Build Reports / Snack shack
May 10, 2012, 12:28:53 PM
Here is the board I received, populated by master Brian himself  :)
Went in a black sparkle enclosure from PPP, I used these enclosed jacks for the first time.
It works fine and this is a really cool fuzz, love it!
I still don't have my own amp right now but I received a superb PCB in the mail this morning  ;D
I'm placing big orders to build it .

Tech Help - Projects Page / Capacitor question
May 04, 2012, 11:43:41 AM
[Noob mode = on]

I grabbed some sunking before they went out of stock, and Madbean sent me a hard to find capacitor with it.
It's a yellow film box labelled 390 nJ 63. I know this is a dumb question but since in the BOM there are 390nf
3.9nF and 390pF I don't want to go wrong with this one.
I think it's 390nF but usually on caps the code would go to 39pF.
This is the first time I get a cap with a different labelling method...
Am I right? Thanks

Man I hate to feel like a noob again  :'(

Build Reports / Double big muff tri/ram
April 27, 2012, 12:21:09 PM
I finished populating and wiring these months ago but haven't finished the enclosure till today.
This is Pi box using 2 Mudbunny : one triangle specs with 2n5088 and the othe ram's head specs with 2n5089 .
All went in a 1590BB, I tried a distressed aluminium finish. Doesn't look great on pics but this is cool in person.
Labelled the pots on the knobs.
I really like both of these versions and I can't decide wich one I prefer. With a 2 in 1 box, and different knobs  adjustments you can switch to a different gain with your foot  :)
When you engage the 2 muffs at the same time, this is insane (in a cool way  :o ).
Still haven't got my own guitar gear so the demo is for later...

when they don't write the size of it!
It is rated 50V only :o
This not a mojo board, this is a MOJO board  ;)

Finished this project while everyone was asleep at home.
It's a Shin-ei companion fuzz using a Pigeon Fx board, 2n5089 trannies, vintage cloth wire (first time using it and man I love this wire! I'll use it on all future builds, now I don't need a wire stripper anymore...).
I salvaged an old pink enclosure from PPP I used for an aborted project, just added a new layer of paint and removed the white paint to trace this lettering, I'm not that happy of the result.
Now I know why sinner of freestompboxes said "it's a so crappy this is genius circuit".
This thing is huge, there's plenty of really cool fuzz sounds depending on the fuzz pot and the guitar volume.
Can't wait to test it on my own gear  ::)
A highly recommended build  ;)

Open Discussion / High gain Jfet fuzz
April 06, 2012, 11:04:09 AM
Hi guys!
I'd like to make some experimentations with my own design of fuzz.
I've got a question. I'd like to try using Jfets like the J201 and adapt it to circuit close to the fuzz face or maybe a tonebender. Since the pinout is completely different, do somebody know how to use them before I tweak the circuit on the breadboard?
Thanks

Hi!
I'm very happy to have finished this Mangler I started months ago  ;D
I found some minutes here and there to make a few solders every day. I have quit my spaghetti style wiring method and really tried to reduce the lengh of my wires.
I used NOS 2n404 GE trannies from my huge stock, with Hfe 80-120 and these are awesome!
I tried this pedal with a cheap Ibanez with a Fender Frontman 15R from a friend 'cause my guitar and my amp burned but I think this pedal would kick ass with a Tele and a Tweed  ::)
I really need a guitar, and I don't know if I'll buy a Baja Tele or I build my dream guitar from warmoth parts??
Sorry for the crappy painting on the pedal but I lost lots of things so I used water based paint pens as usual.

Cheers!

Open Discussion / Cheap parts source
March 14, 2012, 10:41:24 PM
Hi guys!
I just discovered the Alibaba website. You can deal directly with chinese manufacturers and prices are ridiculously low  :o
For example :
Around 1$ for a 3pdt switch (20pieces minimal order)
2.5$ for a 1590BB (20pieces minimal order)
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/346663048/1590BB_Style_Guitar_Effects_Pedal_Diecase.html
0.3$ for an enclosed switchcraft jack !!!  :o (but you need to order 500 pieces lol)
http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/340601370/Switchcraft_1_4_in_Mono_Stereo.html

Do somebody here had a good experience with that website? That would be awesome for group buys

Open Discussion / Hello everyone!
February 22, 2012, 09:53:27 AM
Hi guys!
Haven't been here for months now...
My wife was at the hospital with a lund disease, at that moment I had to work and take care of the baby.
Then one day, when I went back home, I found the firemen spraying water on my smoking house  :'(
I lost lots of things in that fire. We lived in a friend house until the insurance gave us money to repair our house. Now I have an internet connection again and I still have lot of work to do.
I'm so happy to be here again, I missed my hobby and you guys. "Hopefully" all my parts were stored in my garage and none were burnt  ;D
I won't be able to finish some pedals in the near future and I have months of posts to read.
I already ordered a weener and a dirtbag, I was waiting for them eagerly befere the accident.

