Finally got around to boxing up my Thunderpuss, the first board I completed some time ago. It's in a 1590A, all black.

Cute little fellow, I'll have to be carefull with the size 12's.....

I also tested my Porkbarrel and ChunkChunk boards, both are functioning perfectly and are awaiting their enclosures..... I'll keep you posted!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Pork Barrel transistors...
February 29, 2012, 08:03:49 PM
He guys,

I was just about to put the transistors for my Pork Barrel in their sockets, when saw that they are labelled 2n5087 (it says 2n5088 on the baggy they came in, but that doesn't really matter, does it?). I first checked out some datasheets online, but couldn't really see that much of a difference..... can I use these, or should I exchange them for some proper 2n5088's?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Knob issues......
February 22, 2012, 07:30:37 PM
Hey guys,

While I was working on the drilling template for my next build, a Pork Barrel, I encountered a small problem. I bought some really nice cream chickenheads, but while measuring everything, I noticed they would not be able to rotate completely because the board-mounted pots are quite close together. Thinking outside the box I came up with a plan: mount 1 pot to the board, move the board left (or right) a bit, and connect the other pot with some wire. But....... will my board stay in place hanging on only one pot? I need this stuff to be secure, cause my pedalboard takes some abuse, loading in and out of the car, rolling over pavement etc.
Is this a viable work-around or should I take my loss and use some other knobs?

Open Discussion / Board mounted pots made easy.......

While I was building my Banana Split dual overdrive (see the build-report here: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=3902.0 ) I was thinking of a way to make mounting the pots to a board easier and came up with this:

I just cut it from some cardboard after drawing it in AutoCad, here is how it works:

And this is the result, very tidy!

This works so well, I think I'm gonna try to get it cut out of sheet metal for durability! Whem I'mat work monday I'll convert the drawing I made to PDF and post it here.

Hi guys, this the first complete build that I can present here, the Banana Split Dual Overdrive!

It's an EgoDriver and a Green Bean in one box. The first time I tried it after I had boxed it, nothing happened, which was a big disappointment, as both boards worked before boxing (rock it before.....). But after a quick check I found I had wired the 9v jack backwards, which was an easy fix and now it works fine! It sounds like crap, but that's only because I have a terrible practice-amp at home. I'll take it to band-rehearsal on monday and introduce it to Mr. Marshall (60 watt TSL-head, not the best-sounding Marshall ever, but 3 channels and plenty loud, so ideal for gigging with a rock band), probably sounds a lot better with some volume and some valves......

I was gonna call it just Dual Overdrive at first (yawn...), but when the box arrived and I saw how extremely yellow it was, a name change was in order: The Banana Split!

The build went quite well, I found soldering the boards is a lot easier than actually wiring everything together in the box, that's a big PITA!! The enclosure was drilled by a guy at work with a template I drew myself in AutoCad, everything fits perfectly. Thanks Melvin!!

Also a big thank-you to Brian (The Original Bean!) for providing the top quality boards and documentation, and to the forum contributors for helping me with my questions and educating me. You all made sure I now have another hobby to spend my time and money on!

I have a couple more boards from The Bean, so I'll be back in the near future with another (hopefully just as succesfull) build. This ROCKS!!!

Open Discussion / Really CHEAP film capacitors ?!?!
February 15, 2012, 09:08:08 PM
Hi guys

I was wondering if any of you have experience with polyesther film capacitors made by a company called Evox-Rifa. I can get some selected values for 4 cents (euro) a piece at a local electronics store , which is actually dirt cheap, I think.
If they are any good, I could get something like 200 of each value (1n, 2n2, 3n3, 6n8, 33n were the ones) and mail them around. Let me know what you think!!

Build Reports / First build: Thunderpuss
January 05, 2012, 03:33:10 PM
Hi Everyone,

I'm so proud to announce my first build, a Thunderpuss! My partsorder came in earlier than expected, so here it is! As mentioned by Mad Bean himself, it is quite suitable for a newbie like myself.... Had loads of fun doing it, I'm glad I already have some more boards and parts, so I can solder some more this weekend!

In the first picture you see my workspace. It's not ideal, but it works, and there's mechanical ventilation there, always a plus while soldering! The second pic is the completed board, the third gives you a look at my soldering, not bad for a first attempt I guess.....

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Newbie builder
December 27, 2011, 02:25:42 PM
Hi everyone!
In the last few months i've been learning a lot from this forum, what does what etc..... Now i've got some boards from The Bean and some questions regarding general board manufacturing!

1: Do i mount the components flush to the board, or some distance from it?
2: Is there an order which works best? for instance: first resistors, then capacitors etc....
3: what kind of wire to use?

I will post some pics of my progress, all help will be much appreciated!

Greetz, Paul
