sound to go from a 16v cap to the came cap, 100v?
- high quality jacks vs low quality jacks: is there a difference?
- what about the quality of the box film (mica) caps, is that good? IF there is any difference between two caps of course
- is there such thing as a better quality IC? i mean into the same model RC4558 > LM4558 , ... ?
- metal film resistors vs carbon ones?
- does the quality of the pot only relates to how long it will last and how fast it will scratch + how closely it is to the theoretical resistance

What do you guys to give your builds that extra thing that makes them really shine.
If you DO have magic/better parts, what's the brand, and where do you buy them?

Curious to hear the experienced builder's opinion about that
Peace

I am wondering if anybody tried this method to get a kind of stencil for painting labels and if it would work?
- Paint background color (in my case, powder coating)
- Print the art and labels in negative with a laser printer on high gloss paper
- Iron it on the box
- Apply the label color using spray can paint or powder coat
- remove the toner using acetone
- clear coat on all of this

open questions:
- Would the toner transfer method work on an already painted box?
- Would the toner resist the heat needed to cure the powder
- Would the spray can paint/ cured powder resist the acetone when removing the toner?

Is there any other method to create a stencil from artwork done on computer?

The way i see this, this could be a way to get MXR type labels, painted on the box, and i'd love that :)
Thanks for sharing your experiences, if someone has already tried that

Peace
