Build Reports / Box of Clean
February 18, 2016, 06:55:42 PM
I had these circuits on my board in various other forms as single pedals, now put them in one box to save space, using Jon's Millenium Bypass.

Open Discussion / Changing amps
February 05, 2016, 11:26:28 AM
Recently I sold this amp

Framus Ruby Riot with mods (vintage AC30 specs, halfpower switch etc.), German made, English Celestions, quality parts etc. etc.

and bought that amp (used)

Blackstar ID Core 10 (cheap tiny modeling practice amp for home use).

Cool huh?

Nah, I'd have bought the Blackstar or some similar amp anyway (I tested the Fender Mustang 1 as well, too big even for the apartment, and the Blackstar sounds better to my ears), I needed something quiet for home use. For that, it really is more than OK.
I still have 1x12" tube amps.
The Framus has just stood around for years. Too loud, even for Clubs here, I could never turn it higher than "3", and it was only the clean channel I was absolutely satisfied with. In the last band I never used it anymore, just the 1x12 combo, so I finally decided it had to go.

Build Reports / Some 2015 builds
January 19, 2016, 12:35:43 PM
I had posted reports for these:
Pryde's subtlety drive, one of my favorite Overdrives, a modded Runoffgroove Peppermill with Tone control and clipping options. Recycled enclosure, cow sticker covering up some old labelling.

Build Reports / The Double Barber
April 24, 2015, 05:36:30 PM
Here's a very tight one. Not the cleanest wiring, but proud to have all that stuff in there.
On the right side is a Barber Gain Changer clone. I got the PCB in a PIF from Cooder, so all the thanks for this great circuit goes to him. I promised to post a build report in return, so this is it.
On the left side is a clone of a Barber Direct Drive by Chi_Boy from Osh Park. The trimmers for Bass and Presence are regular pots on the outside. They're subtle but effective.
Also inside: 1776 Klon Buffer and Road Rage for more voltage.
The enclosure is just brushed, not treated otherwise.

How it sounds: warm and bright, smooth and raw with a very open kind of compression and the most transparent toan coloration.
Seriously, you know how these sound: glorious. I had orignal Barber both LTD and LTD SR, and Cooder's PCB sounds just like these but with more gain on tap. Love it!
This pedal is all the overdrive one needs.

Just read this:
http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/22329-visual-sound-changes-name-to-truetone-and-announces-jekyll-hyde-v3
So, by and by all their products will have the new name, also the Truetone 1 Spot power supply.

Weird. They have a well established name. Do their sales struggle? Is "Tone" better than "Sound"?

Edit: I see they discontinued all of the weird shaped single pedals and are focussing on the square shaped doubles.

Hey,

maybe you can help.
I have this "KarmaDrive" PCB (Zendrive), want to build one into a 2-in-1:
http://oshpark.com/shared_projects/UGjECcF5
Here's the BOM:
http://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B5uJxBYQtM7iYjQwQkZqV3ZxczA&usp=sharing
(Karma Drive PCB Mount Pots)
And the project page: http://www.reddit.com/r/KarmaDrive/
I don't remember where I stumbled over all this, I ordered the PCBs without checking anything.

I have built one Zendrive on vero before using the Tagboardeffects layout:
http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.de/2012/01/hermida-zendrive.html
and it sounds right to me.

Now, looking at the parts values of the Tagboard one, and also Madbean's serendipy (http://madbeanpedals.com/projects/Serendipity/docs/Serendipity_ver.5.pdf), and comparing them to this OSH Park one, there are some differences. This one has eight capacitors (optional power filter, unnecessary?), the others have seven. Other differences too, some slightly different resistor values etc.

Could someone who can read schematics better and quicker than me maybe say if this will still sound like a regular Zendrive, or which values to use in which position for this PCB to make it into a correct one, I'd still like to use this PCB as it's very compact.

Thanks a lot!

Build Reports / Formula Muu
July 13, 2014, 10:19:19 AM
Haven't posted a report in a while, but this one deserves an honorable mention.
It's Jubal's version of the Catalinbread Formula 5
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=14779.msg138183#msg138183
and I incorporated the "More" switch from the tagboard version, making R4 switchable:
http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.de/2012/04/catalinbread-formula-no-5.html
I had an original one years ago, and I remember the gain range being fairly useless, it was actually just ON and OFF.
This one here is much better, more clarity, and both less and way more gain. Love it.

Open Discussion / The Holy Grail Guitar Show
July 10, 2014, 07:52:44 AM
Oh, I just found out what's coming to town in November, and I'll go:
http://holygrailguitarshow.com/
I think they want to have something like the Montreal Guitar Show over here, too. No factory guitars, just handmade stuff, with a focus on the small European builders.

