How do I make an fx loop that bypasses when nothing is plugged in?

I want to make an FX loop for my volume pedal after my Gains because there's no more room on my board for the volume pedal. So basically, I want to route the signal to the right edge of my PT Nano and have two jacks to insert the volume pedal.

Can someone show me a diagram of how to wire one up so that when I don't have the volume pedal plugged in, my signal will still run through past the fx loop?

You do this using switching jacks. Connect the switches on the two jacks, and you're set. I realize this isn't a drawing, but hopefully you'll understand the idea with the description.

that's it, roughly. you'll need a switched jack like the neutrik NYS2122. once you've actually seen one of these things, it's actually pretty obvious how they work. basically, once you insert a jack, it disconnects one of the contacts.

These are the jacks Jacob and Misha are talking about:

Mono mono 1/4 inch jack

And a stereo version 1/4 inch jack

Notice the shorting pins on both jacks.

Hope this helps.
