Build Reports / darkside
June 29, 2011, 09:02:39 PM
here is my darkside build that I'd put together last year. I used carbon comps where available. and bc549 transistors. I really like the tone of this one. I might try building another without the bass reduction mods, and some tweaks to add more sweep to the tone control. I made a gothic style decal as a play on the circuits name.

Build Reports / poindexter
June 26, 2011, 06:23:16 AM
here's a poindexter, witch has become my favorite octafuzz of late. stuffed it all into a transparent gold powdercoated 1290a box from ppp, with some nifty gold jacks top mounted. put a couple different pairs of oddball ge diodes on a switch and thats all she wrote. sounds octave....licious? octave....tastic? sounds good...real good, and quiet too! I was expecting it to be rather noisy without shielded leads but they weren't necessary.

Build Reports / spackler
June 22, 2011, 09:41:36 PM
spackler build. in an etched enclosure with a few more of those vintage knobs. This one is great for beefing up single coils that sound a little thin. NOS carbon comp resistors and a burr brown op amp. Teflon jacketed silver  wire throughout. now that I look at the photos, I think I'll pull it apart and paint the inside of the enclosure. I really don't like the look of unfinished aluminum unless it's polished.

Build Reports / harmonic percolator
June 21, 2011, 05:53:58 PM
here's a percolator build. love this one at the lower gain ranges. love those diodes in other builds too, great in the sunking. I will probably put some grapics on it later. I bought a ton of those switch wiring boards a couple years ago so I used one here. they really don't make any thing easier, if anything they are more tedious to deal with. I've got some left If anybody want's 'em after my ringing endorsement, heh heh.

Build Reports / sunking
June 20, 2011, 01:13:55 PM
Here is a sunking on 1 of the last 2 boards I bought from Bean. I did the double diode switch mod, with bat41's, ma856's, 1n914's, and some nos metal can Tesla diodes. I might make some adjustments after playing for a while. I originally used ad712 opamps which I wouldn't recommend. They sounded boxy and harsh. I replaced one with a op2134 and it sounded better, and I have  some on order so I'll replace the second shortly. I haven't really liked the 712's in anything but the serendipity.

Build Reports / ptp rangemaster
June 19, 2011, 02:16:13 AM
here's a negative ground, point to point rangemaster with a npn transistor and input cap blend pot. I built the main part of the circuit on a terminal strip and just freehanded the rest. I really prefer the blend knob opposed to a switch. this thing sounds great into a fuzz face. knobs are vintage '70's hi-fi salvage.

Build Reports / snack shack
June 17, 2011, 09:54:36 PM
here is a snack shack build with 2n5088's in an enclosure that I polished and acid etched. this is one cool fuzz. I might add a volume control to the next one I build.

Build Reports / green russian
June 17, 2011, 01:31:38 PM
here's a mudbunny built to green russian specs. I used bc547's for transistors throughout. I have posted my values for the mids control mod in another post, they work well so I am sticking with them. this pedal proguces a HUGE range of tone. the mids control is a welcome addition. the diodes are socketed and stuffed with run of the mill 1n914's. I don't see any reason to change them. everything is sounding great so I'm leaving well enough alone. full face decal over green etching primer.

Build Reports / colorsound overdriver
June 15, 2011, 01:36:16 AM
here is a cherrybomb build in a pedal enclosure's "yy" case that I sanded and polished, decal'd, and clear coated. I used 2n3565 transistors in it but I'm onna try a few others out to see what I like best. It has a Jack Orman relay bypass installed.  sounds really good sparkling clean boost to sustaining fuzz tones with tons of output and a powerful eq.

General Questions / expression pedal bypass.
June 13, 2011, 05:39:47 PM
Have any of you guy's ever included an expression pedal input jack on any of your projects. I'm researching it at the moment and wonder if anybody has pulled it off. What I'm thinking of doing is using a stereo double switching jack to bypass a dual gang panel mounted pot with the same pot mounted in a wah shell. there are 3 connections to the pot. I'm thinking the switching jack will bypass the pot when the cable is inserted, and reconnect the pot when it's removed.

My questions are:
1. Is a double switching jack the right part or do I need something else?

2. is it necessary to have the control in the pedal disconnected when the pedal is connected, or can I simply "add another pot" into the circuit?

Any thoughts? I had been working on the project for a while before the Idea  came to me, and I have a general Idea of how to go about it. but this is a first for me and I'm sure that there is the possibility of a more elegant solution. I want to try to get the theory ironed out before I take too much of a detour. I'm still waiting on the enclosure and a few other parts so I'm doing my homework now.

If any body has done any expression installations. any Ideas help. schematics, drawings, or gutshots would be dandy. thanks guys.

