I've found BJT input opamps sound different (usually warmer) to FET opamps, Slew rate differences can effect things too. There's just different shades of grey to component selection within working reason. Some don't hear any differences at all.. I do..

Open Discussion / Re: Ibanez Super Metal SM-9

The SML , SM9 is not the same as a Metal Charger it has a transistor output buffer. It is the same as a SM7 and there's a schematic http://www.freeinfosociety.com/media.php?id=4071  I know it's an old topic but some people do search like me. ;)

I've had better luck with ups mail innovations than FedEx smart post. Probably because I live  near a UPS center but that ain't saying much.   Avoid both if possible..

Open Discussion / Re: Advice on JCM800 clone

Buying Marshalls sight unseen is  a crap shoot. I've owned a few duds and have a great sounding one now.  If it sounds great then it is.  Everything Marshall after 1972 73 is on a PCB board and the lead dress isn't great either. I'd pay 500 for it if I was looking for a jcm800

Incidentally, I get an error when I post, but it looks like the posts are actually hitting the database properly.

I think that is Tapatalk. I've deleted it for now so let's see if that stops the error.

I can't log on from Taptalk. Sucks to loose the data but lucky it's not all :)

Open Discussion / Re: How do you guys feel about the Pod?
December 28, 2014, 04:34:12 PM
I have a pod 2.0 and the hd500. The HD is a PIA to get a serviceable tone, it sucks, I like my pod 2.01 better. I also have a eleven rack and that slays both.

General Questions / Re: Bias of Q1 in FF builds
May 17, 2012, 05:31:13 PM
THANKS a lot  ;D   I did a lot of searches here, diystompb, and FSB. Saw a thread on diy but nobody could say in laymans terms what is going  on. I do have a AS in EE and know my math but there is more to music than just math alone. Haberdasher told me you were the man for this.... thanks again jakefuzz

General Questions / Re: Bias of Q1 in FF builds

Ok, why the trimmer on q1 then?  It's not a booteaker builder doing this.  They must be adjusting for something in production. A fixed resistor is a lot cheaper.

Yeah I know it's not necessary for it to work. But there must be some mojo there... Just wondering what it could be.

General Questions / Bias of Q1 in FF builds
May 17, 2012, 03:25:02 PM
I know biasing Q2 is talked about a lot but there seems to be scant information on biasing Q1. I've seen Germ FF that have trimmers on Q1 + Q2's collectors but haven't found out why. George Tripps and Dunlop wouldn't put one in a Joe Bonamassa fuzz for no reason. I've heard that there are typical Q1 voltages for silicon and germ ff but nothing definitive. Any takers on this here on this?

I didn't know where to post this question... Is there an app I can use to browse our forum on a mobile device? Safari is a PITA... I have forum runner for FSB, GearPage, and TDPI. Madbean uses simple machines so TapTalk would work if its enabled here but can't seem to find out if it is without buying the app...
