I'm a complete goober when it comes to this stuff (hint: in Kiwi slang, a goober is a globule of phlegm or spit, *NOT* baby food), so I didn't comment on your first post.

Please pass on my best wishes to the client, though -- where there is life, there is hope :D :)

No, no, no, Jimi... that's not what you say!

Pretty sweet A build :)

Your next mission, should you choose to build it, is the Dub Edition Cave Dweller ;)

I've generally only heard of this being a problem with multiple circuits using charge pump chips, OR with multiple circuits with different clock signals for each.

Juansolo has the most experience with this.

Sometime people want a "warts and all" vintage sound *shrug*

Lace's build doc describes how to jumper the board for only true bypass and leave out the switch for spectral.

Spectral bypass in the Doppelganger is where the signal still goes through the filters when bypassed, it's just that the filters are not sweeping (LFO's are not on.) Spectral colours the bypassed sound.

Did a brief write-up on the other thread. I can do some more notes on the other ones I've built later (not atm)

Open Discussion / Re: DIY Phaser Recommendations

With regards to the OP, I'm not sure it's safe for me to think on this!

Let's see... in no particular order:

2 - Smoothie
4/5 - Stage Fright
8/4 - Prophecysound Infinitphase
6 - PS-1A
4 - Doppelganger 1.4
4 - Doppelganger 2.1
6 - Nu-tron Phasor ][
20 (!) - Tau Pipe Phaser

Subjectively, stages for filtering, the best sounding ones are the optical ones. Of those, the toss-up is between the Infinitphase and the Doppelganger.

Infinitphase Pro's
- Single LFO, but insane LFO. Tweaker's paradise.
- SEQUENCER! Very tweakable!
- EIGHT or four stages -- very, very liquid on 8
- Intimidatingly big
Cons
- Needs 15VAC, not common
- Annoyingly big
- You can spend ages getting "that sound" if you're not careful
- Complete pig of a build, Wile E level

Doppelganger Pro's
- Dual LFO! Yay! You can get a kind of "beating", with this
- Slow and Square switches -- not as tweakable as Infinitphase
- More on the Dirtbag Genius level of building, but still quite do-able
- Lush, vibey sounds can be had!
- Runs on bog standard 9V DC

Cons
- Not as liquid as the Infinitphase, PS-1A, or Tau Pipe
- Version 1.4 had issues for some (2.1 is issue-free :) )
- Not as wee as the Smoothie (still a damn sight smaller than the Tau and Infinitphase though)

I suspect I'm hilariously, horribly off, but I've got "stuck flanger and some kind of low-med distortion" in my head.

Never heard an audiobook (the drive to work is eight minutes, TOPS), but Terry Pratchett is one of my all time favourite authors (along with Anne McCaffrey.)

Open Discussion / Re: Why did you start building?

Ho-kay. Growing up, Dad had a shelf FULL of electronic stuff that he never did anything with (he's one of those people who never seems to have spare time), but I had no clue what I was doing so didn't touch most of it.

In High School, I discovered first my local BBS, then the wonders of the Internet. Then I discovered the synth-diy mailing list (late 90's). I've still got a notebook somewhere full of schematics I copied out but (at 50c a week pocket money) couldn't AFFORD to build.

I thought about learning guitar but, when I saw a page of chord charts ("You mean you have to memorise those semi-random patterns?! ALL those?!") I decided to learn keyboard instead. I wasn't hugely good.

A decade later, I heard Oasis' song "Talk Tonight". That was the one that spurred me to consider learning how to play guitar (at age 26, I think.) I don't think I finished making it through Ernie Ball Volume One, though.

I had a job that paid real money, and decided to build a guitar amp (since my MG15CD amp is fucking awful), on the basis it could be quite fun, more fun than just /buying/ one. This gave me a bit of confidence with that soldering thang. (And my 40W iron -- it's lasted me awhile!)

I spent several months doing the "Guitar to amp is purer!" thing, then decided I wanted to try out one or two effects, not a lot. The BD-2 Dad had felt uncontrollable to me, so I looked further afield. A guy on NZGuitars described the LaVache glowingly, and it sounded like a good match for my noobie hands, so I picked one up.

Building pedals turned out to be FUN. And cheaper than buildings amplifiers -- a LOT cheaper. My self-control is poor under these circumstances.

Once my confidence was propped up a bit, I remembered my high school dreams of a big MOTM modular synthesizer wall. Hmmm. I wonder how much harder a synthesizer module is than a guitar pedal... to quote Clarkson, Hammond, and May, "How hard can it be?"

The litmus test would be what one stays on your pedalboard.

The Doppelganger (in two versions) and Tenebrion have been on my pedalboard since the day I built them, unbelievably good phaser and 'verb. The Cosmopolitan is my go-to fuzz/OD/distortion.

The only reason the LaVache left my board was because the power jack went dodgy (need to replace it.) Excellent for low-gain dirt.

Were you in any trouble with the rest of your household when they saw all that lot in one place?
