How do you guys cut this evil crap? I've destroyed one sheet trying to figure it out.... Need help!

Well, I ordered my first super pedal - A Source Audio Nemesis delay. Way cheaper than a Timeline, and seems easy enough to use.

I will update this thread when I get it in.

Requests / Deadringer 2 drive only
February 11, 2016, 05:29:20 AM
I really liked the drive side of the deadringer2. I think it would be a great etcher paradise project with board mounted pots. Maybe a simple bass control like the Timmy instead of the rotary?

Open Discussion / SIP Socket Garbage
February 08, 2016, 10:54:03 AM
Hello guys:

I put together one of Jon's projects - the most recent fuzz - and I am having problems with it. I think, though, that my problems come from the garbage SIP sockets I got in my most recent Tayda order.

Has anyone else had problems with these sockets? I've used SIP sockets in the past for transistors and other components I wanted to swap in and out, but these ones don't seem very sturdy.

Stock as stock gets. Love the ratty nastiness.

Not as tidy....

Boxed four this week, so I am feeling cheerful.

Build Reports / The beast - black horse effects
May 09, 2015, 09:09:37 AM
I just finished boxing this one up. Od820 on the right, Klone to silver pony specs on the left. Knobs from when blms blew em out last year. D9e diodes. It is a tight squeeze with the top mount jacks. Both sides sound great!

What would you have on your board?

I'd probably have stuff from Caroline GCO, Diamond, VFE, Strymon and Neunaber. At least those are the companies that come to mind when I think of high quality and original(ish) designs. I'm starting to think about this more, because I am running out of time to build much.

So what would yours be?

Build Reports / The Dirt Controller

This is a pedal of firsts: first multi, first with smd jfets, first with optical switching, first collaboration.

It is an 8 ball into a supreaux deux. This is headed back to Dave on Monday. I don't know if I am going to put the supreaux deux into mine, I might put a color sound overdriver or something in instead.

5 offboard pots, 4 offboard led's, and a whole lotta Teflon wire.

Hello Everybody:

I have populated a Th Customs Supreaux Deux and I'm getting 18v on tp2 (which is, I believe, connected to the j201 transistor.) That voltage reading didn't change at all based on where the trimmer was set. Also, the circuit has very little gain/volume and no clipping right now. Things just aren't right.

Does this mean that my j201 is bad or fried, or could it mean that the trimmer isn't good? I am going to replace the trimmer as the first step, but I'm not sure how to diagnose it if the trimmer isn't the problem.

I was able to bias the other transisters (which are smd on the SOT adaptor boards) just fine, and I have smd j201's available, but have a thru-hole part in there right now.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Paralell LED

I need to run two LED's off of Ben's detour optical bypass scheme for a multi pedal. I know that I will need to use a smaller resistor than 4.7k, but I can't figure out this calculator:

http://www.hebeiltd.com.cn/?p=zz.led.resistor.calculator

Is this what I should be looking at or am I not in the right ballpark.

I swear, the discussions on TGP about drives (actually, the discussions there in general) are almost too stupid to be believed. And there is never consensus. Like this thread on the Morning Glory and the Timmy: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=1551475

No description about what each does, or how it works. One of the reasons I started building pedals was my inability to wade through the BS when it comes to effects, drives in particular.

Mods / Self Oscillation Footswitch
February 12, 2015, 07:06:27 AM
Hello

I was inspired by watching the Pete Thorn demo of the Wave Cannon MKII from Caroline Guitar Company, and I have spent some time hunting around for a mod to add positive feedback to the input for a self-oscillation effect. I think I will either hardwire the octaves or squish a submini spdt in there somewhere, instead of having those on a stomp.

I looked on DIY stompboxes, and saw this thread (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=10408.0) on the DBA "total sonic annihilation" but haven't been able to find anything more.

I don't really know anything about the differences between positive and negative feedback, except that one reduces gain and the other pumps it up.

Anybody got any ideas on this?

Hello All:

A quick tech help question - I recently completed my Black horse Effects "The Beast" a dual OD pcb with a Maxon od-820 going into a Klon. The Maxon side works perfectly, no problems whatsoever. The klon side works perfectly as well, aside from one minor issue: When I turn the gain all the way off, there is static/hiss that isn't present any other time.

I have no idea what is causing this issue - I am pretty sure that all of my values are correct. As soon as there are diodes in the circuit, the hiss goes completely away. The solder joints look fine, but I will try to reflow later.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hello all:

I just finished my deadringer 2 and threw it on my test rig for a minute. The OD side is lovely, the clipping options are both fantastic, and I like it a bunch.

I am having some problems with the boost side, and am getting a bunch of distortion no matter where the bias is set. It also seems very very dark, and the "cut" knob doesn't seem to have much effect.

Are there any voltages I should try to bias my JFET's to? Are these bad JFET symptoms?

I will try to get some pictures up tonight, but those were my lunctime impressions.

General Questions / Drill Press
January 29, 2015, 07:48:22 AM
Hello folks. I have been thinking about buying a small drill press, and wondered if anyone here had used any of the small cheap "benchtop" presses. I don't have much room, so I'm looking for the smallest practical press for drilling enclosures and pcb's

Tech Help - Projects Page / Ss2 op amp
December 28, 2014, 09:47:50 AM
I just got some time with the awesome duplex drive.... I was not a fan of the lm1458 I put in it... It was really buzzy unpleasant distortion. Nothing like the demos I have heard.

Put in a 5532 and it was a little better, and a 4558 which was the best of the three. Anybody else have a op amp recommendation for me?

Open Discussion / Counterfeit LM308 and h1f11?
December 17, 2014, 09:48:45 AM
Hey - has anybody had problems with counterfeit IC's? Specifically the lm308 and h1f11?

I have just enough lm308's for my planned projects, but I wanted to check to see if the ebay lots of either of these are OK.