Ps: Haberdasher, I still have the GEs for you, and sorry for the huuuuuuuuuuuuuge delay  :P

Open Discussion / Wiring tricks
June 24, 2011, 04:38:45 PM
Hi!
I can see lots of beautiful and neat wiring here, at the opposite mine is spaghetti looking.
If you have some personnal tricks to share here I would appreciate the help :)
Like the type of wire, wire stripper, wich components you wire in or out the box, in wich order?

Build Reports / Fuzzjelly factory
May 24, 2011, 09:18:36 AM
I know it's not an exciting build, since I've given my fuzz factory clone (built from a poor quality kit), I wanted to try the zombii.
I've built it with 16mm pots, hand selected nos ac128, and I ran out of led bezel so this will be added soon.
Compared to the kit I built, the ac128 loaded zombii sounds fantastic!
Even if it's not my favorite fuzz, as I like to play some Muse sometimes, and get squealing tones, it will stay on my board.
I've painted the enclosure with red transparent paint, silver spray can, and quick labelling with paint pens.
I don't wanted to spend much time on the enclosure this time...

General Questions / Hfe testing
May 16, 2011, 07:22:34 AM
I just baught a 100pc pack of germanium ac128 and want to test their hfe.
My cheap Dmm usually oscillates between 60 and 160 for the same tranny in hfe mode.
Any advice on a trustworthy Dmm? Or maybe another method to test the hfe?
Thanks

Build Reports / Butcher's fuzz
May 10, 2011, 08:07:28 PM
It's not a madbean board but it's available as "the snack shack".
Here is my build #10. I wanted to try the turret or tag boards so I used a DAM meathead layout I found on FSB. I built it on a tag board, using "mojo" components, glued the board with a glue gun. I'm pretty proud with my wiring this time. I wanted it to look like coming from the hell's gate, rusty, bloody  ;D
so I sanded it with the dremel engraving tool ,let the enclosure sat in salted water + vinegar for 5 days...
and TADA!  ::)
The fuzz sounds awesome, a lot of bite!
I really had fun using these tag boards, I think I'll do some other simple pedals like that ...

General Questions / fatpants tc1044 scpa
May 06, 2011, 03:33:53 PM
Hi guys, I'd like to build 2 fatpants. I can't find some tc1044 scpa on banzai, smallbear, or ebay.
The only one I found is on mouser, they charge me for about 25$ of shipping for 2 chips  :-\
Do someone has a good link to another seller, or if someone has two on spare, I'd be glad to pay you the chips + shipping with paypal!
I've seen some samples are available on microchip.com but an corporation or university mail address is needed to register...
Thanks in advance

General Questions / Slow loris diode clipping
May 02, 2011, 04:21:01 PM
Hi!
In a hurry I replaced the leds of the diode clipping by some bat41 diodes, thinking it's a cool idea.
Is it going to work or do I need to swap the diode for some red leds like in the bom?

Requests / Death by audio fuzz war
May 01, 2011, 05:54:30 PM
I just heard a death by audio fuzz war, and it's awesome!
It covers various fuzz sounds with it's tonal control, high pitch to big growl, passing by a big muff...
It has an internal gain control. It would be cool to clone it and put it on the outside (I don't know why it's inside  ??? )
There's a thread on FSB for it : http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2692&hilit=fuzz+war

Build Reports / Boomstick
May 01, 2011, 05:49:54 PM
I just finished a boomstick from a wonderful fabbed pcb. Easy to solder, it worked correctly after wiring.
I used fairchild Bs170. All the caps are from panasonic.
Once again I'm pleased by the zvex distortions. This one has a vintage feeling with a lot of grain, in the spirit of old marshalls.
As usual I used my spaghetti wiring method  :P
Enclosure is black hammertone from PPP.

Open Discussion / Fume extractor
April 29, 2011, 08:49:48 AM
I wonder if you guys are using a fume extractor when soldering. I'm considering of buying one for 40$ on banzai, to keep away cancer and lung disease from me. Maybe I'm too much carefull 'cause I'm working in a cancer treatment unit...

I'm looking for an easy submini or normal tube amp and I'm an absolute noob with tubes
