My country is about to vote itself into 1984 so that was fantastically well timed!
... and quick me back to my country of origin with a pat on the back.

Video is brilliant.

Open Discussion / Re: 1/8 Resistors

I used to buy all my 1/8 resistor from Paul: http://www.diyguitarpedals.com.au/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=19_21

0.06 AUD for each resistor seems a good deal to me, and Paul is a really nice guy to deal with

Cool.
Are you using G or D tuning?
If your left hand is getting tired, you might want to audition a few different steels. I find this one to be quite comfortable as you have a bit more meat to hold onto:
http://www.shubb.com/gs/

I'm using D, but find the gauge a little bit light (it came with  .013 - .056) so I may switch to some 15s (need to check carefully, as I am not supposed to exceed a tension of 165lb).

For the steel, I am using a Shubbs SP-2 but wanted to experiment with some glass tone-bars (we have Diamond in the UK, which are the ones Fredrik Kinbom uses and I love his tone), but will definitely check the GS. My main problem is that I have really small hands, when I play standard guitar I can stretch thanks to my classical training, but I find it difficult to hold the tone-bar & mute the strings with my ring finger without getting tired.

New Weissenborn day! (I actually got it two weeks ago)

After being playing slide guitar for a while, I decided to jump into the world of lap-steels. I also wanted something acoustic so I can just take it whenever I am motivated and play it and to be able to take it to the park in summer (living in East London that's what the cool kids do).
So a not too expensive weissenborn sounded like a good idea. Left hand (tone-bar hand) is not as easy as it may seem and it gets tired quite fast when I play, but I have spent the last two weeks listening to Jerry Douglas like crazy...

well, not saying I like the idea at all. But at least he is not selling a pcb but the components to build it on vero.

mklec is a member here btw

As soon as something is publicly available, someone's gonna pull it apart and trace it. As long as that stays within the DIY realm I have no issue with that. Even with a PCB. Basically we all got into this to build effects and see how they work. A lot of that is building clones of already existing stuff.

It's only when arseholes start using those layouts in commercial products (JHS, etc) that I have an issue with it.

I agree 100% and I guess most people in this forum would. I actually think that tracing pedals has helped to identify many of these companies and to clarify some situations (like the Vertex's wah thing). Moreover, it pushes the community to learn how to discern between a good quality and a bad quality product and to try new designs & ideas.

How do the twin rate knobs work?
I would bet that the left footswitch swaps potentiometers in the circuit, giving you two different presets.

VFE Projects / Re: Relay details
May 08, 2017, 07:27:00 AM
From the doc:

QuoteThe schematic lists TQ2-L-5v as the relay in this schematic, but VFE used the TQ2-L-4.5v as well. According to Peter both work fine but he tended to use the 4.5v relay. The 5v is listed in the Mouser BOM because it is more regularly stocked.

Global Annoucements / Re: Very sad news
May 05, 2017, 08:07:58 AM
It is really sad indeed.

I never got a chance to talk to him personally but loved to see the builds and layouts he was coming with and he always seemed a nice and helpful guy.

My best wishes to his family and friends. It may be a small thing, but his work will always be remembered by some of the members on this forum.

I guess you never know what someone is going through, but I agree with what has been said before: there is always someone to talk to out there, even in an small and mixed community as this forum is. There's a person behind each username, post and build and that's something that should never be forgotten.

RIP Mark. RIP Chuckbuick.

Thank you guys! I took a look at bitsbox and it looks like they have the standard Hammond colours. Apparently CPC also stocks those at much cheaper price (free shipping included)!

Hi everybody!

This is my first post in a while... I haven't built a pedal since I moved to London (about 18 months ago) and that needs to end now!.

I brought some boards with components from Spain on my last trip but I need to get some enclosures.

I used to etch my boxes before, but I live in a small flatshare and that is not an option at the moment, so I thought I would give a try to the laser cutter I have at work and see if I can get it to engrave powder coated boxes.

I have gotten some good quality ones from stevie1556 here in the forum (UK based) in the past, but he has not been active since December '16.

I did a quick search and found this shop in Edinburgh, but they are a little bit expensive and found no reference of their work whatsoever:

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

I took the course on its first round. It is quite interesting, and good to understand the basics of DSP (which, to be fair, I already had) and dip a toe on the work of audio analysis and synthesis. The approach is quite theoretical and you'll have to keep in mind that they won't focus on application-specific examples, but I totally recommend it.

I did a Master of Science on Audio & DSP after that and some of my classmates that did not have the previous DSP experience that I had said that course helped them to understand better some concepts.

I think that's the 'Abbey Road' approach, but, for what I know, results are better if you use a pre-reverb eq.

Those finishes look gorgeous Juan.

It is a pity that the standard line run did not work out. With the price and the quality, I thought they would sell pretty quickly.
