Open Discussion / Re: Silicon Fuzz Face Hfes

Quote from: midwayfair on December 11, 2013, 08:43:05 PMLow hfe transistors are really going the way of the dodo ... 2222s are above 100hfe now, BC10_"A" are getting tough to find, and all the really low-gain stuff like smallbear carries are either dead or significantly higher gain in their modern form. (I like these in particular, but then I have an irrational fondness of low-gain transistors.)

I have not auditioned them yet, but I have a bunch of 2N2369A's around 60 hfe. I just checked and mouser has ~17000 of them, so I guess they'll still be available for a while.

When in doubt, cross-reference with the values one Madbean's Mudbunny (the nomenclature is the same): http://www.madbeanpedals.com/projects/Mudbunny/docs/Mudbunny.pdf

C15 is 100n, but you can just omit it, as the note (14) indicates.

R23 is not optional (it goes from Q4 to ground), but R24 is (you have to jumper it, not omit it).

General Questions / Re: pot sub question....

A trimpot is nothing more than a smaller, pcb-mounted pot. So yes, you can use a regular pot (linear).

Quote from: ncdb07 on December 10, 2013, 02:39:12 AMLook at Madbean's Egghead circuit the whole thing can be built for $25 bucks but the manufacturer is charging $500.

$500 for a pedal is slightly steep, but the fact that you can get the materials for $25 does not means the DIY variant is worth $25, if you build to sell, unless you consider your building skills and time are not worth a dime (but if you build for yourself, as a hobby, then it does not matter).

Very nice. Are these 1590B or 125B boxes?

It looks great! I love how everything fits inside, there is not much room for error, but it shows that everything was well planned. Good job.

General Questions / Re: 1/8" Patch Cables.. Blasphemy?

We need small magsafe connectors (with $30 adapters to 1/4" for compatibility).

You may have more space inside, but you'll have to deal with adapters (which will make you lose space outside) if you ever want to add a "normal" pedal to your setup.

I have thought about it too, but despite finding the size of most 1/4" jacks and plugs absurdly bulky, I thought that it was safer to use small 1/4" jacks in the pedal, and use/make cables with small connectors (Lava CX, George L, or any ready-made cheap patch cables with reasonably sized connectors, see Pickdropper's thread about his pedaltrain nano for instance).

Sure. For instance: http://fr.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Kobiconn/161-R301B07-E/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMv1TUPJeFpwbhNb2LLV2zw6wEih7O7UrUE%3d

(just check the datashet to be sure, but it should be okay)

IEC connector?

There are many variants (pin layout), so be careful when you choose the replacement.

edit: looks like what you need is the C14 variant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_connector#Appliance_Coupler_standard_sheets

Thanks for the input guys. I've managed to understand which part of the reference indicates what, so I think I have a grip on the shaft length/multi gang variations. I'll probably throw a bunch of them in my next order.

One thing that annoys me a bit is that it seems to take ages for them to restock some knobs (especially black ones). It almost makes me want to order them from Smallbear (I guess the shipping cost would be balanced by the lower prices).

The grain pattern of that ash body is awesome. Great colors too, that's a nice JB!

Now you need to put a 9V battery in the control cavity and orange LEDs under those transparent chickenhead knobs!

Sure, I'll share the results as soon as it proves effective and reliable :) Hopefully I'll be able to post a build reports featuring that kind of switch around next week.
