Tech Help - Projects Page / Kingslayer cap sub.

Hello all.
I have everything but a 3.9n cap for c15 on my Kingslayer build.
Looks like it goes to the middle leg on the tone pot.
I have a 2.2 or a 4.7.
Any idea what the tonal differences will be from the 3.9?

Ibanez and a Radio Shack dc power. The Ibanez has a super loud low hz hum the Shack one is the high pitch. I 100uf capped the dc jack (about halved the High pitch but not the low). Then tried a 100 ohm resistor to the + lead. This took away the high pitch and helped a tad on the low pitch. So basically the cap and resistor worked on for the radio shack adapter....although I feel it has some background hiss now.
  Strange because my Ibanez unit has been with me since the early 90s and I have never had a problem with it. Again...pedal sounds great and everything seems to work well. Does anyone know if there is a vero build for building a "filter" with extra ports for dc power? I cant see spending that much for a pedal power (ie.Voodoo or t-rex) when I could probably build something.
  I do have a question on tweaking the tone knob (does not do much on my build) but I will start a different thread for that.

High pitched noise. All the time with no changes when turning tone, gain, or volume. Steady pitch.

Just got done my build. It sounds great but I get noise with a dc adapter.
I have tried another brand adapter but still getting noise.
9v battery power is clean.
Wanted to note I don't get any noise in my other pedals with either of my adapters.
I have tried moving the dc input plug/shielding the wires/a different wall outlet.
*I built it stock but did the "Put the 4n7 in C3, omit C4 and jumper R4" to get a bit more bottom end.
ic is a Texas lt1054cp

What can I look for to tweak?

Hello.. Just got done my KSII and it sounds great.
One issue I have is I cant tell any difference between the fat switch settings.
I only had a center off switches...and I can hear when the caps are "off" (sounds a bit dead) but I cant hear any noticeable difference between standard and fat.
Continuity checks  out (caps are getting hit via up and down on switch) and cap values are good.
Anything else I can check?
Could it be a bad chip?


Yes gain is at least 3/4 up.

5457 in q3 and q5.
It was the only way I could get her to tame down.
With all j201's it was like a 5150 with a sho boost in front of it....but it was too noisy (lot's of idle crack and hiss).
With a TIGHT gate it would make a cool death metal pedal that way...but was unstable
for my needs.

Still lots of gain on tap though. :)

I plan on building a full 5457 version with needed bass mods to bring back the low end when using all 5457's. I tried it and think it would make an excellent "rock" pedal with those "tubes  ;)" in it.

It's c15 on a dpdt with a .0082uf (bright) on one end....and
a .047 uf on the other.
For whatever reason...my pedal was very tinny with the stock 6.8n on c15.
This mod totally opened it up .
Going to work on the bass next (it's pretty much maxed out all the time).

Read the fetzer valve article on runoffgroove, you'll realise the standard 1/2 supply voltage biasing is not ideal, and different jfets have different requirements.  Make a jfet matcher, it will help get the bias accurate for each jfet, they are incredibly variable.

Went through about 20 j201's lastnight. Was still pretty noisy.
Put some shielded on the output from the board and input to the jack and it helped a bit but
its' still cracking some. Went through the vr's and cant find any bad ones.
Looks like without building a probe..I will just need to deal with it for a bit.

One thing I tried was loading up some 2n5457's. DEAD quiet...but gain is about halved and you
loose all the bottom thump (thud or chug?). So...I was thinking I might build a 2n5457 Chunk and
mess around with the caps to try and bring back the low end. I think it can make a great
"rock" pedal if I can get this figured out.

Question...What cap/resistor do I mess with to fatten the bottom end (c16?).

I have a bag of 201's I can toss at it. 8)

Should I check q5?
It does not need bias set...so my meter has yet to touch it.
Should there be a range that it needs to be at for proper operation?

Lack of gain...I would start there. 5v bias is a bit off spec. but the fets should still run good at that voltage.
I have a CRAZY  :o amount of gain with 201's at 4.25v.

Two things I would check.
Apperently...there is a batch of counterfeit j201's out there that are waaay off spec. Swap them out with a known good set if you can (found a thread just this weekend on the diy forum about this).

Also check that the pots are actually working ok. I had bought some cheap ones off the bay that did not react well when I got them a bit too hot with the iron. ;). I had a muff I was working on for two weeks that came down to-two faulty pot's.

Honestly sounds like a missed value or a cold joint to me.
