Tech Help - Projects Page / Dialing in a Mangler
March 08, 2012, 04:47:51 AM
Hello all,

I finished populating a mangler board and have it on the test rig. The circut works and sounds fuzzy!

Questions:

1. I built an NPN with CV7112 (OC140) trannies. I did not use the supplied resistors from SB and instead used what the build doc said (100k, 33k, 220R,470R). This is ok since there is a bias pot correct?

2. Speaking of which, my voltages are not negative (i.e. -4.5v) but are showing positive instead. Is this because of the NPN trannies/build or do I need to swap/change anything?

3. I used the red dot on the CV7112 as the collector. Is this correct? I have read different stories on this.

BTW: the pedal sounds pretty good (I think) but I have nothing to really reference against being a fuzz-face newbie.

Hello,

I have a "non-polarized" electrolytic cap, 2u2 for C1 of my mangler build. Is this ok to use in this here or do I have to have a polarized electrolytic for this position?

BTW: The mangler is NPN for -9v power. I have reversed all other polarity components already.

I was not aware that non-polarized electrolytics existed?

Thanks

Tech Help - Projects Page / Mangler Pre-Gain Mod
March 03, 2012, 04:05:08 PM
I am doing a mangler build and want to add the pre-gain mod to it and want to make sure it is wired-in right. So does wiring go:

Input jack tip->lug 2 of 100kb pot->lug 3->to input of pcb?

Is this correct? Are there any resistors/caps I need to also wire inline? Thanks for the help!

Open Discussion / EH Holy Grail Mods?
March 01, 2012, 01:42:10 AM
Hello,

I was curious if anyone has ever modded a Holy Grail reverb power supply or might know how to do it. I am thinking of re-boxing the big-clunky reverb into 125b (or smaller if possible) and would like to change the power to a 2.1 center-negative (boss adapter).

Right know it is powered with a center-positive 3.5mm supply. Is it possible to change this or is it more trouble than its worth? I like the reverb but not the large box and power supply. Also, any other worth while things to mod with this pedal?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Mangler NPN Wiring
February 27, 2012, 01:47:53 AM
So I got some NPN "continental" trannies coming from smallbear for my mangler build. I wanted -9v power without using a roadrage.

I want to wire it up with 9v, battery option, and an LED and know I need to flip the diodes and electrolytic caps, so...

Do I also wire the LED opposite (negative side to the DC jack with an in line 4.7k resistor and positive side to ground on the 3pdpt switch)?

Thanks for any help or additional advice with this!

General Questions / Solder lug 9mm pots?
February 26, 2012, 12:05:29 AM
The only 9mm pots I can find are board-mount (smallbear and mouser)

Do they make solder-lug 9mm pots or do I just solder direct to the pins if not board-mounting them?

I am putting together a build list for a future cave dweller and the doc says to use 9mm pots (1590a build)

I do notice smallbear has some 12mm solder lug pots. Those may work?

Thanks.

Tech Help - Projects Page / GGG Phase 45 Volume Drop
February 20, 2012, 04:02:07 AM
Hello,

I recently built a GGG phase 45 and really like they way it sounds BUT notice a volume drop when it is engaged. It is not major but I would say about 10-15% volume loss when on.

I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion to get the volume up a bit. I don't really know what to change, check, or tweak to do this. One thing I noticed is the build kit specified a 500k reverse log taper pot OR a 100k linear pot. They sent me a 100k linear in the kit. Would this cause a volume drop issue?

Thank you for any help and suggestions. Here is a link to the schematic if that helps the geniuses here!

General Questions / Tonebender/Pastyface Versions
February 20, 2012, 12:04:00 AM
Hello,

Just wondering what version of the pastyface would get me the Jimmy Page-ish sound. I am not familiar with the TB in general so looking for advice.

Should I be considering the "Sola Sound" version for this? Or will the "Soulbender" version be able to dial in  good classic tone?

For reference I'm after this sound of an original TB Fuzz (sounds very Jimmy Page to me)

Build Reports / Wolfshirt: 4th MB Build
February 19, 2012, 08:12:18 PM
Hello,

Here is my latest, the Wolfshirt.

The graphic is waterslide and I went with a tribute to the original 1941 Wolfman, Lon Chaney, Jr. When I was a kid I used to love all the classic monster flicks.

I had to mount the board vertical cause I drilled the octave switch a bit high but it all worked in there. This one is built to spec and uses the 2N3565 trannies. Very different and cool sounding fuzz. I have a huge radio tower close to my home and this pedal picks up some RF just like my zombii but it is not bad. Enjoy.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Wolfshirt Test BIG RADIO?
February 18, 2012, 08:51:02 PM
Hello,

Just tested my wolfshirt circuit (rock it before you box it) and everything works EXCEPT it is picking up a local radio station very loudly. I had the circuit board grounded with the test rig and all. I tried a couple different power sources, including battery with the same result. I also clipped a bunch of different resistors in-line with the input and also a capacitor between input and ground with no change in the loud radio.

