It's not the cheapest piece of gear, but I feel like I can throw just about anything at my '65 Vibrolux and it'll sound great.

It's people who just want to make a buck as quickly as possible and don't give a shit about anyone else. Management in large companies are also fraught with people like this. It's the reason I quit. It is possible to make money and have some integrity also. You just don't make as much or make what you do as fast. Nicer place to be, nicer people to deal with.

And in most cases, honest and fair business is more likely to be sustainable over a long time.  Greed can make people short sighted.  They make money quick, but it eventually burns down.

I think a good place to start is to order some of the 1/8w resistor packs on eBay.  You get a large assortment of various values - good value.

If you don't think you will need all of them, then you can order from Mouser or Digikey for a few values....shipping will be much more expensive making the eBay packs very attractive (provided they have the values you seek).

I think this is a good approach.  Start off with an eBay kit and refill as the values get used up.

Mouser is a good source.  Allied has really good prices as well, plus you can throw in a few cheap opticouplers in the cart to help justify the shipping.

But I'm a pragmatist.   

I am nearly positive that you can just use an MMBT3904 in Eagle and the pinouts are the same.  Just to be sure, I'd recommend double checking the datasheets.

There is an SMD version of the 5088 and the 5089.  I can look it up later if you can't find it.

It depends what you are looking for.  For an 80's JCM800 type, try the Riot.  For a more modern, Boogie type distortion, the Dr. Boogie is good.

Jokerx's design is getting a lot of positive reviews, but I haven't build one yet.

I have a '65 Blackface Vibrolux with original Jensons and a '67 Blackface Super Reverb that currently has reissue Jensons until I get around to getting the original CTS alnicos reconed (will happen soon).