Build Reports / hunny bunny build
June 13, 2011, 01:18:20 PM
Here is a build of soulsonic's hunny bunny project. This was designed as a challenge from bjorn of bjfe to build something that sounded like the honey bee just from listening to it. I etched the board from a layout I got from fsb. It has a metal can lm301 op amp, mil-spec resistors throughout, panasonic and tompay film caps, and nichicon audio gold electros. Wired with teflon jacketed silver stranded wire.

This has to be the most touch sensitive pedal I've ever heard. It sounds similar to the honey bee with more gain and output available and it has a very interesting tone control. It doesn't roll off the highs as much as it shapes the whole eq. When I tested it I played for 2 hours. This pedal is a lot of fun

The enclosure is etched (or...over etched in fact) and sprayed with of all things,an old can of vintage amber neck tint from guitar reranch, and clear lacquer.

Build Reports / uproar build
June 12, 2011, 03:15:12 AM
here's a recent uproar build. with everything but the facemelter mod. I really like this one. Nice thick crunch. haven't played with it a ton yet but it sounds awesome with my prs singlecut.  socketed quite a few of the caps so I could dial it into my rig. can't remember what I changed from stock at the moment, but I did make a few adjustments.being a high gain circuit, I used another clickless relay bypass and stuffed it all into a 125b.

Build Reports / mkIII tonebender
June 11, 2011, 04:02:21 PM
mkIII tonebender done on perf with oc75's and a roadrage board. finished with varigated 24k goldleaf and polyurethane witch I over cooked causing the dark amber color. I actually liked it better so I left it like that ;D

Build Reports / Germanium Zygote....of DOOM!!!
June 10, 2011, 07:13:55 PM
Here's a zygote build in a red vein powder coated yy enclosure from Pedal Enclosures. The box has what has to be the most lushious, thick, glossy, durable finish I've ever seen. Pictures (especially mine) don't do justice to it.

I've built up quite a stockpile of nos carbon comp resistors that I reserve for projects like this. I used an vishay orange drop and yellow film cap from mojotone for the bi-polar caps. the transistors are unmarked pnp germaiums slightly higher gain than a typical fuzz face spec. this one has all the mods done. The drain control is done with a 9mm pot so it can be easily adjusted without a screwdriver.

If I was to only be able to use 1 pedal for the rest of my life it would be a fuzz face. There is so much good stuff available right at your fingertips. this one is no exception. I generally use this one with the fuzz just a hair under full on. and I dial the volume on my guitar back a hair for a warm od tone. For more sustain I'll increase the volume. and with the volume at about 75% it gets perfectly clean. Nudging the volume up reveals sparkling grit. the tweak and strain really help taylor the fuzz to whatever amp you are using. I like running it into a warm slightly overdriven brit style amp, preferably with singlecoils or split humbuckers.

Build Reports / serendipty
June 09, 2011, 02:53:02 PM
serendipity build with clickless relay bypass. used bs170's and an ad712 opamp. sounds nice. this is the 3rd zen clone I've built and while they have the same flavor they all seem to have slightly less gain available. this doesn't bother me as I never run this pedal full on. this is one of my favorite od's.

Build Reports / sft
June 08, 2011, 12:46:28 AM
here's a sft in a pedal enclosures...ermm...enclosure. I built for my freind in a touring punk band. he wanted something to give his bass tone a little more girth. he said this was just what the doctor ordered. this circuit sounds great with guitar too.

Build Reports / tube screamer
June 07, 2011, 06:28:46 AM
I've been playing guitar since I was 15 and I don't think I've ever had a ts 808. so I etched up the os board and put it in a old beat up pro co. rat enclosure. wired up with a clickless relay bypass.

here's a custom build I finished last month. it's a sunking with a daughter board with 8 different clipping options selectable with an 8 position dip switch done on perfboard. I've got a few oddball ge diodes. in60's,bat 41's, some nos turquoise leds. a pair of mosfets with a 1n34a in series. etc. all the options sound surprisingly different. the only option I don't like is no clippers.

It's housed in a 125bb. finished with interference paint that shifts color from green to purple. The pinup on the decal is a painting by Gil Elvegren. He's my favorite pinup artist. the girl resembles the owners wife who is of German decent like the girl in the painting. he had the pedal named after her. it is finished with several coats of clear lacquer, wet sanded to 2000 grit and buffed to a mirror shine.

Build Reports / lil lius
June 07, 2011, 05:36:00 AM
here's a lavache from a board I etched in a 1590a enclosure. painted with pastel green enamel. I didn't pay close enough attention when wiring it up and connected the 9v to the output. the volume pot caught on fire when I tested it...DOH... I replaced the pot and it all worked out in the end
