Open Discussion / What makes things hard?
April 04, 2015, 07:15:09 PM
I was just perusing the projects page looking for sale items when I noticed this.

Fuzzes are easy, low part counts I guess.

Distortion is medium, mid grade amount of parts.

Filter and modulation is hard, lots of parts plus complicated biasing.

What is it that makes manipulating a signal to modulate so complex?

I'm at school right now and a few of my classmates are workout junkies.  However, they aren't too pushy about "EVERYONE MUST WORKOUT".

They try to be the helpful type, still annoying.
Anyway, one of them said, "You need to get into a rhythm that feels natural to you."

That sounded exceptionally stupid.  You know what feels natural, not doing a damn thing.

That's the problem with people trying to say you should do something they do.  You aren't them.  If everybody did the same thing you liked then we'd all eat fries with mayonnaise; and that would result in very much murder.  If I told these guys to sit in a poorly ventilated room and poke little metal things with hot other metal things they'd think I was insane.

What is natural to you doesn't have to be natural to me just because we each have the same basic arrangement of proteins and acids.

Meh, whatever. screw it.  I'm bored. Anybody out there around Fort Leavenworth?
Sorry for eating up message board space.

Open Discussion / 1N4001 vs 1N5817
February 05, 2015, 10:22:03 AM
If this was discussed, then I missed it.

What's going on with the transition from 4001 to 5817 as the power protect diode?

Open Discussion / Gordon Smith guitars?

I'm interested in a Gordon-Smith Graf.
However, I've never heard of this guy before.

Does anybody have any experience with them?

Open Discussion / Links/About/Forum
December 09, 2014, 02:09:55 PM
Does anybody else ever get stuck in and infinite loop of death between "Links" and "About" when trying to get to the Forum from the Projects page?

I probably wreak havoc on Brian's visitor counts when I click back and forth a dozen times between the two before I break the cycle.

Open Discussion / Frequency splits
December 03, 2014, 09:35:06 AM
I may have asked this before, I can't remember or find.

Is there a frequency splitter or notch filter sor of thing that will take everything above say 5000k and send it down one path and averything below that and send it down another path?

I don't want to eliminate the frequencies, I just want to break into multiple signal paths that can be indipendantly manipulated and recombined later.

Open Discussion / Why do I have these LM386n ICs?
November 29, 2014, 10:37:46 AM
I just cleaned off my desk and found a tube of three LM386N ICs.

I know these generally go in Ruby's and Smokey's.
Did I buy these for something special or just to have laying around?

Open Discussion / VFE circuit walkthroughs
October 15, 2014, 08:54:14 PM
lThis link is to his Tube Screamer, he does this for a bunch of his pedals. It helps see what different circuit sections are for.
I especially like the walkthroughs and part sourcing tabs.

Open Discussion / My building buddy
September 05, 2014, 08:39:39 PM
I took a break from building today and got some POV action footage of my building buddy doing what he does best.
(footage related because you can see a glimpse of my table)

I put a camera on my dog and you wouldn't believe what happens next.

Build Reports / Blue Box with fabric cover.
September 01, 2014, 03:28:11 PM
I recently saw an awesome Foxx Tone Machine and felt like doing something with fabric.
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=17053.0

I took my Tonepad Blue Box and had a friend do some embroidery to make a cover.
This is the first time I've done fabric work on a pedal.  It's not too hard, but you have to be careful about how much spray glue you use.  The stuff works really well so you don't need a lot and if you use too much it'll dry out through the fabric and just look crusty.

Nothing special, just fun with fabric.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Strange mangler issue
August 02, 2014, 01:57:16 PM
My Manger (new model) works fine.
I have my Loophole V1 running a test signal through it and it sounds like I expect it should.
Fuzz knob works, volume knob works, and biasing back and forth provides the expected outcome.

Then I unplug from the Loophole and plug in with a guitar (I've tried active and passive).
Fuzz knob becomes useless, until that last little bit of turn where it totally cuts out the throughput.
Biasing does nothing.
Volume works, but its behavior changes so that it can hardly reach unity even when it's pegged out.

The only thing that's changing is the input; going from Loophole to any instrument.

Have any of you had this sort of thing happen?
It's a first for me.

Open Discussion / Blackface in a box
July 15, 2014, 06:28:46 PM
Do we have any "Blackface in a box" pedals?

I'm being asked the following:
"I use a Fargen modified Tiny Terror.  I love it, but sometimes the cleans sound sterile.  I would like to have a pedal that allows my amp to take on that blackface on the edge of breakup kind of sound."

Build Reports / SMD Multi mini
July 11, 2014, 12:42:24 PM
This is my first proper mulieffect.
The multi isn't so bad.  It was easy enough to figure out the individual effect on/off switching. Powering the box isn't an issue.

The SMD wasn't very difficult either.  A syringe of solder paste and a $5 toaster oven can do wonderful things Thanks go to wgc and pickdropper on SMD help and motivation.

The worst part was getting it all in the box.  I really suck at boxing up effects.  The worst of the  worst part is that I tried to drill the pot holes off line from each other to give a little extra finger room.  It ended up just looking wonky and crappy.

All pickdropper boards
Sonic Screwdriver>Hall Spawn>Mini Blue

Backyard spray paint finish.
To the salvage box!

R7 on my Pickdropper Mini Blue smokes when I put power to it.

Everything is as it should be, component value wise.
The only thing I could think of is my diode is in the wrong direction, so I flipped it.
R7 smokes with the diode in either direction.
When R7 is off the board nothing happens.
I tried a few different resistors for R7.

R21 doesn't seem to have any issues.

Why is R7 smoking?
I'm using the normal 9v 1spot I use when testing all my boards.
