Open Discussion / Re: home etching boards layouts
April 30, 2014, 05:46:19 PM
I get that people like etching boards.  That's totally cool.  I think it's amazing that Brian spends as much time as he does doing etching layouts for folks that would rather make their own boards than buy fabbed boards from him.

For some of the more complicated boards, the amount of time that Brian would have to spend putting together a fabbed layout is probably just not worth it.  For those, I suspect it makes more sense for him to only do the fabbed versions.  And even for folks that like to etch, buying a board here and there isn't so bad and it helps keep this place running.

Just my 2 cents.  Not criticizing anybody, just trying to present a different perspective.

That got lots of awesomeness content, great work!

So if i understand correctly what you are saying about the SMT dual pack JFET, chances are that the each individual packaging are a matched set?

That hasn't been the case of the single package FETs I've seen, but maybe the duals are different.

It doesn't surprise me that both FETs within the package match well.  I'm really surprised that you can randomly grab two duals and have them match.

Thanks Dave!  You've been a big inspiration...!

If I've played any part in inspiring the work you've been showing off, I take that as a huge compliment.

General Questions / Re: Sticky Envirotex Cure?
April 30, 2014, 01:56:57 AM
I would suspect that there are cleaners that could mess it up, but I don't know of any solvents.  I think the biggest risk would probably be using something that too abrasive.  It could easily scuff up the properly cured surrounding area.  I'd probably just start with isopropyl alcohol.

Depending on how sticky it is, I think your biggest risk is likely that the cloth you are using to wipe it with will leave little sticky, furry bits on it.  Hey, maybe that will look good if you do it right.   :o

That looks nice.  The application looks pretty even across the top.

A thicker application of epoxy would actually make it cure faster.  Epoxy is exothermic and cures faster at higher heat levels.  With a thicker application, more of the heat is trapped which keeps the epoxy at an elevated temperature, reducing the cure time.

Contamination of some sort maybe?  Otherwise, maybe that was some portion of it that didn't mix well?  How long did you mix it for?  I usually mix it carefully for 2-3 minutes.

Yeah , they seem to have changed their policy back.

I had four boxes made a short while back and the pricing matched the structure you posted.

It really depends.  If there is a section of epoxy that wasn't properly mixed, it may never cure.

If you are certain you mixed it well, it is a more difficult question to answer.

I was actually going to guess that the Cusack used a DSP chip, but I have no idea, really.

Nah, it's only 750mS and they say it's really noisy and dirty. Sure sounds like a PT2399 to me.

Yeah, I didn't read that part.  I'm sure you're right.

The SMT version of the chip is the PT2399S.  I've used it on a couple of layouts without issue.

The Dumberoid looks great and all, but you're never going to sell it with wiring that neat.

I found myself just as impressed with the fact that he fit 5 chicken head knobs on the thing. I can barely fit 2 or 3 on my builds without them knocking into each other...

I don't want to take away any awesomeness from this (because it is freakin' awesome!!!), but the chickenhead knobs do stick their heads out over the edge of the enclosure. Might have used a slightly bigger one with the same footprint. And yes, gutshots would put us all to shame........ Cool stuff!

Paul

This for me, too.  I love everything about it except the chickenheads.  Fitting them on is impressive, but I think it would've looked better and been more functional with different knobs.

Well, it might be different with 2M2.  It's possible it was all in our heads, but I believe that all three of us (me, Juansolo and Cleggy) felt it was a little dark and it seemed to improve by snipping the 1M.

I also felt the build sounded different with MLCC caps vs electros and I've always been a capacitance is capacitance guy.  I'd have to double-check how close the MLCC caps were being run to their rated voltage as they derate as they get close.

Interesting, indeed.