I built the circuit to spec using the 2N3565 trannies. Should I expect this to go away after it is boxed up or is there something I should check on the board? Note: My zombii also picks up "faint" radio but not near as loud as this. Any ideas bout what to do before boxing?

Thank you.

General Questions / Wolfshirt Capacitor Question
February 12, 2012, 12:00:23 AM
So I apparently ordered a 630v 47n cap on accident for C11 in my wolfshirt build. Obviously wy to big to fit so...

I found a .047mf ceramic (or mylar labelled 473M on it) cap in my bin. Is this ok or should I get a better poly-film cap at my local RS or order one?

Thanks for the advice

General Questions / Rattlecan Clear Coat Method
February 10, 2012, 03:13:47 PM
Just curious about how those of you who use rattlecan clear apply and finish it over waterslide decals

I have used rustolium and krylon acrylic enamels with "fair" results but would like to perfect it a little more to get a flat-smooth finish. Basically I still end up with a orange-peel type surface.

I use inkjet waterslides, dry overnight,
spray 2-3 coats of clear to seal ink,
apply decal to enclosure, dry overnight
spray 3-4 coats of clear
Done

Do you guys build up a good amount and then wet sand/polish? Other ideas or methods?

Thanks

Tech Help - Projects Page / Zombii picking up radio?
February 07, 2012, 11:18:24 PM
Hello,

The title says it all. Not sure if this is normal or not but my Zombii picks up a specific radio station when it's on. I can hear it pretty clearly coming through the amp. The pedal sounds great and seams to work properly otherwise.

Is this an issue? Something specific I should check? Thanks for any advice!

Build Reports / Zombii (scary content inside)
February 03, 2012, 03:14:21 AM
Here is my 3rd MB build, the Zombii featuring a scary glowing red eye  ;D

Board is from Haberdasher, awesome quality. Trannies are SINOs from SB. It was a challenge to get a vertical orientation, battery, and 9v supply but it fits. This thing is super fun, all controls are highly interactive with each other.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Zombii Wiring Help
January 30, 2012, 05:18:06 PM
Hello,

working on my Zombii and there is no wiring diagram, specifically for the LED. There are 3 LED holes on the board (positive, negative, SW) together. How do I wire this up? I assume the SW wire will go to the 3pdt and i just wire the positive/negative to the appropriate LED legs right? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for on-board LED?

Also, I am going to use a 3mm LED with no bezel. How is the best way to secure it to the drill hole? Superglue?

Thanks for the help

General Questions / Enclosed vs open Jack size?
January 26, 2012, 02:41:51 PM
I am building a zombii and currently trying to use open 1/4 jacks but have a clearance issue with the edge of the jack and part of the circuit board because of the way i have the layout configured.

My question: is an enclosed jack "smaller" in terms of overall width compared to an open jack? I don't have any enclosed jacks to measure. If even a millimeter or 2 would be helpful. Thanks for your help.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Egodriver fizz
December 14, 2011, 12:08:21 AM
Hello,

I love my egodriver, it sounds very good overall. The only issue I notice is there is a fair amount of fizzy artifact only when the sustain is decaying. It does not seam to have a smooth decay at all. This happens with the normal and LED clipping options and on both LP/HP.

Is this normal with this circuit or is there anything I can do to improve this?

Thanks for any advice

Build Reports / Egodriver and Grapevine Builds
December 13, 2011, 05:00:14 AM
My first 2 MB builds.

Egodriver with LED mod, bad paint pen graphic that I will redo at some point

Grapevine "DLS Clone" with custom waterslide decal

For me the Egodriver wins but the grapevine sounds pretty awesome as well. More to come  ;D

General Questions / Road Rage IC question
December 11, 2011, 05:38:06 PM
Hello again,

I am looking to build a road rage just to get negative-ground power to the Mangler (PNP fuzz face) and the build doc calls for TC1044SCPA in IC1.

Smallbear only has a ICMAX 1044A chip. Is this the same thing, will it work fine for -9v power?
here is the link:
http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=244

I would like to just "one-stop shop" if I can so I am hoping the SB IC will work for this application

Thanks for all the help!

General Questions / Mangler Powering Question
December 11, 2011, 12:17:04 AM
Hello,

I am going to build the Mangler soon and would like to power it with a standard 9V (boss style).

If I used NPN transistors instead of the standard PNP would I still need to use a Road Rage in there as well? If so I will just order the standard PNPs.

Not very familiar with positive ground effects and fuzz faces (obviously)  ;D