Rocked my Zero Point Micro before boxing, everything was fine.
Boxed it.
Now there is a scratchy sound in the repeats, hard to describe. Took it out of the box again, the scratchy sound stays.
What can that be?

Thank you.

Tech Help - Projects Page / The Klon hates me
March 29, 2014, 04:25:10 PM
Arggghhhhh.
Going through the debugging pile today. I have a Kinglayer here, an Apis, and Aion's Refractor, and none of them work.
That is all.

Build Reports / Unfinished boxes
March 27, 2014, 08:24:44 PM
I've been busy (building and boxing) but also lazy (painting).
Not really happy with these raw boxes. I don't play much these days, that was the reason for leaving them that way. Building for the sake of building, fair enough.
And, really, as always, labelling will follow. But something is missing.
I have some childrens' stickers here, flags, animals, pearls. Hmm.
What say ye?

What they are:
1590a - Nucleon M Boost that Rutger gave me as a gift

Top row:
Nucleon Superfuzz, Rullywowr Pharaoh, F(x) Grease Gun, Black Horse Broken Arrow

Bottom Row:
Rullywowr Plexibone, Nucleon Atomic Red, Pickdropper Ross Comp w/ Schoon Toon Blend Knob, ZVex Super Duper.

All of these have been posted here on the forum by other people so you know what they sound like. Fantastic, of course.

Hello.
I have a used no-name set of bridge/middle/neck pickups here that I want to put in a guitar. Each pickup has three wires, red, white and black. Black is ground, white is probably hot, and red is a tap, I suppose.

What do I do with the red one if I don't need it? Just cut it short, put in in tape or heat shrink and forget about it?

Thank you!

Catalinbread now have their take on the Harmonic Percolator.
Four controls: Input, Output, Diodes, Density.
What? How? Interesting.

Build Reports / Croquet Hoop's two minis
November 30, 2013, 04:09:03 PM
Got an envelope from OSH Park yesterday, pleasant way to spend a saturday.
Circuit Salad's Optical Squeezer and a mini OCD:
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=6616.msg56465#msg56465
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=10840.msg109740#msg109740
What a great compressor this is. The enclosure fell down while the paint was drying, so don't look too close.
The OCD also does what it's supposed to do, sounds just like my older EgoDriver.
Thank you, Croquet Hoop, for these projects!!!

Hello.
I feel a little dumb asking this, but are there different kinds of rotary switches?
I ordered one for the Feta Complis, a regular 3p4T switch, and it seems to be incorrect. Mirrored, so to speak. The Feta, seen from the component side, is
   C
B   A
the switch is
   C
A   B

That switch would be right for the component side, but not the other side.
So I ordered a different brand. SAME. And then another one. SAME.
What the??
Could someone please point out the right switch from Banzai, Musikding or MEK - or tell where I'm thinking wrongly?!?
Thanks!

Finished populating my Cardinal board. All the parts seem to be oriented correctly, both trimmers are wired not as trimmers but using regular pots. All these work, although the wave pot is rather subtle.
I get lush tremolo.
However, the 3-way switch doesn't seem to be doing anything, to my ears all positions sound the same, regular normal tremolo as in my other tremolos, I don't hear any phasing/vibe artefacts. Can this be?
I'm using a waterclear LED for D2, I didn't see that a diffused one is recommended. Is that it?
Using a TL072CP for the IC, but a TL062 doesn't make a difference.

Voltages:
Q1
D 7.95
S 0.59
G 0.00

Q2
D 4.91
S 0.91
G 0.00

Q3
D 1.21
S 0.00
G 0.00

IC TL072CP
4.23   8.59
4.40   4.47
4.35   4.47
0.00   4.47

Any help appreciated. Thank you!

And another question:

today I finished building JMK's Engineer's thumb (http://www.jmkpcbs.com/Store_files/Engineer%27s%20Thumb.pdf) including Jon's Treble Mod (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=9109.msg79529#msg79529), everything worked fine before boxing up.
Built it into an enclosure using Jubal's Schoon Toon (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=8427.msg73062#msg73062) for the first time and boom, no signal.
I get bypass and the LED does light up when on. Can't see any wrong parts values and all the wires seem to be in the right places.
Hmm.
Question:
The Compressor PCB has its own CLR on it, and so does the Schoon Toon. So now I have two CLRs, hadn't thought about that before. Also: the ET PCB has a place for the LED + and the Schoon Toon does have a place for an LED, I used the Toon's and omitted the LED from the ET PCB. I only used the 9V+, in, out and the gound pad on the bottom left on the PCB.

OR might it just be some poor soldering or anything similarly dumb?

Thank you!
