Open Discussion / Re: Macheen or Cosmo?
April 03, 2012, 11:16:29 AM
Finally got time to finish my Cosmo, its amazing!
I love this pedal.  I mean it hasn't been turned off since I got it working and I cant hardly find settings I don't like.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Ok.. figured it out...  really embarrassing.

Long version of the story; I must have drilled the holes for the pots in the enclosure too close to the top.. I had to do some "extra" trimming of the enclosure and the pcb to get it in (hind side.. I should have just bent the  leads on the pots a little).

Anyway, in my effort to trim the pcb.. I trimmed too far on both sides (the 45 deg angles) and severed the upper ground plane from the lower.

Tested with a temp jumper and it got louder, had some fuzz (although not as much as I had expected).

What a bonehead move.

I'll try reflowing the pot solder joints..they were a bit tricky for me.

I don't have a spare bc109 or ac127.. any of these work in those spots  (mpsa18, 2n3904, 2n5089 & NTE159 (which the person at the supply store told me was a direct match for 2n2907)

Some voltage readings with all pots full right (full on).

BS170 (Q1)
S = ~270mv
G = 2.35 v
D = 4.56 v

BC109 (Q2)
E = 4.83 v
B = 4.81 v
C = 4.81 v

AC127 (Q3)
E = 4.81 v
B = 4.82 v
C = 4.82 v

Zenner
Sripe side = 2.34v
Non strip = 268.1 mv

Thanks for the help.

Here's a quick pic. of the board, maybe it's something obvious that I'm overlooking.

Yeah, that was my first thought too.
Double checked the pinout's and even tried flipping them around for the heck of it.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Cosmopolitan Not Working
March 25, 2012, 02:21:58 PM
Got my Cosmo built but it's not working as expected.
When turned on I have to max all the pots and the volume is just less than untiy through it.

Volume pot works,  Shape pot changes the tone slightly, fuzz will adjust volume slightly.

Using an audio probe I'm noticing that with the fuzz pot maxed I get no sound at any of the lugs on the pot.  Turn fuzz the other way and I get sound on lug 3 but nothing on 2 or 1.

Also with fuzz maxed there is a volume drop and distortion across D2 (Zenner) & across Q1's Collector and Emitter, turn the fuzz the other way and the volume drop across D2 & Q1 goes away.

Not sure where to look next.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

I started ordering the parts for a Cosmopolitan.

Ok.

Thanks!

Couple of quick questions.

D1 - Can I sub a 1N4001 or 1N5818 or ?? in place of the 1N5817.
C2 - Cant find a 200pf cap, would it be better to parallel (2) 100pf  or would a 220pf or 180pf be ok?
Q2 - BC109 - Hfe average around 200 Ok?  or higher better?

Thanks!

LOL!

Ok, so both help and it goes along with what I was thinking that macheen may be cool for a day or so but then... just get put to the side and forgotten.

I'll let this question bake a little longer see if anyone else cimes in but I can see that a cosmo may be a lot more fun in the end.

I also ordered a Chunk Chunk board, I've never built a pedal that required biasing and this has 4!!  ;D  Also it looks like it goes to "11" and the perfect match for the sustain of my LP.

Later!

Open Discussion / Macheen or Cosmo?
March 19, 2012, 02:31:52 PM
Hello, I'm trying to decide what to build next.. would like some opinions please.

Between the Macheen or Cosmopolitan.

I like the idea of the Macheen but I haven't read anyone who seemed to go crazy over it.  Not many videos of the real Machine either.

The Cosmo seems like a cool beast too.

Not looking for any particular sound out of this.. mostly just looking for something to build to keep me out of trouble and that may be a bit off the beaten track.

Cheers!

Cool!  Thanks for the replies.

I just built a Zombii, used the 9mm pcb mounted pots from SmallBear.
As I turn through the ranges, there is scratchiness, like the pots are dirty.

So a couple of questions:
1) is this normally how they are and all is fine?
2) How do you get the cleaner spray into these things?

I don't see anyway to get any spray into them, the shaft going into the housing is smaller than the knob part so it looks like it would act as an umbrella and prevent most of it from getting down there.

Thanks
