Pepper Spray Transistor Question

The parts list for the Pepper Spray lists Q2 as 2n3965       I used the links in the build doc to smallbear electronics to order parts that I needed, and I just realized the link was to a 2n3565 transistor (which I ordered, and have ready for the build).     I don't see the 2n3565 listed as an equivalent for the 2n3965, but is this a recommended sub for Q2?    I wanted to check since I do find an equivalent listing for the 2n3965 to be a 2n3906, which I have in my inventory.

I think 2n3965 must be a mistake (both in BOM and schematic ...).  Effects Layouts lists it as a 2n3565 (http://effectslayouts.blogspot.com/2016/07/harmonic-percolator.html) ... do a few other places.

I think it probably is an error too.  I am socketing the transistors so I might give it a try anyway to see if it smokes (literally or figuratively ...).  Then I can sub in the 2n3906.

It's definitely supposed to be a 2n3565 since that was confirmed by the reverse engineered units out there. That said, any medium-gain NPN silicon will work well for Q2 in the circuit.

I've made a perc with the 2n3565 (per the schematic online) and it turned out great. I think the BOM just has a typo.

thanks!  checked some other schematics on the web and fuond multiple references to using the 2n3565, along with a couple of other NPN choices.

Mouser has a 2N3565 but they are $5 a pop...

So I looked up similar specs for what Mousers stocks and the PN3565 comes up and it is much cheaper. Has anyone tried it or know if it will work well?

A mistype - should be 3565. I'll correct it later today.

Btw, I think there is another mistake in the PS BOM list where it specifies a BAT41 as a sub for the 3965. Shouldn't it be for the 1n695?

Those PN3565 are a modern, higher-gain type compared to the original 2N3565. If you're looking for a modern substitute, you're better off with a 2n3904.

Small Bear still has 2n3565 for $1.75. Not the cheapest, but not too bad either considering you just need one.  ;)

No worries, Brian...I always want to type 3656 on this too!
