Open Discussion / Man, I miss you guys....
December 19, 2013, 02:46:15 PM
Been going through some major changes since getting laid off a second time this year, so pedals have taken a seat way in the back. I've had to keep myself from even lurking, because my love of circuit building tends to make me spend money and time that I don't have right now. And all the banter here really, really makes me want to build.

But I sure do miss the good people here.

I hope someday to be able to actively participate in the forums again, both as a mindless commentator (my specialty), and as a builder.

Build Reports / V3 (Ego Driver)
October 27, 2013, 07:56:46 PM
And a self etched ego driver pcb. I didn't do the pot substitutes for gain/Volume reduction, and subsequently noticed that the clipping switch and hp/lp switch are much more subtle with higher settings. But it pretty much rocks as a thick, meaty overdrive when cranked, especially since it pushes the front end of a tube amp. I like it. 9th chords retain great note definition with it.

Build Reports / Klone (aion's Refractor)
October 27, 2013, 07:47:28 PM
Rocked and boxed, but not really played thru yet. First time with a Centuar circuit, so I'm not really sure what to expect due to the hype.

Used Bat 41 diodes since my whole stash of germanium diodes all showed fv below 25mv.

I do hope I like it.

I like the polished aluminum look enclosure from mammoth, but every little nick and scuff shows up.

General Questions / Clipping LED question
October 14, 2013, 05:44:38 PM
So, i've not fiddled with any LED clipping schemes before. Is there a preferred color for clipping LEDs? I've seen diffused green, and heard some mention water-clears,  but does it matter much?

I know that what matters is forward voltage.

Build Reports / Stoner Fuzz (aion halo bmp pcb)
October 10, 2013, 07:35:00 PM
So....my first ever venture into a fabbed, modded muff pcb. I previously etched a board that was designed solely for the pharoah, and enjoyed the huge-ness of the sound. So did my son. But financial problems arose and I had to sell it.

I told him I'd build him another, this time a creamy dreamer....until I heard the skreddy ?Lady and the ultra stoner.

So I grabbed juansolo's component comparison chart, bought a bmp (halo) pcb from aion, and built this for my son. Promised I wouldn't sell it....

I really like the sound of this....I think it covers creamy dreamer, and pharoah territory as well as standard muff. I will probably build one for myself.....

Guts....I don't think I'll ever master the art of symmetrical wire runs.....

Tech Help - Projects Page / Led causing popping?
October 06, 2013, 04:39:35 PM
Hey all. I've got a phaser that pops when I switch it on. I've wired it so input is grounded, and even went beyond that and threw a 1 meg pulldown from board input to ground. But the popping persists. Before I try soothe pdr on the output, is there another way to stop the popping if it's due to the led?

Thanks fellas

Open Discussion / LSK170 = BS170?
October 06, 2013, 03:50:48 PM
I haven't checked the datasheets yet, but at diyaudio, they have some limited stock of LSK170 for sale in batches of 8. pricey, but maybe some of us here are interested.

here is a link.

Build Reports / Another Galacticon phaser
September 30, 2013, 07:03:25 PM

I had my go with a different etch acid....and not so good results.

Unless, of course, I say "I meant to do that", and call it "relic'd" ;D

Another phase 45 with blend knob.
Added the Univibe caps mod permanently, since that's the only phaser sound I dig.

PCB by  "stomptown" , and just a joy to populate, really.

Open Discussion / forum not tapatalk friendly anymore?

Huh...can't access my favorite forum now using tapatalk. That sucks! Anyone know why this is?

Edit: just saw jimilee's post.

...she excitedly shows you "circuit board ties".

Yes, green dress ties, with circuit traces and pads on them.

And she thinks I would wear them.

Omg. What have I become to her. ;)

I've got a couple Valvo OC74 transistors, both not to bad on leakage.... No a lot of info I've found for them, tho. A couple of old posts on diysb
concerning using them in a rangemaster.
I wanna throw one in a tonebender for q3. Usually I've only noticed folks staying with the tried and true combos for TB circuits.
Since I only have a bunch of Russian GT403'S and some crazy oddball germanium's from antique radios handy, I figured I'll be the guinea pig.
Thoughts about the valvo, anyone?

Tech Help - Projects Page / Zygote PNP Q1 question
August 07, 2013, 07:49:27 PM
I've got my zygote all wired up, a couple of ac128's in it, q2 biased nice and neat at  -4.5 v.... but I just ain't getting fuzzy enough. Q1 is HFE 83, q2 at 125.
When I check the voltages on q1, I get nothing over a volt.

Q1 emitter is 0 (emitter to ground)
Collector is 130mv
Base is around 60mv

Q2
Base 150mv
Emitter is around 110mv
And collector is at 4.50

I'm not getting it..... My q1 seems a bit screwy?

I mean, it sounds OK.... But not nearly as fuzzy as I would think it should. My son's JH fuzz face is more fuzzy.

Am I expecting too much from a germanium fuzz?

Build Reports / Vibra-Phase (stomptown's Galacticon)
August 01, 2013, 10:39:32 PM
Forgot I was working with a 4site enclosure, and used my standard Hammond drill template, so I didn't have enough room for a battery when I'd finished wiring it up. Photo is from before being rewired.
Also managed to scratch part of the decal while wiring it. After three coats of acrylic. Argh. Is the something better than krylon crystal clear, that isn't envirotex? And won't turn decals yellowish?
Other than that, the PCB was a joy to work with. Easily a one-nighter build.

Video demo posted in video/audio demo section.

Here's a demo of stomptown's Galacticon PCB, with vibe mod caps wired in permanently. As usual, my playing suffers from 13 hour work days, but.... Whatever.
Great PCB layout, and sounds great.
Of course, I somehow messed up the decal while wiring it up..... Damnit.

catching up on boxing a few that I've had done for awhile....love this circuit. I find it's got a bit less high end than the Slambox. I haven't really compared the two schematics, but to my ears....

Everyone should have one of these on their board. It's the only other circuit besides a wah that is a mainstay for me.

Audio/Video Demos / Phatmuff (Pharaoh clone) demo.

Here's a short and embarrassing demo. I haven't played much more than a couple hours total this last month, due to the new job. I hate it.

Sorry,I thought I could embed it from my phone. I'll fix it later....

I've got quite a few stripped out threads on Davies knobs that a want to fill and re-thread. Does anyone know the thread size of the set screws?

Build Reports / Copperhead Overdrive (Neutrino)
July 21, 2013, 09:23:20 PM
Getting caught up on builds this weekend.
Heard so much good stuff about the Eternity Burst, had to build one. Having never played out of a Tube Screamer (gasp!), I didn't know what to expect from the circuit. Nice medium gain, but for me, too much added color on my sound.
Still, better than most. I'm just extremely picky about dirt pedals..... very few stay on my pedal board (which usually consists of a wah and a boost. And I don't kick on the boost all that much. Love my amp.)

Build Reports / Zoso (Fatpants)
July 21, 2013, 09:13:05 PM
Getting the hang of solid core wires, and slowly getting rid of the ribbon cable. I had another try at etching, with the usual results. But since zeppelin IV is also known as "the rustic album", it kind of worked out.
