Alright, I have a cherry bomb that I was taking apart to replace the gain pot and seem to have broken both jacks.
They are Neutrik ones that I got from Mouser. Haven't had any trouble with the other ones. When I hold the tip (the contact arm thing) with some pliers and try to loosen the nut, the nut and inside just turn like they are broken away from the plastic.

Help! Anyone else had this problem? I have had it once before and spent an hour muscling it out/breaking it out with pliers and wrenches.

Build Reports / Pretty Purple Fuzz, Mangler!
April 05, 2012, 01:18:52 PM
Here is another funky enclosure I got from mouser. I used Mangler and Road Rage boards from the MadBean himself. I also included the pre Gain control.

Tranny's are a GT402E and GT402B. Sounds thick ;D

Build Reports / Zygote build, Black Fuzz
April 03, 2012, 12:18:08 PM
Here is my latest FUZZ project. I used a road rage and a wicked board from Haberdasher. A pair of Russian GT402's that sound pretty good right now. Socketed a bunch of parts to experiment.

The enclosure is from Mouser. I got a couple funky ones from them to try out. I am sure they will be posted soon.

Open Discussion / Anybody dealt with Griffin effects
March 28, 2012, 09:35:45 AM
Hey folks. I had a friend of a friend of a friend ask me to mod his NF1 Boss noise gate to a slow gear with a mod kit from Griffin Effects. Has anybody dealt with these folks:
http://griffineffects.goshopper.net/

Honestly, if the kit is $45 plus shipping and I charge him $15 for my time I don't really want to do it. It involves cutting traces and says it is an "advanced" mod. I really just want to tell him to get a BYOC slow gear clone for $75.

Opinions?

Tech Help - Projects Page / snarkdoodle 330uf cap
February 22, 2012, 10:43:01 AM
Okay, I am not quite sure what the 330uf cap is doing in the snarkdoodle but I dont have one at this value.

Can I sub in a different value? two 100uf in parallel?

Thanks team!

Open Discussion / how to build a transistor tester
February 13, 2012, 12:01:47 PM
Okay, so I ordered a batch of 100 Russian transistors (GT108V)  and 20 GT402E and I want to build a rig on perf board to test them. I am following RG's article seen here:
http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/fuzzface/fffram.htm

An excellent article!!!

What I would like to do, is use my 1spot adapter which puts out about 9.4 volts but it is constant.
Do I have to adjust the resistors to make my DMM read the "correct" values at the end of the procedure?

Any advice or help with this project is much appreciated.

General Questions / voltage inverter layout
January 28, 2012, 02:00:53 PM
I love Bean's Road Rage board but I want to build a few Fuzz Face circuits and don't want to use up all of my RR boards. I want to save them for a couple DMM builds and other regulated builds.

Does anyone know a good per/vero layout for a voltage inverter? 9v in -9 out

thanks folks

Open Discussion / New Transistors to try from Tayda
January 24, 2012, 10:29:34 PM
Hey folks,

I am placing a larger (quantity, its cheap!) order with Tayda and am wondering what transistors I can try for some silicon fuzzes and experimenting and such.

Recommendations Please :)

Build Reports / Pasty Face Tonebender "Bend'r"
January 22, 2012, 08:51:56 PM
Pasty Face with Germanium tranny's from Small Bear. Sounds FUZZY. I enjoy the lower gain settings. It is, quite literally, jammed in there with the Sprague orange drops. I got them from SB as well so they are the high voltage, larger ones.

I super glued and hot glue gunned the clear shaft pot into the enclosure but I sure am not happy with the plastic pots. They look badass!!! but I think they will cause issues and break when tossed in a gig bag.

Build Reports / Paisley Aquaboy! v3205 version
January 22, 2012, 08:47:04 PM
Finally got this finished up. Still have another populated board to debug from a few months ago and am glad this one worked. It will definetly help with the other.

VERY dark compared to the Sea Urchin and other PT2399 obviously but it is even dark compared to my Boss DM-2. I spent an hour trying to bias it (I don't have a scope) and its still a bit distorted or gritty. I definetly like the sound though, don't get me wrong. It is much warmer and more organic sounding to me than the PT2399's and I quite enjoy it.

Alrighty, so a buddy gave me his Green Russian BMP to replace the broken battery snap. No problem I say. I want to put in a dc jack on the back for our usual wall wart setup.

I know there are a ton of versions and I came across a thread stating some of them were Positive Ground. I am frustrated going through a million threads so hopefully I can get some help from my Comrades here.

Is this a positive ground effect? It is made in Russia and has the massive green enclosure. I measured the positive and negative on the board and it reads normal to me. I put red probe on red battery snap wire and black on black. Even the PCB has + where the red wire is and - where the black is.

I just don't want to mess it up. It is a good buddy's.

So when looking for substitutions and wanting to experiment I come across the datasheets for transistors and have no idea how to read them.
What are the important figures to look for and how should I interpret these?

Thanks team!

Tech Help - Projects Page / capacitor tester trouble
January 03, 2012, 12:01:37 PM
Hey folks, I purchased the capacitor testor kit from spark fun seen here:
http://www.sparkfun.com/products/9485

The build went fine but is not working. No screen no nothing. I am supposed to check  pin 7 and 20 on the chip to get 5v but I am getting 9.5v!
I checked all joints and components, and checking the voltage makes me believe I have a bad regulator (78L05).

Does this sound correct?

Josh (gtr2) has this same one so hopefully he can chime in.

Build Reports / Cosmopolitan Build
December 30, 2011, 09:44:58 AM
Highly recommended. This is a cool sounding pedal and I am digging it. I have a BC109 from small bear in Q3 right now with about 680 hfe (taken on my multimeter). Other than that it is stock right now. Great sound.

I run my yellow shark with the volume wide open and the gain pretty much off. I get a really nice tiny amount of grit for playing modern country stuff. Lately with my humbucker guitars the volume is slightly under unity, making me turn up the gain a bit to match bypass volume. Then it gets too gritty haha.

I would like to increase the volume. Is it as simple as putting in a larger value pot? Just wanted to double check and maybe get some other input.

Open Discussion / Possible Tap-tempo for Sea Urchin
December 24, 2011, 12:36:12 AM
Hello greater powers that be,

Just checking out this tap tempo board from barry at guitarpcb:

http://www.guitarpcb.com/apps/webstore/products/show/2851536

Would this work with the sea urchin??

I'm not great with delays and this is foreign territory for me. Any thoughts?

Open Discussion / Where to find Germanium Transistors
November 10, 2011, 10:10:52 PM
I posted this over at DIYstomp as well but just in case anyone misses it:

Okay, so I have been getting transistors for fuzz face and rangemaster type circuits mostly from smallbear and want to expand. I want to try and find some locally and experiment with different types/kinds.

I am still learning and don't know where to look. So please, send your hints about what to watch out for. Old organs? old radios?

I have looked a tiny bit on ebay at those larger lots that mostly come out of Europe and don't know how trustworthy they are.

With everyone on here, we should be able get some ideas about things to watch for in classifieds, garage sales, and online.

Also, I tried searching for this topic and could not find it. This has probably been discussed so if you know where to look please post the link.

Thanks team!

Build Reports / Neutron build (Mutron III filter)
October 08, 2011, 06:13:30 PM
I have been working on this for wayyyyyyy too long. Finally got it finished. Was for a buddy who is a HUGE deadhead and wanted this built custom because Jerry Garcia had one. It sounds alright but I prefer the autowah.

This is based on the R.G. project with the board from General Guitar Gadgets.
