I agree and also feel that a slight boost can do wonders for your signal. A comp usually adds just the right amount of boost as well.

Pedal building is like the opposite of sex.  All the fun stuff happens before you get in the box.

Been running a 4:1 compressor and a bloviator on my bass. It's a great one two punch. Thinking of adding a blend/fx loop pedal to put some other pedals into while retaining a good fundamental bass tone underneath. At least that's the plan after I finish up everything else I'm working on.
