VFE Projects / Re: Merman Fizz—Update
September 05, 2017, 09:52:10 AM
I'm definitely going to swap out a few ceramic caps for film, and try the low esr 22u caps as well. The values are good so I'm thinking to make the build closer to the exact specs called for.

Swapped out the Tant 4u7 and got rid of the verging on farty breakup from the Bottom pot. Still have fizz though. Will check values again and keep digging. Getting closer!

Yes. I was using D9Es and tried removing them altogether, same issue. Random thought: used a tant for 4u7. Any noise issues in that spot with a tant?

VFE Projects / Merman Fizz—Solved!
September 03, 2017, 12:31:55 PM
Fired up the Merman and it works, but am getting unwanted, verging on farty, breakup from the Bottom control and fizz from the Warm control (which I can almost dial out by backing off Warm and treble). I checked components and reflowed and my voltages are close (maybe pin 6 of the 7662 is low?)

2 4.3
3 3.05

Any thoughts on what might be the issue?

The board is fairly tight, but not a problem for experienced builders. There are a lot of cool sounds, just barely scratched the surface so far.

Build Reports / Choral Reef
September 03, 2017, 07:14:27 AM
Just finished the Choral Reef with bottom mounted jacks in a 1590 BS. Purpose built for the upper row of my board to allow shorter cables connecting to the looper. I stole the idea from a Clarinot build (I think, can't find) on here a short while back and it was a lightbulb solution to my problem!

Realized I used a resistor with value printed on the board rather than the correct value listed in the build doc. Was a bit of a pain to replace in a tight spot but all's well. Lots of sounds in this one!  Great project!

Have you checked out the BYOC Crown Jewel? Very versatile with a parametric midrange, clipping options and selectable boost modules. I built one on vero w/out boost and it's fantastic.

No affiliation on my part with BYOC, btw, IYKWIM.

Totally weird and uncool!

I missed this originally so was glad to see it. Awesome build, and the jack placement is something I'm going to steal for the top row of my board.

I finally signed up for the $10 level. Looking at a Pinball eventually. Cool project!

How important is the 14k3 resistor values to be exact? If I don't have to order such an odd value it would be really swell. Would 15k work?

Eclipse is a possibility.  You haven't changed religions recently have you?  :P
No, but my refrigerator has been telling me about getting into yoga.   :D

I was an electrician and used to do this, so I know... If you live in an apartment, the chances of electrical interference go up greatly. In my apartment days, I've had speakers hum from neighbors appliances, TV reception messed by the microwave above me, and other oddities. Apartment buildings are built and wired quickly and cheaply. Electric wiring is insulated against injury, but not static and RF interference. The wiring is all bundled together across the building to the meters and the breakers are usually of so-so quality at best, so interference easily jumps to other circuits. I'd put money on it being electrical. Any combination of ways the power is being used across your building at the moment can change its effect on your gear.

This makes sense given the pervasive nature of the problem. Thanks!
